I am not against it completely, but we will restrict it. DS is almost 4 now, and he has yet to play the Wii. He does have a MobyGo though, but those are educational games he will play once in a while when we need to start calming down and not run around the house crazy!

I am also a firm believer on restricting TV. We only have Netflix, so its not too hard, but we only get to watch cartoons in the morning, then its off for the day. I also won't put a TV in his room. And in the summer, we never have the TV on.

I'm not against it and considering we own a Wii and a Playstation, I'm sure future children will play them.

You have to be a parent and control when and for how long your child can play. If you do that, video games aren't going to make your child overweight and inactive.

Dh loves his video games. I on the other hand cant stand them. I personally think there are so many other better things you can do with your time. That being said I am NOT agains them, just the amount of time on them. SD has a nintendo DS. She has a few games on the wii. But doesnt play all that much on them. We really end up doing so much outside of the house as a family and what not so I never see it being a problem.

I think it's inevitable that my LO will play video games. I'll just make sure she doesn't play them often or for too long.

No, I am not against it. My DH loves to play video games so I'm sure it will be an activity he'll eventually do with our daughter. But just like everything else, TV, Internet, junk food - moderation is key. And aren't there studies that some video game playing is good for you? Something about boosting cognitive skills.

Not against it. Some parents are just lazy parents. We had a nintendo/sega growing up and we weren't overweight. We played outside plenty.
Some parents today don't want to set restrictions because they are afraid of hurting their child's feelings.
My daughter is 5 and she is getting a Nintendo 3DS because I as a parent can control how long she plays.
Even her internet time is restricted. I'm not going to let her play on PBSkids.org for 8 hours while I do something else.
We have the Kinect for Xbox and even that has time restrictions.

@runsyellowlites: oh yeah, no no no.... more like if there's a half hour wait at Olive Garden or something... shoot, even I get frustrated and impatient waiting for food, haha.. but at the table? nope!

there will for sure be a no DS/cellphone/ipad rule at all dinner tables.

@rachiecakes: For sure. DS can play his ds if we're on a car ride or there have been times when I have a meeting or something like that and I need him occupied and quiet. We don't let him when we're out to eat though, but only b/c we've had issues with DH's niece and HAVING to play something and then refusing to interact with DS when we all eat together. After some frustrating meals we just told DS that he couldn't take/play his anymore.

I don't mind if our LO plays video games if we're in the car or waiting a a restaurant, etc. I've seen kids tat are crazy addicted to video games really young and refuse to interact with other kids, play outside. No way would I let that happen. Nintendo DS would go directly in the dumpster.

We aren't big video gamers but I see so many kids "playing with friends" on video games (online) rather than going outside and playing kick all or something. I see myself highly restricting them and encouraging outdoor fun. We do have a wii and Xbox that we don't play very often. My husband usually plays Xbox after LO is in bed so hopefully her exposure will be minimal

DS can play video games (his DS or Xbox) on mon, wed, & fri for about 30-45 minutes.... Sometimes longer on Monday because he takes his DS with him while I work. Otherwise he's playing outside or with his toys. It works & since he prefers playing outside he still gets ALOT of exercise. Lol

ETA: DH is off on Fridays so DS and him usually will play a 2 player super hero game together... DS LOVES it! lol

I think they can be quite addictive so I hope to foster a love of outdoors and learning to play other things before she learns video games. Neither of us play any video games now but we did play sometimes growing up. If she plays occassionally that's fine but it's probably not something we'll keep around the house much.

We don't play video games often. We have a wii, which we use once in a while and I'm fine with her playing too. I'm really not worried about it because we're not big video game people so I don't expect her to be either.

I've done a lot of research on the effect of video games, and it's pretty clear they are unfairly demonized. That said, I do plan on restricting their usage with our kids... just to encourage physical activity!

We don’t play any video games or have any video game systems in our home, so I don’t think that will be too much of a problem for a while (I hope). We’re planning on instituting a “no TV” policy in their room as well.

We have discussed this because I'm not a fan but my husband loves his video games. I don't think we can say no to them but I think we can restrict the amount of play per day. I want my child to be outside playing and enjoying the nice weather we have in North Carolina, not sitting in front of a TV playing video games.

Technology has taken over, and more and more kids are overweight. Not to mention I see less involved parents because TV or video games are the 'babysitter.' Now I'm not saying I won't ever let my child play video games but I'm planning on significantly restricting it, and delaying introducing them. Anyone else thought about this?
