We definitely won't be doing it this year as she's way too young to understand it. I'm not a fan of the whole naughty/nice element of Christmas, so we're planning to skip over that entirely (as best we can) even where Santa's involved. There are so many kids who don't get presents on Christmas and it has nothing to do with them being naughty. I'm a firm believer that you shouldn't threaten your kids with a punishment that you won't follow through on. There is no way that I would end up not getting my son presents for Christmas. Even if he was making naughty choices. If when he is older he complains that he's the only one without the elf I could see me getting it and just having it as a more of a decoration that moves around each night but not using the story that he watches from Santa. Or with any luck this fad will be over by the time he's old enough to know that other kids have this thing. I taught kindergarten, and had a mother "gift" our class an elf to use one December. She thought she was being so nice, but it meant that 1) I had to pretend he was non-denominational to make sure no one complained and 2) I had to spend time every day after school coming up with a new place for him. As though teachers don't have enough on their plates-keeping up the elf magic/shenanigans in a public school kind of sucked! I decided then and there it wouldn't be something I'd personally do with my kids-it stressed me out! When my son was little it was a way for my husband and I to amuse each other for a month. Last year though our son got old enough to get the idea and lived hunting for him in the morning. My husband started to get pretty creative too so it was neat. A few backs my son started saying how his elf is coming soon. He talks about it a lit now and tells everyone about it. However, my MIL and SIL think it's super great and are those people that post daily FB pics of what the elf is up to. I have a feeling I'm going to get one for Christmas. I'm not really sure how to tell them it's not something our family is doing without sounding like I'm insulting them for doing it.</p> <p>And I don't get when people (like SIL and MIL) have the elf making all kinds of messes and getting into trouble.
