Ugh, that sucks!

Julia had to spend a day in peds because of high bili leves the day after I got discharged... it was super craptastic not being able to take her home and having her be in the little isolate with the bili lights. :( Sorry you had to go through something similar (for longer)! :(

To tell you the truth, they haven't rechecked Julia's bili levels since she was discharged... I hope that's okay!!! I took some photos in which I thought she looked a little yellow, but most times I think her color looks good. She has seen the pediatrican twice since discharge and she wasn't concerned with her color... so I hope everything is okay!

Out of curiosity, are H's stools still green, or are they yellow now? If they're yellow, that's probably a good sign.

ETA: Maybe it's just in the first few days of life, but I thought it was okay if the bili levels went up a bit, since baby is getting older? Does that apply later on?

It sounds like you guys have been through a lot... I hope things improve soon!!!

(My jaundiced little one)

Hang in there. Both of my boys had jaundice so I know sort of how you feel. We were in and out of the ped's office the first two weeks with my oldest. Sucked! My second was under the light from hour 14 to his fourth day when we were in the hospital bc his levels went up fast after birth.

So sorry to hear all this for you and H! I am no ped but I'm totally with mrsjacks...get a second opinion or something! I guess technically you have but there is no way in hell I would take LO off the boob in this case, and I have no problem with formula whatsoever. My DS had bili levels that were high but after some sun and tons of bfeeding his yrllowness went down after a few weeks.

@PrincessBaby: no not because of nipple confusion. She just really didn't like to nurse. I think she was a lazy eater. She would only nurse for 5 mins and then stop and fall asleep. So I would need to pump anyways. I got mastitis twice by 3 months so I decided to just pump. I was heading back to work as well.

With my son we introduced the bottle early on too but with breast milk and he just didn't like it. He preferred to nurse.

@luckypenny: Agree.

You have to factor in whats best for yourself and your own mental and emotional health. Harper will flourish no matter which option you choose, but will you? I wish you the best of luck! Ive been where you are and its not an easy place to be. I hope you are able to make a decision you are at peace with.

@PrincessBaby: So at this point, it would be really hard for her to jump up like that, her body has changed and the nomogram doesn't even apply to her any more.

I know you guys are nervous, but this is bread and butter pediatrics and I think as long as she's under 17 you should be totally fine. She'll plateau somewhere and just stay around there.

Deep breaths. It'll be ok. Please, Please don't take her off the breast again. It's good for her to breastfeed and if anything, I'd offer it to her more!

There is no data to say that a bili less than 10 is any better or worse than a bili of 16 in a baby of Harper's age.

Many hugs, this too will pass!

@Mrs. Jacks: I thought about messaging you for your opinion but didn't want to bother you...So he seems to be concerned because it keeps going up slowly. It just creeps up and up and up. I don't think he's maybe had very many cases that have lasted this long, but the ones that he has had seemed to have very slowly went down over a long period of time. If she's not under like 10 or 11 on Thursday, he is sending us to a GI doctor. So that's in the works...I haven't consulted with another ped because I really love her dr. Like really love. And I am a paranoid person, probably the type of parent that drives you nuts because I research everything and am consumed with anxiety and worry about everything that's not perfect! So I think that he maybe is also "taking care" of me, trying to get the issue quickly resolved to ease my mind because he knows I'm a nervous wreck. When we got d/c from the hospital, she was a 10. Just 48 hours later she was 21. So that's my fear every day, that she will jump and be close brain damage territory. So on one hand I appreciate that he is pretty equally annoyed that it hasn't gone down, and on the other hand I am wondering if it is just something that will take time and is a PITA, and if he should just be telling me that and not letting my nerves drive a treatment plan....So I appreciate your input bc it kind of supports the latter!

My daughter had breast milk jaundice. Once they determined it was breast milk jaundice they said it would go away on its own and I could continue to breast feed her. She's 4 now and I pumped breast milk for a year for her. It was stressful up until the diagnosis with the constant blood test to Check her levels and the 72 hour of formula. I would get a second opinion if you want to breast feed. She didn't stop looking yellow till 3 months.

I agree with Mrs. Jacks, I think this is something you need to seriously look at and perhaps consult with another doctor, since it doesn't seem that your ped is following standard guidelines and is making your life (and Harper's!) harder than it needs to be.
Nobody is infallible - at this point I think it's time to seek a second opinion.

