I was between 190-195 when I got pregnant (I think I was closer to 195) and I'm only 5'3". My OB told me that I should try to only gain 15-20 lbs overall. I'll be 36 weeks tomorrow and I'm at 217 (seeing the scale tip over 200 was NOT a pleasant day, even though it was only 5 lbs over my pre-pregnancy weight).

I lost about 8 lbs during my 1st trimester because I didn't have much of an appetite (no M/S, just no desire to eat much) and I've been maintaining my weight around 215-217 for the past 3 weeks or so. I'm hoping to stay under 220 overall.

Yep, but not by a lot. And I never looked it...I'm apparently built very densely. Probably all in my butt and thighs, because my waist has always been small and I didn't really have boobs.

My midwife never actually gave me an ideal weight gain number, she takes the philosophy of "as long as you're eating healthy, staying active, and putting it on slow and steady, boxing you into a specific parameter of pounds is only going to make you crazy."

I lost about 12 lbs in the first trimester, and at my 29 week visit had finally gotten back up to my pre-pregnancy weight. I'll see what it is officially at my appointment tomorrow, but my home-scale has me back down by a few, despite my increased veg-on-the-couchiness.

I have had a plan to lose the 15 pounds that crept up after the wedding before TTC, but so far haven't actually done anything to make that happen. My mom and sister both had really bad morning sickness, so I'm almost hoping for that and that it will make me lose weight in the beginning (don't remind me that I said that if I DO get bad morning sickness!). I'm focusing more on exercising than diet now, though, since I think that will help more with a pregnancy than being my ideal weight. Right?

@His Barista: me too! i refuse to play wii because it gives me a frowny face and tells me i'm obese! haha

i've been hanging out between 175 and 180 for the past couple years. in january i told myself i was going to lose 30 pounds before i got pregnant. that didn't happen. i don't feel incredibly unhealthy, but i'm super nervous to go to my first doctor's appointment... i really don't want a lecture.

I gained weight before I got pregnant as well, it just seemed to pile on even though I wasn't do anything different. My doctor's weren't too concerned and still kept me at the 25-30 lbs weight gain for pregnancy. However, now I am even more deteremined post baby to lose all the weight gained + those 10 extra pounds I gained before getting pregnant. I'm trying tot not stress about the weight and do whatever makes me feel the best in my pregnancy. Fruit has been my best friend though to help curve my sweet cravings.

@zippylef: I'm relieved to hear that I'm not the only one gaining way more where the weigh more = gain less philosophy did not hold true. And kudos to you for losing it all so quickly! I hope to follow suit!

I have always been considered obese for my height. I think its stupid. Haha.
While I was pregnant I ate pretty much the same. I gained 25 pounds. I usually couldn't eat as much when I was starving because everything gave me heartburn.

Sometimes it works out really well. I dropped 15 pounds in the first trimester, gained it back in the second, and by the end of march had found another six pounds to pack on as well. I kept forgetting to get weighed after that, and the babies were born on the 14th of may. I just got weighed a week ago, and I'm now 38 pounds lighter than I was in September, when I went to the doctor to confirm that I was pregnant, and about five weeks along.
I didn't consciously do specific things to minimise weight gain during pregnancy. My appetite was so crap in the first tri I just didn't want to eat much. It recovered in the second, but things I liked before pregnancy - fries, for example- no longer appealed. I still don't care for them now. I drank huge amounts of milk in second tri, then yogurt was the thing in the final tri.
I didn't exercise much more than pre-pregnancy: I still went swimming once a week or so, but found my lengths getting slower and slower as my bump got bigger.
Now I'm in the unusual position (for me, anyway) of trying to hold on to my weight loss and not backslide- my appetite is a lot better now, and I find I want chocolate a lot. I'm breast feeding and formula feeding, and hopefully it's helping burn some calories- obviously it would burn plenty if I was ebf, but I think I'd go insane, to be honest.

Sorry for the essay, but I just wanted to insert a happy outcome! I am still overweight, and was quite heavy pre pregnancy, and obviously didn't need to gain much weight to sustain the babies, but I had hoped I might finish up somewhere near my starting point, I never thought I'd undercut it by so much. When my jelly belly begins to shrink more I'll look forward to buying new clothes!

