Bump! I was about 20lbs overweight when we got pregnant after a year, and a HSG. The RE said I was borderline PCOS, and had weak ovulation. I couldn't help but wonder if it was from being overweight. I told my midwife we may want a second in the next 2 years, and she advised I lose 20lbs. When I saw another practioner for a check up on my IUD, she advised the same thing. She also said she would treat me as if I did have the PCOS and prescribe metroformin if not pregnant by 6 months. Some days I think maybe I can do this again, but would like to lose a good 40lbs.

thanks that what i was hoping. I know its in my best interest to get back in the gym I just didnt want it to screw my cycle up. I'm gonna try to get back into cardio kickboxing, spinning and the elliptical. I also have no clue how i should modify my work outs once i get pregnant but thats another discussion.

@Chillybear: It takes pretty extreme exercise to mess up ovulation. I recently read somewhere that the first sign of issue will be that your LP gets shorter rather than ovulation stopping immediately.

Has anyone experienced a delay in ovulation after starting an exercise program? We are currently TTC and i'm at CD5 I want to get back in the gym (I havent gone regularly in 3-4 months) but i'm afraid its going to throw my whole cycle off. I'd be really thrilled to get KU any time now but in the mean time i could def stand to drop 20-25lbs while we're working on that.

@MRS. LEMON-LIME: you should definitely!!! getting comfortable with 3 miles is the hardest part, but after you do, running is a lot more fun!!! Plus if you sign up for races, your mind starts focusing on training for the race instead of calorie burning as the goal, which helps too :)

I let 10lbs creep up during a busy fall. We have only been TTC the last few months, but this week started my diet to try to lose 10lbs to hopefully be healthier and help with TTC.

But I am definitely one of those people who would rather exercise than diet (i like food way too much!) when I do diet, I used myfitnesspal app, and try to eat less repackaged meals, more veggies. as my username suggests, running is my fave way. I lost 30lbs about 2 years ago when I first started running, when you are new to running it REALLY can boost weight loss. If you need any specific advise always willing offer tips that help me!

Sadly I gained 15 lbs after our mc so now I'm even heavier than I was the first time we TTC. We just started to TTC again and we are just trying to make better lifestyle choices (exercising regularly, not eating crap) and if weightloss comes with them then great.

I reeeeeally want to lose weight before I get pregnant. After a year of TTC I'm finally getting on it!!! I have had a BMI of 22-24 my whole life then after the wedding BAM 15 lbs. So I've joined My Fitness Pal (anyone wanna be my buddy?!?) and I work out using Zumba Fitness or Dance Central (SO FUN!!! Great way to work out if you aren't one who wants to exercise!!!!!!) every day. I'm 8.5 lbs down, still have *ahem* 48 to go. My goal is to get to a BMI of 20 which for me is about 125-135. So that will take like six months...obviously I hope I'm KU by then but I'm switching gears to focusing mostly on weight loss/getting in shape while we are saving up for more expensive fertility treatments.

I had a goal of losing about 50 lbs, but I've heard that even a few can be really beneficial. All in all, I lost 20 lbs before I got my BFP, and with a BMI of 30, I'm recommended to only gain 11-20 lbs during pregnancy.

It's encouraging to read all your stories! I have gained about 50 pounds in the past two years, sadly. I don't think I need to be that skinny again, but I need to lose 25 pounds to get back within the "Normal Weight" BMI range. I really want to do this before we TTC!

@mrs. bird: my starting BMI was 31%, overweight borderline obese. I started bootcamp over the summer, but didn't change what I ate- fast food, takeout. So far down only 4 pounds. I am now just fully committing to eating right and giving 100% when I am at bootcamp (4x/wk) . Even with baby fever as a constant motivation this is sooo hard. My husband, thankfully, wants to clean up his diet too, which makes the food part a bit easier. He thinks I can drop the weight in 5 months. Based on the feedback five months seems reasonable. I implemented some of the tips listed here and fingers crossed I make them into habbits that will work for me as well.