My cousin's baby struggled with this. It went on until her baby was 11 weeks. However their doctor told them that they should by no means quit breastfeeding. So, she never did. She continued to breastfeed and their baby got light therapy three times. It resolved himself and now at five months baby is perfectly healthy.
If you want to breastfeed....don't quit!

I'm not sure why you guys or your ped are so focused on getting the bili levels down? They are not harmful at this point and you've pretty definitively made the diagnosis with the trial of formula. Here are the AAP guidelines on breast milk jaundice:

Management
Avoid interruption of breastfeeding in healthy term babies.
No routine indication for water or formula supplementation.
If bilirubin >20 mg/dL, consider phototherapy.
Rule out other causes of prolonged jaundice.

If your ped has questions please refer them to the guidelines :) They can continue looking for other stuff, but it's pretty clear from the work up that's already been done. I just want to give you fuel for your arsenal, but really if your ped is uncomfortable at this point, have them consult a GI doc who will tell you all the same thing.

Here's a link: http://emedicine.medscape.com/article/973629-treatment

So sorry baby H is going through this!! I HATE jaundice!!
My baby was under intensive lights for 3 days because he and I have a blood type incompatibility. He was on mostly formula for the first few days of his life too.
I still supplement with a few ounces of formula every few days since I can't keep up with his voracious appetite.
I'm sure H will get better.. Try not to stress (although easier said than done) and don't feel bad about feeding her formula!
Thinking of your family and hoping her levels stay down!

Sorry you are going thru this :( I don't know if my LO had persistent jaundice or not but at 5 weeks she still had levels of 13 from 21. She looked yellow up until maybe 7 weeks. Anyway, my doc never told us to switch to formula...they told us it could take 3 months for the levels to be normal. Try not to stress out mama! Just keep on feeding her and making her poop!

LO had to go under the lights twice... But after his second time, 1 day under the light, he's level went down and we never had any issue. We didn't have breast feeding jaundice though, his was due to being premature. I'm so sorry you are going through this. Hugs

I'm so sorry! We had a jaundice baby when she was born and she was under the lights for 2 days. Luckily she was able to get rid of it, but it was stressful. She also had nipple confusion as well as issues nursing, so we had to bottle feed. Do whatever is best for her, I know it sucks when you have your heart set on breastfeeding, but if formula helps her than stick with it. We had to swtich to formula at 8 weeks, due to my milk being too rich for her tummy. A happy healthy baby is so much better I promise you!

So sorry hun!! :( DId the doc say what causes breastmilk jaundice? Is it something in your diet or just a fluke thing? I really hope H's levels go down and stay down!

We have been dealing with jaundice since H was 4 days old. She is 4 weeks tomorrow. Her levels have been super high (21) and then down low after being on the Bili lights for 3 days in the Peds unit, then they have crept up since then....I even had to stop BFing because her dr wanted to make a diagnosis of "Breast Milk Jaundice" which is when something in the breastmilk keeps her liver from breaking down bilirubin. Her levels went down. Then we had to start BFing again, which was drama in itself, as she got lazy and had Nipple Confusion, but I Bf'd her constantly for a couple of days and she was latching on again...After all of that, her levels have continued to go up and have leveled off around 14. It's just not going down. So today, her Ped did a urine test to rule out a bladder infection, and they had to put a CATHETER in her to get her urine sample. Then we had to get her foot punctured (probably for the 20th time!) to check her Bili levels right after, and I cried the whole way home that she is so tiny and has been through so much! It's not fair! I know that sounds so ridiculous, but I'm so tired of watching her sweet little self go through all of this!

We are going to formula AGAIN for 72 hours. I love BFing and I'm all for it, but this baby has been through ENOUGH and this may truly be a case of a situation where Breast is NOT the best for her. And last time I was really upset about it, but I never expected this to go on this long. So now I'm at a point where I really don't care if I can't BF her anymore. I just want out of this Bilirubin Nightmare.

So we have to see what Thursday's test brings. And if it's not down a significant amount, like under 10, then we are getting referred to a Gastro. For MORE testing and poking and prodding and dr's appointments.

I know many of you have had jaundice babies...Has anyone had "persistent jaundice" where this PITA will NOT go away???

Sorry for the rant! Today was super stressful for Dh and I both! I think I'm going to really hit the wine tonight!

My heart just BREAKS for my little yellow princess baby!!! Her color is worse in the past couple of days, you can see here:
