My kid finally sat on the potty today, diaper off. She's 2.5 and just doesn't care about the potty. Getting there and I think it's gonna go quick but I'm not bothering with the 3 day method. We're gonna ease into it and try to make it as stress free as possible..

I know a lot of boys aren't ready til three, that could be it. I dunno. But I can say it's been a slow start here too!

The 3 day potty training method DID NOT work for us, and was so so stressful! We shelved it and took a slower, more easygoing approach the second time around, and it was so much better. In the end it took us about 2 weeks, but she still has accidents sometimes even now because she is too busy playing... so I have to remind her to go potty.

This is what worked for us - http://www.hellobee.com/2013/07/11/easy-does-it-with-the-potty/

The two biggest things were 1) using the stand alone potty so they could visibly see the "fruits of their labor", and 2) going underwearless at home so she had no crutch at all.

Sounds like your son is getting it!! I think sometimes we just have to let go of our expectations a little. He sounds like he's doing much better than my daughter when she first started.

The three day method would NEVER have worked for my daughter. If it's not working for your kid, don't stress. Just back up and give it a little time, then maybe try more slowly.

We used the potty watch at the beginning and it was really effective! I think it lets the toddler have some agency in deciding to go - it's not because a parent/adult is making him go, but he'll go because the watch reminds him to.

@stargal: no advice but Miss A started potty training in January and we are still having the odd accident now. LO knows how it works but certain times of the day are consistently problematic for us and unfortunately physically putting her on the toilet when she doesn't want to go is just a disaster!

@stargal: I think you have to try to know for sure. At this point, it can't hurt. And the thing is, he has to learn the process, which is why I don't support bribing. Having accidents is part of the process.

@mamaof2: my LO will go in a diaper if she's in one - telling her to keep her diaper dry so she can wear underwear isn't enough incentive to not go in her diaper.

We'll be trying the "just put her in underwear" method, with timed potty breaks, very soon.

@cascademom: yup I already bribe him with a sticker chart for using the potty and candy. lol

@Mamaof2: he will then just use his diaper. he loves his underwear but not enough to use it as an incentive.

I knew the three day method wouldn't work for us, so we did timed intervals. We didn't ask if he had to pee, we just went and there was no reward or bribing.

Things like special underwear have no meaning to my son, they're all the same, so we just use whatever. But it wasn't like some switch came on and now all of a sudden he was trained.

@stargal: I would tell him that when he can stay dry in his diaper he can wear underwear

I don't get the whole "put them in underwear" right away. DS was staying dry and using the potty consistently before we put him in underwear - he had maybe 3 pee accidents ever once in underwear.

@stargal: Could you make an incentive for him to go like bringing a toy in or getting something for going to the potty? Bribery feels like the best working method for just about everything from 2.5 years old on these days. We'll do trades per "Happiest Toddler on the Block." If you go potty, we'll do this. Win win.

@cascademom: yup I try to take him every hour but I admit I sometimes forget and then an accident happens. I just wish he would tell me bc I can ask him if he has to go and he says no and then ten minutes later there is an accident.

@JMOM: It's funny that you mention the plain underwear versus the character ones. My LO had too much of an indecision problem with the character ones. I got him tighty whities for his baptism. They were more special than the characters and look like Daddy's. He doesn't fight putting them on or anything. The plain underwear is more effective with our LO than character.

Do you take him to potty every 30 minutes to start, then push it out an hour from there, then before activities and naps? For us, every 30 minutes in the beginning worked really well. We didn't do the 3 day method. We followed in line with our daycare. I guess it was consistency for us that worked.

Right now, he's getting defiant about potty and needing to go after having months of being okay with it. He's too wrapped up in fun to want to take the time to pee. If he really has to go, he'll tell us. When we say to go before an event, it's more of a struggle. We're keeping the before event thing even more consistent since he's fighting it.

When i potty trained my now 6 year old - it was a complete disaster. She finally got the peeing, but I swear she pooped in her pants for 9 more months. Sooo frustrating.
I just got done training my 3 year old and it was much better. I did follow the system from this book: That's How I Roll by Rachel Poslick Jaques. Basically, you put them in cool underwear and if they pee in it, then you say "Oh, Lightning McQueen doesn't like to be peed on. We have to use the boring, plain underwear." If they poop in the underwear, you have to throw it away and then put them in boring underwear until after their next nap. Then you can start again. Hopefully he'll be so devastated that his favorite underwear is going in the trash that he will start using the potty.

the three day method seems to work for everyone but us
I am getting so frustrated! P will use the potty when you ask him to (And go!) but will only tell us sometimes if he has to go, but knows that he isn’t supposed to pee/poop in his underwear because after he does it, he goes oh no!! I peed. He has the ability to stay dry for naps . He will be three in july. He doesn't want to wear diapers anymore and LOVES underwear.

Anyone else in the same boat? I feel like potty training has gone so easily for everyone on hello bee every time I read about it! What am I doing wrong?!?!
