Whipping up hysteria about Christians being persecuted in other countries (that's to garner support for the muslim ban, even though they keep insisting it's not a muslim ban), BIG headline about Trump "defending Religious Freedom", headlines asking if Democratic Party is "in trouble", negative new about Iran (to further garner support for a ban against all Iranian nationals), etc. etc.</p> <p>On MSNBC, you've got a main headline saying Dems are Forcing the GOP to fix a broken system, a whole tab set up to showcase "Aleppo's Children", smaller headings about Trump's Black History Month snafu yesterday and about Planned Parenthood's popularity.</p> <p>They couldn't be more different. If you read a conservative news source, the coverage is pretty different and makes it look like the administration is actually doing some fairly sane stuff with some hiccups. And I can see their point of view... IMHO Bush and Obama also did some really awful stuff that people should have been howling about and protesting in the streets, but somehow they just didn't cause this level of outrage. I guess the thinking is, this could be no worse? I wonder though if they have any line in their mind that Trump should not cross. And what that line is. Honestly, I've felt better since I started being more active by calling my representatives frequently and attending protests/events/rallys. It feels better to just DO something. But then I know I have to be careful not to overextend myself. I'm also trying to be concious of keeping up with my self care and spending quality time with my husband and kid. The logic is so flawed in many ways especially since all the people impacted have already been through the visa/green card application process and there is a lot of vetting done before you can get a US work or residency visa</p> <p>Also no one is thinking about how frustrating this is for people from those countries who are here. I guess I didn't realize how racist and xenophobic so many people I know are and I've been pretty hurt by it all.</p> <p>I have a cousin that posts pretty prolifically on FB and it's all really terrible stuff. And sometimes I get the energy and courage to speak up against it, but it's hard because his personal FB becomes a pileon from all his friends-and this is a 40-something year old man in ruralish Virginia. So his friends are all adults, parents, citizens...but their responses are usually just absolutely out and out chillingly evil.</p> <p>He's posted about 3 times in the last 12 hours various rants all on the same theme: that immigrants/refugees (yes, he conflates the two) are secretly out to get us, that they want to come here and not work and just take from American's social services, that they want to come here and make the US live under sharia law. Just basically every ridiculous thing ever said.</p> <p>I had a girl I went to HS with claim that these refugees would rape and burn houses down if people here tried to help them. I'm not making this stuff up. Every single one of these people are parents. So they are raising kids to believe this stuff. THAT is what's getting me down. How can we be from the same family? I feel like it is especially important to stay informed and up to date with the news and what is actually happening, but it is really hard emotionally. I have donated extra money to NPR and subscribed to the NYT because I want to support news outlets that I feel are quality. </p> <p>I find I feel better when I am actively involved. I have saved the numbers of my Senators and Representative to my phone and am working to make daily calls. I have also signed up with multiple sites that email daily or weekly actions to take. I am attending multiple protests and getting involved with local organizations that are actively fighting injustices that are occurring.
