What @Beebug said... IPS is covered by OHIP. We had it done at 12 weeks and it included b/w (sent to CHEO) and an US. But it does not tell you gender... You can/will find that out at your 20 week US.

Our doctor brought up the IPS at our first prenatal appointment because some couples want to take time to think about whether they want it or not.

@pui: I would definitely wait to see your doc next! I am in Ontario too, and both pregnancies had the IPS/NT screening done (for down's, trisonomies, etc) at 12w. Involved bloodwork x2, and 1 u/s, all covered by OHIP. It is optional, the test results were obviously important, but it was great to see baby, too :)

@spaniellove: Honestly, I don't know my options at all! I don't even know what most of the tests available are, I'll definitely have to start researching. I'll probably bring this up with my doctor next time I see him.

I think I've been told as well that Down Syndrome is not the type of thing that runs in the family, and at your age your risk would be pretty low. My OB told me that my insurance would cover it without any additional risk, just not two types of testing, so that may be how she got it covered! Do you know what kind of testing is covered? I got the traditional tests (sequential screening) and an elective gender scan and although I was a little jealous knowing other moms were finding out a bit earlier than me, you'll still get your moment. Do you have any options for getting elective scans where you live?

@Beebug: I don't know, we haven't really discussed it and our doctor has only brought up the Panorama test so far. We'll probably talk about it at my next appointment in a few weeks.

@pui: Time will fly, I promise!! We are 22w already and I feel like bfp was yesterday! 20w u/s will be here before you know it :) Will you do the IPS/NT testing/us?

Hm I didn't know that? I guess that might explain why SIL's was covered, since she's the mother and it's her family with the history!!

Eh it's looking like we're just going to pass on the test. :) Only thing that sucks is now I won't even get another ultrasound until 20 weeks!!

I'm not sure about this, but I don't think Down's is considered a "family history" type disease. Or if it is, it would be on the mother's side since it is caused by having older eggs. Like I said, I'm not confident in this fact, but thats at least my understanding of it.

I was told I can't even get that test unless I'm 35+ or have strong family history in something.

I have a health spending account with my employer benefits and I wondered if that would cover it, but never looked into it!

I was tempted, but couldn't look beyond the $900 no matter who was paying for it, and so we passed!

I feel like I heard something about being 35+ and there being partial coverage? I could be mixing things up though.

@mrswin: We are our own employers and we have no additional coverage.

I'll probably ask our clinic whether or not there are any circumstances in which this test could be partially covered, but I also wanted to see if any other bees had any experience! :)

@pui: I have no experience since I don't have a LO yet but could you ask your OB if it would be covered since there is some family history on your DH's side? They should be able to inquire with OHIP to find out. Also if you have private insurance through your employers maybe it would be covered there, worth phoning and asking at least.

At first DH and I declined doing the Panorama genetic testing because of the price. However now I am having second thoughts. SIL had it done and now already knows the gender of her baby (she's 12 weeks)! I really want to know if we're having a boy or a girl!! It would also be nice to know for sure that baby is healthy and everything especially since there is some history of down's syndrome in DH's family.

The thing is, while the test was covered under SIL's insurance in the States, in Canada it is not covered and costs a steep $900. We already spent over $900 on Crinone so my DH doesn't want to spend any more money (understandably).

If you are in Canada and got this test, did you pay out of pocket for it? Is there any circumstances in which Health Canada will cover some or all of this test? Or are we out of luck?

Even if you're not in Canada and got this test (or a similar one) done, are you happy you did it? Do you think it's worth an extra 900 bucks?
