@GreenThumb: our coop was on the property, so we didn't do either. I've seen some at Tractor Supply and I want to say Sam's, maybe Costco, that look ideal for three birds. My husband built a few small runs for when we had meat birds that were simple pvc frames with chicken wire that used an old igloo dog house for shelter. Chickens are really easy, in my opinion. Good luck!

@Mrs. Polish: @Boheme: Just wanted to check in about your backyard chickens! We are pretty serious about getting 3 hens in the late spring and are in the planning stages for their coop/run. Did you build or buy your coops? Do you have any suggestions for someone starting out in terms of design that you like or don't like? Any other thoughts? More cute pictures? TX!

@swurlygurl: not all of ours will go out in the snow, but some don't mind. The main concern is frostbite on their combs and feet. Our coop isn't heated though and they stay warm. We're in northern Indiana with pretty cold winters.

@swurlygurl: There are breeds that handle cold weather better - heavier built, smaller combs etc. - that you could look into. A lot of people also pick up small heating units that are meant for chicken coops. As long as they can get to the warmth, I'm sure they'd be fine :)

Does anyone who has chickens have bad winter weather? What do you do with them when it snows, etc? Can they survive outside in the snow?
That alone might be enough to get me to stop bugging DH... but people here DO have chickens, so it must be doable?

@littlek: I've been researching some methods to keep them safe. We are burying some wire down a bit around the foundation of the coop, and are using hardware cloth fencing rather than hex wire for their run. I think we're going to build their enclosed run to be pretty large, and just let them free range during the day when someone is outside. I also found a predator light for nighttime that our local chicken folks swear by. Predators are what I'm the most nervous about! We are keeping them in their brooder in our garage until they're 8 weeks old.

We are planning on getting a few chickens later this year - we just have to build a run with a roof (otherwise the chickens would be toast). I am clueless about raising chickens though! If anyone knows a great introductory book, I'd love a recommendation!

@Mrs. Polish: Thanks, they are bantam's, a Frizzle and a Silky! I didn't get to pick them out per say, but they are both very lovely, the Silky is al little more personable, but maybe she was handled more as a baby, not sure. And thanks for the tips!

@Seattlemom: we're keeping our chicks separated from our 1yo chickens until they're full grown. We introduced some full sized ones to our flock and it was a rough 30 min or so between the two groups. Everyone was fine in the end, but I'd definitely wait until they're big enough to defend themselves. Don't let that stop you from adding to your flock!

Take a tin can, and fill it with big straws, like slurpee straws or small hose, and lay it on its side, out of the sun, somewhere with shelter.

@Seattlemom: I would definitely be cautious introducing new chicks; chickens can be VERY nasty to each other, which is how my mom ended up the adoptive mom of a blind chicken literally being pecked to death by the other chickens because she was the weakest one.

Our HOA bars chickens, which is too bad because I wouldn't mind getting a couple. It's probably for the best though since I wouldn't be good with the handling of the "old chickens" a couple years after you get them!! Too soft hearted!!

@Mrs. Polish: No, we bought the coop from someone on craigslist and she convinced us to take her 2 bantam chickens too. We had wanted to get a bunch of chicks to raise together. Now I'm too whimpy to try to introduce new chickens to the flock.
