@snarkybiochemist: Thank you! Makes sense that it's tricky to diagnose when they are so young!

@periwinklebee: good luck asthma can be scary but managed. It might be hard to get a definitive diagnosis this young, E's pediatrician said that before 2 many illnesses can cause wheezing and thus need nebulizer treatments.

@periwinklebee: Are you using a nebulizer or inhaler and is it albuterol or xopenex (levalbuterol)? I personally have found I have fewer side effects with xopenex and it might be worth the switch. They are different isomers of the same complex
ETA I would also recommend a pulmonlogist ( I know your son has allergies often docs are pulm/allergy) as they know the lungs really well.

@periwinklebee: we experienced A LOT of wheezing and insane coughing when DS was younger. They tried having us do the albuterol puffer when he was having an episode but it never worked. His doctor gave us an orange puffer (I forget what it was!) that we used 2x daily for maintenance and the albuterol as needed. That seemed to help as he had a constant dose instead of just when he was sick. We didn’t deal with the throwing up stuff you mentioned but maybe there’s another option like that? This was when he was like 18 months to age 3 and now he doesn’t need either so fingers crossed for you! It didn’t turn out to be asthma just a lot of strain from colds and pneumonia, RSV, etc.

@bhbee: Thank you! Yeah, we got fairly minimal guidance from the ped. Just to try it if we notice he's wheezing and if it works that means he has asthma. I need to learn more. If he does end up needing it, hopefully the puking in response will not be a regular thing...

@periwinklebee: ugh that is rough if practically everything makes him sick!! Generally inhalers work best when you stay ahead of it, so I’d usually advise trying to do it regularly when sick, but sounds more complicated for you. If you have an allergist I’d definitely talk to them about it.

@MrsADS: I'm sorry. This has been us. Last week LO had a fever again Thursday/Friday, after having been out of daycare most of the past two weeks for the flu and a stomach virus. Fortunately this time it seems to be just an icky cold, knock on wood. I really hope this will just be a cold and not lead to anything else.

@gotkimchi: @bhbee: Thank you! He has some viral crud now with a faucet nose and bad cough. I tried giving the albuterol to him yesterday because we'd gone outside and he was really, really coughing when we came back in. Maybe it helped the cough but he promptly puked about 15 minutes later. Looked it up and vomiting is a side effect. He also pukes in response to fever reducers, antibiotics, and a steroid dose he got when he had croup. Ugh... I hope it's not something he ends up needing regularly...but he has food allergies and eczema so there's a good chance he has asthma too...

@periwinklebee: agree with @gotkimchi: - cough is our primary asthma symptom these days (though he’s done plenty of wheezing in his day also since his was pretty bad) and his allergist has us use albuterol proactively any time he is coughing (viruses are his primary trigger so it all goes hand in hand). It might help! Certainly it helps us with sleeping and overall level of misery.

@JJ2626: I can't remember if I mentioned above... that my LO has basically had a cough since October. I was concerned about walking pneumonia. They told me it was probably asthma since we have a family history and prescribed an inhaler, but since he hasn't wheezed I haven't used it, and think it could just as well be that he basically never goes more than three weeks without getting some sort of cold :meh: Really hope your LO feels better soon.

@JJ2626: I use my mama instinct. If he seems lethargic, fever isn't going away or is really high, the cough sounds weird.

I've had the fever disappear for the window we went to the doctor and the doctor be like "he's fine, what's the problem" and had it be 104 when we were in the doctor's office and been diagnosed with flu. I think they are used to kids not really needing to be seen, so if you have a concern you should go ahead and go in.

@JJ2626: yeah, I've noticed as my husband and I have got the same things from LO that DH will often have a fever of like 102 and mine never gets above 99-100 low grade. Maybe the other kids in LO's class are sick with the same thing, but just he gets sent home with fever and they don't.

@periwinklebee: you're not doing anything wrong! It just sucks. We are in the same boat! LO now seems to have another cold even though the cough from the last one never went away (going on a month!) I may take her to the doctor just to put my mind at ease since the cough makes me nervous. I do think some babies (and adults) are more likely to get fevers with viruses which sounds like your LO so then it makes everything worse especially with daycare. Good luck!

