My SIL doesn't! she lives in a 1 bedroom in NYC. She just put a crib in her room. Her son does not seem traumatized :)

We had three bedrooms when our son was born and we were also renting. One bedroom was our master, the small bedroom by the entry was our walk in closet/storage room and the other bedroom was an office/guest room.

At first, we just kind of rearranged the furniture in the room to accomodate a crib, armoire and chair. Eventually, though, we realized we had to move out the office component because we couldn't use it when we needed to. So, we moved the desk into a nook in our entry way and it functioned perfectly for us.

We didn't do the fully decked out room either, but I have since done that for my son's big boy room in our new house.

LO was a surprise baby blessed to us after 5+ years of TTC so we hauled ass to renovate both bathrooms and declutter. We ran out of time and energy to turn our office/spare bedroom into a nursery. We just have a crib, book shelf, cube shelves, and dresser in there without a theme. I plan on putting lots of thought and love into her toddler big girl bedroom though.

We compromised and made our rooms fit a combination of needs. The baby room is half office and crafting area. Our toddler's room is half guest room too. Really we only use those rooms for sleep for the most part and spend most of our time in the living room.

@Mrs. Tea: glad to hear good things about the IKEA crib! @gingerbebe: we got a Sniglair crib from there last weekend-so we're on the same wavelength. We'd rather have a good stroller, too!

@Mrs. Tea: our master and our second bedroom are the exact same size and layout! Not too big. We will have to have a bassinet or a tiny crib! But if we have the same issue of baby not sleeping in our room, we can easily move him/her over. It just will always be a multi-purpose room whether baby's sleeping there or not!

@gingerbebe: I am sure that part of my motivation is the hassle, or our inability, to change things in a rental! It's just too much work.

@honeybear: thanks for sharing! It's good to reminded that the baby will survive and thrive (and still take over our lives) without a dedicated, decorated room.

We haven't had a new addition yet, but we are planning for one! We have two extra bedrooms but I plan on keeping the baby in our room for at least the first few months so I plan on adaption the master and then later on we will transform a bedroom into a room for baby.

We were in a one-bedroom when I got pregnant, and we lived there until DD was 9.5 months old. It can definitely be done, and you'll have the luxury of more storage at least! I had to give up half of my closet! I do think once s/he gets more mobile, you'll want a dedicated play space, but that doesn't have to be a nursery of course.

Yes!! I mean, I bought a matching set of furniture and art work but...I really don't want to paint all of the bedrooms until the kids are older and can choose their own look to their bedrooms.

My poor, deprived* child, who is now 3, never had a dedicated nursery. (My husband contends that our entire 2BR apartment is actually a nursery because he finds Legos and balls and random vehicles strewn about his office (the second bedroom) regularly. :) )

When LO was born we had a 1BR, so a nursery wasn't an option. In any event, LO never liked the idea of sleeping apart from us and we didn't mind him sleeping in our room/bed, so that's where he started sleeping and that's where he still sleeps. We're hoping to buy a house soon and he'll get his own room. As a practical matter, that will probably just mean that I get to move his clothes out of my closet and most of his toys out of the living room!

As a matter of logistics, I think you should have a dedicated storage space for the baby's stuff, but it sounds like you're planning for that, so I think you're probably good to go!

*Sarcasm. ;)

We have a 3 bedroom with DS in one and the third bedroom is just how you described. It's a craft room and office with LO's clothes and other stuff in there. But he'll sleep in our room. We plan to move soon so then he'll have his own room. I'm not dealing with it in this rental.

We're renting a 2 bedroom place, LO has all her stuff in there but we're not allowed to hang anything or paint so nothing special has been done! One day when we buy a house I plan to give lo a specially designed room! But she only sleeps in there at the moment so no need for big decoration anyway!

I didn't/ don't have one. LO is in a stokke crib next to our bed. It works out really well! We are actually moving to a two bed and she will still share our room... as long as I am nursing (she is 8 mos.). The spare room will be our office!

I just posted about our nursery yesterday!

We have a two bedroom home and honestly we never used that room for anything other then collecting junk before it became a nursery.

I think you can totally pull off not having a "nursery" if you have a biggish master bedroom ( Ours is TEENY TINY) and your plan is to cosleep or have them sleep in your room for the forseeable future.

Norah started off in our room in a bassinet and I did not sleep a wink. After a week, she was in her crib in her room. That being said I am sure I would have adjusted eventually if that is where her crib was.

All of this to say, do what you are comfortable with. A fancy nursery is certainly not needed especially if it is not something you want.

@gingerbebe: I love our ikea crib :) I spent more money on the stroller and I am so glad I did because I walk everywhere with her.

@LatteLove: Oh thank God I'm not the only one. We live in a rental too and our master is huge but the other two rooms are tiny. DH uses one as an office (non-negotiable) and the other room we turned into TV room for kids who come over for our family Bible Study on Friday nights and we don't want to lose that space for them. So I think we're just going to stick a crib and our recliner in the corner and call it good. Its so freeing to think about because I'm a total psycho when I decide to do something. If we owned a house I would probably go nuts on a nursery, but here its like why bother.

I do have my eye on a Babyletto crib that's not too bad (around $300) but part of me just wants to grab a $100 Ikea crib and call it a day. We'll use DH's long dresser as a changing table and he has a bed in his office one of us can crash in if we need the sleep.

I figure all that nursery savings will help while I'm on maternity leave making 50% pay or just give me more money to blow on other stuff (like a really great stroller or diaper bag!) DH jokes we're just going to stick the kid in a drawer.

We were/are theoretically going to turn our guest room into a nursery, but we don't know what to do with the queen bed in there, or where our guests would sleep. Plus, we co-bed so all of the baby's stuff is in our room, plus this winter has been so cold that we've actually closed off that room. We aren't sure about buying a crib...long story short, our baby is 8 months old and no nursery! He'll have his room in the next year or so, I imagine.

We started off with a crib in our room and by 6 months were full time bedsharing. Now at 16 months, LO still doesn't have a room of her own. She sleeps with us, we had a changing station in the bathroom and we just play in the living room.

We'll worry about setting her up with a room once she's ready to sleep on her own. Works for us :)

We currently rent a two bedroom house that we adore and we're hoping to stay put for 3+ years. Our second bedroom functions as an office, guest room and storage so we really don't have the luxury of making it a baby's room.

The more I'm thinking about it, the more I'm planning to not decorate a nursery. We will maybe have a baby station in the second bedroom (small dresser and gear in the corner) with a crib in our bedroom, and we have built in desks in both rooms, so one of those will become a changing station. But we won't really do anything for theme or decor.

It feels really freeing to not have the pressure of transforming our one extra room. I know a newborn won't know the difference of gray and pink elephants on the wall or not! But I also feel a tiny bit guilt about not spending the time and energy on making a special place for our new arrival. We just have to be practical!

I don't know anyone who hasn't made a nursery! So I'm curious for those of you limited on space - what have you done to make room for a new addition?
