We've been using a diaper service since birth. At first they suggested a newborn size prefold, which was fine the first week (though he needed the smallest covers I could find). Then we took 2 weeks off after the circ, and he was suddenly soaking through the newborn prefolds quickly. I called and they said that they only recommend the newborn inserts for the first week (but didn't let me know!) Anyway, love the convenience of the service, but don't bother with newborn inserts. Worst case scenario is baby has an extra big butt in the beginning!

@bluestriped bee: Let me know if you have any questions about the service, since there is only once in our area, it must be the same one you're thinking of using :)

@Lindsayinny I don't know if you are in NYC but, I plan on using diaper kind when my LO comes in Feb. I hear great things about them from friends.

My Mon cloth diapered and it's what I know best. I am looking forward to it. But maybe not the extra trips to the laundromat with covers....

@bluestriped bee: I'm looking into a service like your coworker. They deliver 80 diapers for a week (for newborns/infants). That sounds like a TON to store though!

@avivoca: I think I could handle that. I do laundry every week or two now (for things that can't be dried so we don't have it done). And, from what I've read, buying covers can be quite the addiction ;)

@LindsayInNY: Covers aren't a huge deal when it comes to laundry. You can reuse them if the diaper was just a pee diaper, but poop can get on them and then you would want a new one. To cut down on all the washing, you could buy a ton of covers, enough to last you about a week and then do one large load of them.

This is such a helpful post! I've debated cloth diapering but using a service to do it (no laundry in unit, I'm lazy, etc.). I was actually looking it up today and it seems like they provide the inserts and not the covers? So I don't know now...

Since we might still have more babies we chose to purchase a newborn stash with baby 2 (since baby 1 had such skinny legs, lol). I primarily purchased them through co-ops though (they are "China cheapies" but my one size "China cheapies" held up better than some of my expensive diapers with DS1!!) so the majority of them were only about $3.50 each. And they're all in ones.

DS2 just finished passing his meconium (he's 2 days old today) so we'll be starting cloth with his next change!

I used kissed by the moon and really liked them. I could rent any of the diapers they carry, new ones, and all of the deposits turned into store credit, so it only cost $30 per month, essentially.

I sparingly used cloth when H was a newborn, and for the next one I won't hesitate to do it. Have you looked into a diaper service? I don't know if your town has them, but ours does, and the price is comparable to disposables.

We also rented from Twin City diapers and they were fabulous! $35 a month, i think? I mean, they're pretty cheap! We used disposables for maybe 2 weeks. I just didn't like them. I still hate disposables! Once she hit about 8/9 lb, she started peeing through them, though, and we moved to the BG Freetimes.

I didn't find doing the extra laundry to be an issue at all. With all the barf and poop and pee and spit up, you're already forced to do laundry. An extra few loads a week was a miniscule blip on my radar, truly.

@JoyfulKiwi: From what I understand, we'll be doing so much laundry anyway that we won't notice an extra one per day with diapers, right?

@birdofafeather: @scg00387: My husband (who is actually way more into this idea that I am!) did some looking on ebay last night and I think we may try to buy a stash of used NB diapers instead of renting now! I'm going to keep an eye on the classified here, CL and Ebay and hopefully we'll be able to find enough to try this out.

@twodoghouse: yeah, honestly, I think a newborn/twin newborns is overwhelming no matter what. I didn't have disposables (and the ones we did have from the hospital gave him a rash and leaked), so I just had to suck it up and do laundry every day (very small NB stash). Honestly I think newborn diapers are LESS work than disposables because they don't leak/poop explode as much (in my experience) so you're doing less gross laundry/carseat scrubbing.

I agree with @birdofafeather, I don't regret buying at all. I sold the types I didn't like for what I paid for them, and kept the AIOs for LO#2.

we did a rental, which for one, i wouldn't do again as we used disposables for the first week or so until her stump fell off and then we only used them for a month as she plumped up quickly so we were able to use our BG 4.0s quickly.

for twins, i would assume they would be in NB size longer as they would be born smaller, so i would try to find used NB on sale. i bet you would be able to find them easily and really get great use out of them! CDing in the first 6 months before solids was actually easier than now that she has solid poops that we have to rinse out!

We did a rental from moderncloth and loved it. It was super easy and convinced us to go for cloth. I think logistically twins will only mean washing every day, instead of every other day?

We did the rental from Diaper Daisy (http://www.diaperdaisy.com/Newborn-Diaper-Rental_p_212.html) and I will totally do it again if we ever have another. We got 20 Kissaluvs Size 0 and 5 Thirsties XS covers and it was perfect. They have changed owners in the past year or two so the rental is a bit different than when I rented (3 years ago, gulp!) but I'd probably turn to them again since it was such a great experience.

@twodoghouse: my sister had twins and often talks longingly about how much $$ they'd have saved if they'd done cloth. they were both very late to potty train, like 4+ (preemies and had some complicating health issues). I've heard great things about newborn rentals, also keep in mind that if you buy they have resale value!

For years I thought we'd cloth diaper once we had a LO, but when we found out it was twins I put that on hold because I couldn't imagine all the life changes of having two babies plus figuring out a diaper system.

But now I'm finding that my husband and I are having a really hard stomaching the idea of throwing out ~600 diapers per month (per the estimates I've read on twin message boards).

I'm also worried that they will be small and will take a while before they could fit into one size cloth diapers. Did anyone do a newborn cloth rental at first to try out the idea of cloth? Do you have a site you recommend? Any suggestions would be appreciated! :)