OMG, YES!
I am getting over a stomach bug that sent me to the hospital for fluids due to dehydration and low potassium. My DD and I started with it at the same time. At current, DS has it and DH is getting over it. It has been horrid ... so much "ick" coming from every end from an entire family. I'm exhausted. Being a caretaker (while sick) is so draining!
As for the entirety of the season, DD is ill atleast once a month (colds, allergies, gastrointestinal issues ... you name it) and DS has had a cold and 2 stomach bugs. I am soooooooo tired of illness and can't wait for the season to end!

@misolee: Relay sickness sounds awful. We love our daycare so so much, but may ultimately have to find another care arrangement if we have another kid, because I could not miss any more work than I am now with one LO and still have a job.

Not one kid has been too sick, but with 3 LO's and their relay sickness...it's been a long January. My 3 year old started with a high fever, then my 6 year old, then my 10 month old. So 3 weeks straight. I took the 3 year old to doctor and he tested negative for strep and flu. Didn't take the 6 year old. Only took the 10 month old bc her fever lasted the longest. After all this was over, newly potty trained almost 3 year old got an UTI so back to doctor we went and on antibiotics. He also has his 3 year old check up next week so we will be back at the doctors. Anyways, I joked that they need to make me a parking space

@LemonJack: ugh, yeah, I just feel bad, he is so sad and pathetic when he's sick. He gets sick so often, and his teachers comment on how surprised they are at how long his fevers have lasted and how he is the one who never seems to get a break from getting sent home sick. And he's been in group care for longer than any of the other kids in his class. But maybe just luck of the draw...

Now, DS has another mystery virus, with a temperature that hit 103+ this evening. Fever/malaise is the only symptom I notice. And DH appears to have been struck with another virus. He has had in continual succession the past three weeks the flu, a nasty sinus infection, a stomach bug, a horrible GI reaction to a travel vaccine, and now he's sick again and leaving for a business trip to India tomorrow. And DS will be out of daycare again. Two weeks ago when he got a fever, it lasted for seven days.

I honestly feel like I must be doing something wrong. The other kids in DS's daycare class are sick significantly less than he has been. And it's not like DS has a chronic thing, it just appears to be a string of random fevers and viral illness. We wash hands constantly, I really try to sanitize my house, maybe I don't do a good enough job....I breastfeed which is supposed to help.

@LemonJack: That's awful. I've been worried off and on about pneumonia with DS because he always has a cough that has intensified with the random fevers, but doctor always thought his breathing was fine... I really hope things turn a corner for you.

@Pollywog: I empathize. Work feels like a train wreck now... just telling myself I'll catch up somehow... really hope you avoid the puke bug

And DS woke up with a low grade fever with his cold (that he's had pretty much nonstop since September). I took it about 50 million times and it never went above 99.1 - and he was completely unbothered and behaving normally - so he went to daycare, but I'm just waiting for the call if it goes up (their cutoff is 100.4).

@wrkbrk: @YogiRunner: Ugh yuck. I also can't wait til DS is old enough to be entertained a bit better independently when I'm feeling awful.

Yes. Feels nonstop. Both kids have coughs and faucet noses, and DH and I have a nasty virus that just so happens to involve booting at random times during the day 🤢 No survival tips except being okay with letting the kids play solo while you lie and the couch and moan... and I wish my family was closer to help! Although I feel bad for anyone who dares step foot in this house right now...

This is a major reason why I use a nanny instead of daycare. It is more expensive but it is worth it to have a more consistent work schedule. Ramping back after maternity leave is already complicated enough.

My son started part time daycare at age 20mo and was largely healthy even then. Maybe we were just lucky but based on that experience I really put limited stock in the theory that you will get slammed eventually no matter what age you start group care. But even if it’s true I would rather deal with it later instead of at the same time that I am adjusting to being back at work.

Disclaimer: I totally get and respect that daycare works better for many people for many reasons. But this is my approach to managing the issue raised by OP.

Yep. Since November ..... All 3 of us have had the stomach flu and DS has at least four colds with mild fevers that kept him out of daycare 1-2 days.
