@shortcake: I'm not on the listserve, but I'm going to look for it now. I feel like I'm so into baby prep and pregnancy stuff at the moment, but I better start thinking about life AFTER this LO gets here. Thanks again for the info.

This has really interested me for a while! It seems like such a good compromise between the group setting and affordability of daycare, and the individual attention and home setting of a nanny. One of my potential scenarios when we have a baby is to work part-time, and it would be great to find someone with a full-time nanny who would let us nanny share 2-3 days a week.

@mrsjazz: Let us know how it works out! Sounds like a great setup.

@bkcaribbaby: are you part of the bococa parent boards? It is a great resource if you live in the boerum hill/cobble hill/carroll gardens neighborhoods. I actually found my nanny through a neighborhood friend I met as part of a pregnancy group (who is now in my mom group, another great resource). There lots of nanny suggestions on the boards or you can post that you are searching for one, I found our share family on there too! Or if you have friends with nannies, ask them to ask their nannies if they have any friends looking for work, they are a tight group.

When we have a baby we will have no choice but to do a nanny share. There are no daycares anywhere near us that take infants and we cant' afford a nanny on our own. Honestly I don't know how anyone finds daycare for an infant in this city I'm not sure if it actually exists!

@shortcake: Thanks! I just downloaded the PSP guide to a nanny share, it's very helpful. You brought up some great points, we've only talked about salary & benefits with the family, so we'll need to go over everything else. Both of our babies like to love tap and gnaw on human flesh :) so that could be an issue.

We're in Kensington.

We are in Boerum Hill. What about you?

So drawbacks. When the nanny calls in sick or takes a holiday, you need back up care or a really flexible job. We generally try to take a vacation when the nanny does, but sick days are a bit of a scramble. But she has only taken 2 in four months. We do 2 days at our place and 2 at the other family's house, but I will say you save some money from the nanny being at the other house all day (supplies, toilet paper, paper towels, electricity, etc.). And no mess to clean up at your place.

Make sure you and the other family are compatible and talk about what you would do if they are sick, take a day off, go out of town, etc. You really need to keep the lines of communication open to make sure problems and issues are resolved quickly. For example, what if your kid starts biting or hitting their kid. How would everyone handle it. Have a contract between both families and the nanny detailing the logistics. There are good examples on park slope parents website. Plan ahead for contingencies as best as possible. As long as the other family is pretty close, it should work well. Designate who will pay for certain expenses (double stroller, two high chairs, snacks, etc.). Talk about salary, benefits, bonuses, raises, etc ahead of time.

Otherwise, with a great nanny and a compatible family, the share can be super easy and very cost effective and a great built in socialization for the kids. We love our share so far mostly because the other family is very laid back and their son is a super chill baby.

Another benefit to it being at one house is that all the toys and gear are in one place.

Hope that helps, but let me know if you need more specifics.

@shortcake: Brooklyn? Yay! Where in BK if you don't mind saying? What are the few drawbacks? Right now the biggest drawback is that we have to go to their house, but their house is bigger than our apartment, so more space for the kiddies.

We're doing something similar to a nanny share-- a nanny who has her own baby is coming to our place to take care of both her child and mine. At the time she starts LMW will be 6 months old and her daughter will be 4 months. It's just for 10 months (until LMW is old enough to start at our daycare) so I wanted to have a nanny instead of infant daycare, but couldn't afford it, so this option was perfect for us.

I'm not doing a nanny share, but it's really common here. It has worked out great for several friends. I hope you find a good match!

We currently have a short-term full-time nanny until mid-December. We told her there was an option to continue but there's no way we can afford her long term. We found a nanny share through our neighborhood listserv, the family seems great, the baby is a couple of months older, and both babies are girls with boy names so I feel like it's kismet. We meet the nanny tonight.

The nanny share will save us at least $600 a month and our LO gets to socialize with another baby. All the daycares in our area seem to be booked for babies with no openings until next summer!

Is anyone doing a nanny share? How is it working out? Do you like the other family?
