Aside from govt employees, my best friend who teaches at the Naval academy cannot teach. I work in real estate, and we are having some challenges with deals that have VA loans, and several of the banks cannot order IRS transcripts to verify employment so closings will be late. The whole thing is incredibly annoying. I wish they would put on their big girl panties and be adults. So he's working, but we won't get a paycheck until the shutdown ends. :/ I work as a librarian in a public system, and there is talk that if the shutdown lasts any real length of time, there will be cuts to our schedules (since the system relies so heavily on federal funding). We'll see what happens. My dad may not get his disability or retirement money from the military depending on how long the shutdown continues. If this isn't taken care of by the end of the month, we may have to shutter our small business. The shutdown/furlough mainly sucks for us financially because we're trying to prep for our LO's arrival and that entails a lot of new expenses (it sucks generally for a lot of other reasons, of course). Also, my agency wasn't affected by sequester furloughs during the last FY. However, I know a lot of people aren't nearly so lucky and I feel really bad for them. I'm operating under the assumption we won't get any backpay. Tomorrow I'm going to work at my coworker's house. If congress doesn't come up with something in 2 weeks time, I'll be forced to take a week of PTO and then be on unpaid leave. It won't impact him significantly as he is months away from retirement. DH is a government contractor. He's not sure what will happen. His project is fully funded but I think his campus may shut down. We'll be ok financially for a while but we're shopping for a home. Any days he misses might significantly impact our mortgage approval. LO had pneumonia last week and I missed 4 days unpaid so we're looking at a lot of missed income from our paychecks. I'm not sure how many underwriters will forgive. A lot of my job depends on approval from federal employees and now that they're gone I can't do a significant portion of my work :sad: it's weird! and not to mention our annual reports are due the end of this month but I'm not sure what to do since they are the ones that we send them to and who review them. An administrative assistant in his office will have to withdraw money from her kids' college fund that she's been working so hard to save if this goes on for much longer. I'm having to do some meeting cancelling and rearranging because I work with a bunch of feds, but at least I'm still getting my normal paycheck. DH and his colleagues are not hopeful about getting back pay for the shutdown. He found out yesterday that his department has enough funds from last year to cover essential employees, so they won't be furloughed UNLESS the department runs out of money before the lapse ends. Unfortunately, the admin person who blasted the email was furloughed :(