I asked my dr about losing weight & if she thought it would help us conceive, she said ten pounds might help, but that we'd know within ten pounds if it was a factor. So you'd think I'd lose ten pounds since it's not a substantial amount & I'm a former over achiever at weight loss, but no, I haven't, in fact I put on weight while depressed about TTC. I'm sure for some ppl it has more of an effect than others, even skinny (I got my body fat to 16%, which for a woman who's not naturally athletically inclined was pretty impressive) my cycles weren't normal & now while fat I don't have issues with high blood pressure and my blood sugar has never been high (was on a med that could cause in increase so it was checked more than a few times, it's gone a bit too low but I've never had it high) so while I'm not going to say being overweight is a good thing or that it doesn't increase the odds for complications durning pregnancy, your decision should be based on more than just a number.

Are you healthy? Are you active? Are there ways to make healthier choices? Dont beat yourself up over losing a certain amount, set smaller goals and forgive yourself for slip ups, maybe you didn't make the best choices one day, it's not about one day, it's about each new day making as many good choices as you can. Good choices add up, just like poor choices do! Try making choices you can continue pregnant, a morning & post dinner lap around the block, stop using elevators, drinking big glasses of water before meals. Make yourself a healthy you, wherever that leaves you on the scale. Hugs & good luck! (sorry for the book of a comment!)

I lost 40 pounds in the few years before I got pregnant. I'm glad that I did - it was part of an overall life transformation, and I'm really thrilled that I did it back then. These days I wouldn't have half the time I had then for self improvement. I'd highly recommend trying to schedule any huge life changes prebaby.

lost 24 pounds (not for TTC but because I was in the overweight BMI and had disordered eating)... took me 2 years. I only needed to lose 10 and the last 14 were for vanity (healthy range is pretty big!)
I am really glad I lost them! I am still a few pounds up since being pregnant but I think it was easier on my joints starting lower--I gained a lot while pregnant and my knees felt it.

I didn't lose weight before TTC, but an acquaintance lost about 40lbs and told me about the MyFitnessPal app for the phone (and online). I like how you can track all your food intake and exercise. I don't use it religiously or to lose weight, but anytime I felt like my weight was creeping up a bit, I would track every little thing on the app for a few days and it really helped spotlight any issues and keep me focused on calorie intake!
I liked this app more than others for the wide variety of food entries already in the database. Good luck!

Yes, I lost 45lbs and it took about a year. I started cooking more meals, kept a food journal, and weighed myself daily. I also did monthly "will power challenges" where I gave up bread, sugar, caffeine, etc for a month at a time. It helped me learn how to curb my cravings. When we ttc I got pregnant the first try.

Yes, I lost almost 30 pounds before getting pregnant. I was still overweight when we got our BFP, but I was happy that I didn't start gaining baby weight on top of my original weight! I didn't follow a special diet or exercise regimen, I just kept track of what I was eating/counted calories, and starting walking around my neighborhood almost daily. Just be sure that when you do get your BFP and start gaining weight "back," you don't let it bother you! That's good weight ;)

I lost 12 lbs prior to getting pregnant. I was only 130 to begin with, but I wanted to be healthier so I started working out using the Insanity program 6 days a week, making sure I was eating right by doings lots of small meals with the right amount of calories and protein. I only drank tea and water for the most part, and instead of getting fries at fast food restaurants I would get a small chicken nuggets or something since it was less calories and had protein. At sit down places I would get a side of veggies.

I wasn't advised by my doctor to lose weight, but i did lose weight prior to pregnancy. I had gained 12 pounds with my first pregnancy when i miscarried, and was determined to get my body back before trying again. I was working out 7x a week by running, spinning, and going to yoga. I also watched what i ate. It took me 2 months to lose about 14 pounds, but mind you, i was on the thin side so the weight was harder to lose.

Sorry, i don't know if it really helps. I would definitely look into your eating habits/diet as it's much faster to lose weight by changing your diet than it is through exercise.

I lost a little (like...8 lbs or so during the year beforehand). I am not a dieter and I hate working out, but I tried to eat more fruits and veggies, drink less soda/more water, watch portion size and be active by going on walks, getting up and moving around, etc. Easy lifestyle changes like that should help lose some weight (also cutting out fast food!).

*ETA* I wasn't advised to lose weight, just wanted more room in my jeans. I do think that being more active before pregnancy will help you stay fit during it--I'm 32 weeks and still able to go on long walks up steep hills, and the extra weight in my tummy has toned my legs and butt nicely. ;)
