@MsLipGloss: The OP started with a plan to start the Atkins diet. I am encouraging a healthier alternative.

@Amelieisme: Being kind to your body does not mean that you have to eat junk and remain sedentary. However, women need time to recover from pregnancy/birth, and doing too much too soon can have negative consequences for both mama and baby.

@PrincessBaby: I agree you should be kind to your body and your baby. But the idea that it means that you can't eat healthy and exercise to me is a little off. Glad to hear its going well for you so far!

@MsLipGloss: Yes, I clarified when exactly I started my diet in my post. The point is that I didn't restrict calories at all and lost the weight just eating low carbs and paleo-style. I'm not encouraging anyone to starve themselves, but to eat healthy, protein-rich meals with fruits and veggies. The point of the Atkins diet is to restrict any access to sugar and to put yourself into "starvation mode" and put your body into ketosis to lose weight. The purpose of paleo is to eat healthy foods to nourish your body. It does not put you into ketosis--fruit, sweet potatoes, etc are your carbs and prevents your body from going into ketosis. I never bought into the Atkins thing, but paleo is just healthy. If the OP is looking for a way to lose the baby weight and stay healthy with good milk production for her baby, this is a good option, in my opinion.

@Rainbow Sprinkles: @HLK208: AGREED. Paleo is so much healthier and you will lose weight. Probably more slowly, but healthy.

I do a modified diet but the big differences is that there are NO grains and NO sugar. We use healthy sweeteners, pure maple syrup, raw honey, coconut sugar, dates, molasses, maple sugar and sucanat.

Here is my day of paleo:
Quinoa "cereal: with banana, blueberries, coconut milk and a tad of maple syrup

OR I like avocado and egg with a little amino acids and toasted sesame oil
also love to make a green smoothie to compliment breakfast. Some days it can be a replacement depending what I add to it.

Lunch: salmon mixed with lemon, seasoning, yogurt, celery and herbs and served in an avocado half

Dinner: crockpot pot roast (carrots, celery, potatoes, onions and meat), or peppered cauliflower tempeh with steak side salad and homemade dressing.

I never liked eating salads until I started paleo and making my own salad dressings.

With paleo I get all the nutrients I need by eating wholesome healthy food, but I'm healthy and full! I've had no issues with milk supply at all.

I feel like I'm eating MORE on this paleo diet, as all of the foods are so hearty. So after spending 3 meals and some snacks on Paleo, I am truly not worried at this point about milk supply bc I feel like I'm eating heartier and healthier than before. I do appreciate everyone's concern, as I am 6 wks PP tomorrow, but as someone who eats lighter in general (w/o having milk supply problems), this really feels like a heavier and more wholesome diet:)

@Amelieisme: You started your diet at 2 months pp (8 weeks) which can make a HUGE difference in terms of BF/milk supply. If I read correctly, @PrincessBaby is only 5 weeks pp, and she has not yet had a chance to fully establish her milk supply.

@PrincessBaby: I totally agree with @WinnieBee and @MediaGirl. You really need to be careful to take good care of yourself . . . you should be kind to your body.

Eating healthy is easy, you just have to be prepared! I usually have 2 big cooking days a week and cook everything I need for 3 days and put them in containers. Then mid week I will cook the rest.

Then all I need to do is throw a quick salad together or steam some veges. Grab a paleo friendly cook book, they will give you heaps of recipie ideas so you don't get bored of eating the same thing all the time. As long as your eating some form of protein with each meal you wont be missing any nutrients and neither will H.

The only way carb-cutting worked for me was on a flexible plan I came up with over time. Atkins made me feel lethargic and gross, and I couldn't handle the lack of fruit on South Beach. Instead, I cut all processed carbs (sugar, bread, most grains, etc). However, I still ate beans, quinoa occasionally for the protein, and a ton of fruit, veggies, and lean protein.
Dairy is also awesome for low-carb (but I'm allergic, so I stayed away).

@HLK208: thank you so much for the info! I really appreciate it- you convinced me to go paleo:). I hope I get good results like you! It felt so good when I was at Publix and the only things in my cart were veggies, meat, fruit, and nuts:). I will let you know!

This is going to be so much healthier than the processed crap I normally eat- like Lean Cuisines. When DH is gone and I'm away, I get lazy, but I'm really going to do this! Even I can throw a chicken breast in the oven and put some broccoli in the steamer while I bathe/feed H...

Carbs are good for you- you just have to eat the right ones at the right time ya know? Carbs give you energy so I would never cut them out, and also vegetables and fruits are forms of carbs so if you are cutting them out where do you draw the line?

I probably identify most with clean eating, nothing processed but I do eat some grains and yoghurt. I do eat gluten free though, and that helps my body a lot.

DH is a personal trainer and would not train me or let me change my diet until I got clearance from the doctor.

I did 30 days strict paleo while BF when LO was 2 mo (except I did eat oatmeal 3-4x/week). Lost 17 lb which was the remainder of my baby weight with no effect on my milk production. I didn't restrict calories at all (ate what i wanted as long as it was paleo-approved) and ran 3-4 mi 3x/week. Since then I haven't been as strict with the diet, but weight is stable. Worked wonders for me! And LO is healthy as can be :)

I'm not trying to be nosy, but I'm really concerned that you are exercising AND trying to diet so soon after birth. I agree with @mediagirl about seeing a nutritionist - you need to be very careful when dieting while BF - and exercising SO soon after birth. You birthed a baby a month ago - give yourself a break....

