@Bookworm: When I got my news from the Daily Show last night and they did mention it - which is really ironic. What a shame that is wasn't mentioned.

@MamaG: From what I can tell in this article, http://dfw.cbslocal.com/2013/06/24/texas-republicans-on-verge-of-passing-abortion-law/, it would limit abortions to surgical centers, meaning that yes, in reality there will be more than 5 places to get one. So, (and this is where it gets muddy for me) they are trying to shut down clinics where they are done electively, meaning that non-life saving abortions, not medically necessary abortions, would only be available at 5 locations in the state. Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong here, people! :)

@hummusgirl: @zippylef: @TemperanceBrennan: What really got my goat last night was that of the 3 reports I watched on TV, 0 mentioned the fact that the legislature tried to change the time stamp on the vote. I wonder if it wasn't a verifiable thing or what, but it really bothered me!

I watched the heat of it last night and stayed up way too late.

Here's my naive question: Can an OB perform an abortion? I get that many people might not have an OB or feel comfortable with that route. That was my nagging thought this morning. I recall my doctor talking to me about what I would do with genetic testing information during my pregnancy. And I remember a discussion about what my feelings were regarding terminating my pregnancy should genetic testing tell us something negative. None of this ever had to be a serious discussion with real decisions (THANKFULLY!), but if for some reason I would have elected to terminate my pregnancy at that point, would my OB be the person to handle the situation?

I only ask this because would there really only be five places to get abortions in the state, or would procedures still be done in other locations (safely) with an OB and hospital for example.

The thing that really bothers me is when politicians (on both sides really) try to push legistlation through under the guise of misleading intentions. They made it sound like they just simply wanted to protect women. The law was going to require stricter "safety" standards of abortion clinics, require them to upgrade facilities. By itself you could say, oh well that sounds fine! They said, we want women to be safe! But wait a minute... was there an issue with abortion safety in Texas? Were women here dying of shoddy abortions from disreputable clinics???? Answer: No. It is a solution to a non-existent problem. It was just a backdoor way to shut down clinics and make access to abortion impossible for most of the state. This kind of politics makes me so angry. Just say what you mean and then let the people speak/decide on it!

Oh, and go Wendy! (I live in Texas, so this really hit home for me!)

@Bookworm: Yeah. The worst part is that the opposing players in this situation will probably be *rewarded* by their constituents for this childish behavior. Hasn't Perry been in office for like a thousand years? He has to go! I'm surprised he keeps getting reelected considering the horrible things he's done for ALL Texans (like teachers and state employees).

One of my very good friends was at the Capitol all night in the gallery. What an amazing demonstration from Texas citizens. Loved every minute (except for the whole, "We're going to try to change the rules" bit). I especially appreciated Senator Zaffirini pointing out that the rules regarding not leaning on the desk, etc., all state that a Senator must not lean on "his" desk. Of course, we understand that the "he" and "his" refers to all senators, but I thought it was hilarious and made an interesting point.

Other rock star of the day: Senator Leticia Can De Putte. She missed most of the day because she was at her father's funeral. After trying to make a motion before a vote and not being recognized, she asked, "At what point must a female senator raise her hand or her voice to be recognized over her male colleagues?” It was awesome and it started the crowd response that ultimately delayed the vote until the clock ran out.
