My son didn't say any actual words until he turned two, not even "mama". He communicated well nonverbally, but I was worried. Right after he turned two he started saying "school bus" (pronuounced "boo bus") and it was a landslide after that. By 2 and a half he was totally caught up, and now at a little over 3 he continues to talk A LOT. :)

My brother was a late talker. He didn't start talking until like 2nd or 3rd grade! He understood everything you said to him, and would respond via actions (like if you told him to pick up his shoes, he would), but just never verbally responded. He's perfectly fine now and won't shut up! lol

Hubby's nephew was also a late talker. I think he was close to 3 or 4 before he really started talking. He is a super brilliant kid though. By the age of 2, he could put puzzles together like the 50 US states, point out items when you asked where they were, and by the time he was 3, he was putting together mini lego sets like a boss!

My first didn't really talk (other than to sign) until she was 2 - by 2.5 she was able to string a few words together. She's 7 now and won't be quiet ... like, ever.
We had her assessed around 18 months and they weren't that concerned, but we kept seeing a speech therapist for about a year. I think that because she could sign she wasn't stressed out about not being able to communicate, which helped.
I think some kids just talk later than others.

my younger sisters weren't talking until 2. at 18 months my mum says they had 5 words, and one of those "words" was blowing a raspberry, which apparently meant "that is different". they're fine now, both graduated from college :)

I wouldn't consider 15 months late. DS only had a few words at that point too but definitely understood everything and could follow directions. Around 18 months was his real language explosion.

My LO is 19 months old and is also a late talker. She's actually starting to say a few more words and she babbles nonstop. At our last appointment, our ped was not too worried just because LO understood everything she said. She was able to follow all of the ped's directions, as well as being able to point out all the correct objects when the dr gave her a word. For us, the dr said it may just be because we've lived in 2 different countries, and currently, our housekeeper only speaks Mandarin to LO, whereas, DH and I speak to her in english. Also, the dr told us to just repeat our words to her and not to give her what she is asking for unless she attempts to say the word.

My son didnt start really speaking until he was 2.5. He was the same as your LO - understood everything but just refuses to speak. He's now learning a second language as well and doing very well. Some kids are just late talkers. We did do early intervention for a year.

My niece just turned 2. She wasn't saying anything (not even babbles) at 18 months and my sister got her assessed. They found that she was perfectly fine...my sister had been responding so perfectly to her gestures and nonverbal cues that my niece had no reason to talk! She's now 2 and talking up a storm. :)

Ellie was! And she has a fantastic vocabulary and is very well-spoken. At your daughter's age she only said 'mama' and 'bup' for 'up.' It is hard not to look around and think that something is wrong (or at the very least to be a little disappointed at the lack of speech), but try to keep it in context and in perspective. And, if you are really worried, get another opinion. When Ellie started talking more she REALLY started talking more. She went from a handful of discrete words to complete sentences. It was really fun to watch her be able to communicate so much better in such a short span of time (I would say from when she was two-2.5). She went from being noticably behind to being one of the most eloquent children in her age group.

I was totaling up M's words the other day and was impressed at how few it was. She understand and follows dire ruins and is adding about a word every day or every other day.

LO wasn't a super early talker, the pediatrician wasn't concerned and she understood a lot of words and sentences in two languages. A lot of the little kids around her also weren't big talkers soon after they turned 1. LO turned 2 recently and we've been waiting for this 'language explosion' and it just never happened, it was super slow and steady expression of more words instead. But just in the last couple weeks she's really taken off and talks in a lot more complex sentences and a lot more frequently than she used to and even says her name (which sounds less impressive than sentences but the girl absolutely refused to say her name). And so far her friends have been the same way, that they've really made huge leaps after they turned 2. If your pediatrician isn't worried your LO is probably on the right track.

i know many, many late talkers that turned out to be fine. most of them had no words at 18 months.

i wouldn't worry just yet esp since she understands and can point to things. language acquisition is about way more than verbal expression.

It's making me a bit worried and frustrated that I keep seeing so many other kids picking up lots of words and talking up a storm after their 1st birthdays. My daughter is still barely saying any words. At 15 months she really only clearly says "uh oh", "nuh" (no), and "yeah". Sometimes I can't even tell if she's saying yes or no b/c they sound so similar when she says them. Every few days she seems to pick up a new word, but by two days later she isn't saying it anymore. The doctor isn't worried at all b/c her language acquisition otherwise is great. She can point to pictures of all kinds of words when I say them. She knows lots of animals, cars, trucks, flowers, butterflies, shoes, body parts, etc. She just won't say the words.

I wish she would try to say the words for herself, but I guess I probably just have to be patient. Does anyone else have stories of late talkers who turned out to be ok in the end?