@PrincessBaby: so it's no lentils, rice, all other type of grains and dairy so it sounds difficult but for me, I don't like the taste of "want-to-be" healthy foods (like steel cut oatmeal) so it's not too hard. It's about eating earthy foods to fuel your body, and it's a way of living more than a diet. From what I've read lol because I'm only a few weeks into it.

An example of my daily eating...
breakfast: 2-3 eggs, a half avocado
snack: green tea and cashews
lunch: big salad with chicken, bacon, lemon, sea salt and pepper + extra virgin olive oil
snack: baked kale chips and a berry, banana, coconut milk smoothie
Dinner: ground beef stuffed bell peppers

I eat big portions and I'm not that hungry. I use a ton of herbs and seasoning so I'm not missing flavor. Pinterest has a ton of good recipes as well. I also bought a few iBooks on Paleo eating that have explained the basics like Everyday Paleo is a good one. There's a Paleo support thread on here too!

You should see a nutritionist if you are planning on dieting while breastfeeding. They can help you figure out the right plan for you. You don't want to deny your baby nutrients they need if you are the baby's sole provider.

I would highly recommend a meeting with a nutritionist before trying any sort of diet while breastfeeding.

Your diet isn't something you should be messing around or experimenting with while you are the only source of nutrition for your child - everything you eat affects her too. Her health is far more important than losing weight fast. There will be time for that later.

Cutting out processed foods and sugar is one thing, restricting carbs is quite another. You NEED a minimum carb load everyday to keep producing quality milk, so cutting carbs right now could be detrimental. Look into a nutritional plan that is specifically designed for breastfeeding moms, like weight watchers, or put off the dieting altogether.

Paleo is a whole food diet and isn't supposed to affect breastfeeding. It's high in meat and veggies. But it could, it's hard to say until you try it. Not eating enough calories (especially since you are working out again) would be more detrimental, so make sure that what you eat is healthy and whole food or it will backfire. Paleo can be high in fat, but that's not necessarily a bad thing, ya know? It's hard to wrap your brain around fat=good when you're trying to lose fat.

Here's an article on Mark's Daily Apple about breastfeeding and going primal (which is my personal preference, as I like greek yogurt for a snack and find that cheese and butter don't bother me): http://www.marksdailyapple.com/nursing-primal-blueprint-diet/#axzz2HsJycajZ

Even Mark says that it's not wise to go no/low carb, but I just scanned it real quick. There are also a lot of comments that could be helpful.

I did South Beach years ago and did lose weight, but it wasn't really sustainable for me. I had no energy whatsoever and there is no way I could have taken care of a baby, much less breastfed. I think something like Paleo would be more sustainable since you can have some healthy carbs with it.
But if BFing is important to you, which from your posts I think it is, I would be very careful about any restrictive diet plans. I know WW does have accommodations for BFing, but don't know anything more than that.

Paleo is not "low carb". Paleo is grain free and for a lot of people gluten free (which is often found in grain). Paleo is also dairy free but I know a lot of Paleo people who still have some dairy in their diet. Paleo is about eating the best quality and nutritious food to fuel your body. Lots of lean protein and a lot of veggies but it doesn't restrict fruits because they're healthy carbs. Other bees are a lot more knowledgable about Paleo so they might have better info for you.

South beach worked for me, but they allow a lot of aspartame and I love sugar free gum and diet coke so I went crazy, which I don't think helped me lose weight. I lost 15 pounds in 3 months but I was working out twice a day too.

Have you considered the Paleo diet? That's what I've been doing and I breastfeed. I just eat a lot more eggs, veggies, avocado and meat, and I've lost 7 pounds since starting the 1st. I feel so much better too. I've cut out bread, dairy and gluten.

I did Atkins & it was wretched. I never felt good or healthy, which is the whole point of a diet. My brother has done Atkins like 10 times. He always loses a BUNCH of weight over the first two months, but as soon as he goes back to normal foods he balloons right back. It's not a good way to lose weight and keep it off, and I'm really convinced it's not healthy!

@PrincessBaby: I did the green smoothie thing for a while and want to get back on it! It was variations of this: http://kimberlysnyder.net/blog/ggs/
When I'm doing the smoothie I have a hardboiled egg and fruit for breakfast with the smoothie. Nuts and small salad with the smoothie for lunch and then a normal family dinner (minus any extra starch or carbs). It was a good way to eat healthy during the workday and still enjoy dinner with DH & DS when I got home.

ETA: while breastfeeding I'd eat my extra calories in greek yogurt or a piece of cheese to get in some dairy and extra protein

Also, the only weight-loss program I know of that takes BFing into account is Weight Watchers.

I think I'm going to start South Beach. I got the book, so I'm going to give it a try when I finish reading it.

Although, I'm pretty sure none of these diets are kosher when you are BFing. If you are wanting to continue with that, you needs to be eating enough to have calories for yourself and for her, which is about 500 EXTRA on top of the healthy amount you should be taking in on a given day.
