Larabars (as suggested), nutbutters in smoothies!, full fat dairy!, whole wheat tortillas and bread and pasta with olive oil and butter and cheese. Chocolate milk is 300 caloroes for one tiny cup! Find things you love... I love Quesadas and one tortilla ww is 300 calories plus add cheese... butter or oil... I also used salad dressing! And added sunflower seeds or sesame seeds...

Honestly, I don't pay attention to calories. I eat when I'm hungry and what sounds good at the moment.

I never counted calories and I don't now that I'm pregnant. It's served me well (28 weeks and very healthy weight gain for both me and baby so far). Just listen to your body and maybe try eating a lot of smaller meals. I know that for me, eating big meals is hard and makes me feel full too fast to finish.

I've been so nauseous and vomity that I haven't even been thinking about calories yet. I'm just trying to eat whatever bland food I can keep down. I've actually lost 2 pounds since getting pregnant.

I'm only 11 weeks, though, so it's not that big a deal yet.

My OB doesn't weigh patients, so this has never come up in either of my pregnancies. As long as the baby's measurements are on target (and I get an ultrasound each month, so we check these regularly), nothing gets said about weight or calorie intake, which is nice. I've never had to count calories and I think doing so would be stressful for me. I try to eat small portions regularly and fill up on nutritionally sound items, but overall don't put too much thought into it - I think I'd go crazy if I did.

I discussed this was my midwife at my last appointment. Because I was/am overweight, she said the important thing is that I am eating well-rounded meals. She said there is no reason to push myself to eat more than I am hungry for, as long as I am not trying to lose weight, or losing a lot of weight all at once. I am currently still about 6 lbs under my pre-pregnancy weight (and over 18 weeks pregnant).

I would recommend using the regular version of items instead of light or low fat to increase your caloric intake and add in some snacks like cheese and nuts. Add back in the things you like, but had phased out to meet the 1200 calories. I know when I have limited calories in the past, I pretty much quit eating cheese/mayo/butter on anything, used only fat free dairy products and very few treats.

Like PPs said, I didn't worry about it too much when I was pregnant - just tried to make sure I was eating a variety of foods, eating when I was hungry, and checking with my dr about weight gain.

A nutritionist once told me that to gain weight I absolutely had to have between-meal snacks and that almost everything I put in my mouth needed to be high in calories/nutritionally dense. She told me that every snack needed to have at least 300 calories, and if I had to do something less than nutritionally "perfect" like a milkshake or ice cream cone or fast-food fries once and a while to meet that, so be it. Every circumstance is different, so if you're concerned, I would go talk to a medical professional. Also, I'd check to make sure your doctor/midwife thinks you're off-track for weight gain. Being at the low end of the recommendations isn't necessarily a cause for concern.

To answer your question, the very dense stuff I like includes: full-fat dairy, nut butters, smoothies (use whole yogurt, add honey, and don't use water or ice cubes), olive oil (as a condiment or in a salad dressing), crackers/breads with cheese/butter, dried fruit, chocolate, and um...milkshakes! Things like Larabars and Clif Bars are also good for getting calories in when you can't lug around a lunchbox or cooler for your snacks. Look for the bars that are at least a couple hundred calories.

I probably eat way more than any recommendation. My pregnancy just makes me hungry! Last pregnancy I couldn't eat much cause she was too high. I don't even know recommendations for calories.

Since I have extremely sick pregnancies, I don't worry a thing about calories--more just about trying to get anything in, and staying down. I still managed to gain an amount that made my doctor happy both times.

@JoyfulKiwi: same here! Fwiw I lost in the first tri but gained 26lbs net. Admittedly I could have eaten healthier but it turned out ok.

I never counted my calories during pregnancy. I ate when I was hungry (and I was hungry more often), didn't when I wasn't, & made sure to ask about my weight gain at each Dr.'s appointment. I'd check with your doctor on your next visit, but otherwise not worry too much about it :)

@polkadots: I am totally in the same boat. My first question to my OB was if I had to take in additional calories over what my maintenance calories would have been (which would have been adding an additional 700-800 calories to what I was eating.) She said to try to work back up to 2000 from 1700. I just have a lot more snacks, one of my favorite go-to snacks is trail mix (peanuts, raisins, chocolate chips.) And I also drink milk now, where before I would only drink calorie free drinks (water and and unsweetened iced tea.)

I have no idea how many calories I should be eating but I did stop caring so much about calories when I got pregnant and it seems to be working out for me. Like, 2% yogurt instead of fat free, not measuring out my peanut butter or cheese, etc.

Before pregnancy I was trying to lose weight, so my stomach was use to 1200 calories a day plus working out. Now I'm suppose to be at 2300 calories a day and I just can't get there. After all my meals today... I still need to get 900 more calories, but I'm not hungry!

What foods are you adding into your diet to get more calories?
