I had an elective scan done around 15/16 weeks with LO1, was told girl...went to my anatomy scan at 20 weeks and it was definitely a boy.

My husband's cousin's wife had an elective scan at 15 weeks and was told girl. Then at 18 weeks she was in a car wreck and found out it was a boy. He's almost 4.

I only know one person who was told the wrong gender. She had an elective scan at 16 weeks and was told boy, then went to her anatomy scan at 18 weeks and it was a girl.

I have my anatomy scans at MFM at 17 weeks and they've always matched my blood test results.

I would personally be too nervous to trust scans before 16 weeks, but I know it works out for lots of people!

My anatomy scan was done on the early side with DD (17-18ish weeks) and they wouldn't confirm sex and we had to come back (for other reasons too) at 20 weeks. I would just be worried they would get it wrong!

I didn't do an ultrasound but I did do the genetic testing which is the most accurate way to find out the gender. It was a $200 out of pocket but so worth it. I got to find out the gender about a month and a half in advance and testing was correct. Ultrasound confirmed the gender as well.

I had the NT scans at 13w done and my doc gave me a "guess" on sex with my last three kids. He was right every time. So if you want a first guess going at 14 weeks should work out.

I had an elective ultrasound done when my son was 15 weeks because my 20 week anatomy scan couldn't be scheduled until 22 weeks when my insurance year reset. This place was correct. My doctor said it wasn't a big deal to do once or twice but that you wouldn't want to be doing it every week.

@twodoghouse: oh its only like $50 for an elective u/s here. The $800 was for the blood test. :)

I love that I'm not the only impatient one here! Maybe I'll feel more confident if I just wait a BIT. Like 15 or 16 weeks instead of 14 :) I have a little time left to decide (12 weeks this week). Just so impatient!

I had an elective ultrasound at 16+2 to find out the sex and it was a great experience. I don't think I'd feel confident about it much before 16 weeks though, I'd be second guessing until the anatomy scan.

Yes - we did it at 15 wks for DD3 bc my SIL was getting married and asked us if we wanted to do a gender reveal at one of the events leading up to the wedding (since extended family would be there). It was correct (though they worked for a good 15 mins to get baby into the right position!), as were the guesses at my NT scan for DD1 and DD2 (the tech wouldn't guess for DD3).

ETA: the people at the elective places ARE trained techs, and DO look at ultrasounds all day long, so I would think they'd be able to tell if your doctor's office could!

@Mae: Yeah, I didn't think about that. I called to ask our u/s place how much our 1st trimester scan would cost, and they told me $800. We got the final bill for $250. I was waiting for another bill (since our insurance plan doesn't cover u/s), and they told me that's the negotiated rate, and the $800 was if our insurance didn't offer coverage for it at all. CRAZY how different those numbers can be. AMERICA!! ;)

I've seen photos (illustrations?) of the genitalia at that stage, and it looks soooo similar. I'd be afraid they'd tell us the wrong sex. Do you have the option of a blood test (as it's way more accurate)?