I was the heaviest I've ever been before I got pregnant. I wasn't huge and only a size 12 but they still considered me overweight. The theory of starting out bigger=gaining less weight didn't hold true for me. I gained 50-60lbs. LO is 9 weeks and I've lost pretty much all of it already though. :)

I was significantly overweight, and my doctor, diabetes nurse, and nutritionist all agreed that I could go the pregnancy without gaining weight. The idea is that the weight that I lose by eating right and being healthy will balance out the weight gained for baby. So far I've lost about 5 pounds and regained 1, so I'm down 4. I'm 10w3d.

I have this theory that the bigger you are the less you gain weight. Well to a certain extent. I gained 29 lbs with my first pregnancy and stared at 185 lbs.

When I got pregnant the second time around I was 190 (still had 5 lbs to lose) but only gained 12 lbs that time. Baby was taking my stored fat!!! Hallelujah.

Now I'm smaller then when I got pregnant with my first and I'm only 3 weeks postpartum.

@highwire: Agreed - seems like there's not much out there for those of us who aren't obese, but aren't close to ideal either.

I was overweight before pregnancy. My doctor told me I could only gain 10-15 lbs. I'm 22 weeks and and I've lost 15 lbs. The first couple of weeks I maintained my weight, but then I started losing. It was mostly because I just couldn't eat as much, not because of nausea.
I am waiting for the other shoe to drop and the weight to start piling on, but so far so good. I think if you're eating healthy and trying to get walks in, you'll be fine!

I started out overweight, obese technically. and I did really well with managing my weight in the beginning, but it really went on a landslide during my second trimester. I had horrible nausea and food aversions and was too tired to cook so we ate out a lot. Once I started feeling better and got more help from DH with cooking (we grill mostly) it slowed way down, thank god! But I've gained WAY more weight than I wanted to. I am also so swelled that I can feel it in my fingers and toes and you can see it in my feet/ankles. My doctors have been really good and supportive. They know I've always struggled with my weight and we talk about what I'm eating, how much, and the fact that I'm still exercising (last few weeks have slowed down but I was doing spin and boot camp until I hit the 3rd trimester). I'm not thrilled about it, but trying not to beat myself up either. My doctor has told me that everything is perfect and where it should be - other than my weight.

I'm around there too, and while I'm working on losing post-wedding weight, hopefully I will get pregnant soon and be in the same position as you ladies. I know I'll have to be extra careful about my weight gain, but like @highwire: said when I google, all the info seems to be aimed at regular or obese women. What about us girls that are just fluffy?!?

I had gained about 10 lbs right before I got pregnant because we had moved so we were eating out more when we first got here and I haven't worked since moving so I've been more sedentary. I was already bordering on overweight and that 10 extra pounds put me in the overweight category definitely. My doctor told me she wanted me to gain a max of 25 lbs. I'll probably hit between 30-35 but she hasn't said anything to me yet so I'm assuming she's not concerned.

I gained about a pound every four weeks up until about 20 weeks and then I gained a lot pretty quickly until about 28 weeks and now I'm at a more steady pace of 2-3 lbs between my two week appointments.

Started at the exact same weight as you when I got pregnant. At my 12 week appointment I hadn't gained any weight. I have another on Monday, when I'll be 16 weeks, I'm hoping I haven't gone up too much at that point either. Doctor only wants me to gain 15-20 total. I feel like there is a lot of info out there for normal weight pregnancies and obese pregnancies, but not a lot of just mildly overweight pregnancies.

I also gained a lot of weight before I got pregnant. Well actually I gained it because I got pregnant, and then I miscarried, so I was holding onto that baby weight still. And I was having issues because I weaned off my migraine meds and that caused me to gain, and exercise triggers migraines for me so I just had to sit on my tush the whole time. So yes, I was overweight, and still gained 40 pounds in my pregnancy :( Good luck.... hope you have better self control than I did!

When I got pregnant, I had gained weight post wedding, which put me at an all time high of 180. I was cutting calories when I got pregnant, and now I'm not drinking and pretty much eating the same (except for my new best friend, fat free chocolate frozen yogurt). I'm 8w4d, and I think I've gained about a pound. I know I'm supposed to keep it under 20 total, and that's my goal.

I've been somewhat nauseated in the first tri, but I've unfortunately found that the way to battle it is to eat. Grrr. I can't wait for the second trimester and the supposed "feeling great."

Anyone else facing something similar?
