I had vasospasms for a few weeks when LO's latch was going through a bad phase. For some reason she started latching better again & they went away. They hurt so bad though - I'm sorry :( I would take ibuprofen & use warm compresses but they often snuck up on me randomly & I would just have to tough it out!

@Vegmama: yes! I had this too! ALso due to poor latch and nipple damage.

Taking 500mg of calcium and magnesium helped ENORMOUSLY and the pain was completely gone within 2 weeks and never came back. The main thing is to adjust LO's latch so that it is correct though--which I am sure you are trying to do as well! The pain was horrible horrible for me--I literally would cry thinking that it would last as long as I was nursing. But it didn't!

Also has your LO been checked for a tongue tie/lip tie? My had both and they caused most of the damage I had, I think.

@oliviaoblivia: So sorry you had to deal with this. I think mine is due to nipple damage and a slight infection. My nipples were in really bad shape (due to poor latch) during the 1st week, which is finally healing.

This gives me hope!!

I had vasospasm early in our breastfeeding. Mine were due to nipple damage and thrush. I used the APNO religiously and was very cautious about every latch and after a week or so they calmed down and I haven't had them since. LO is 13.5 months and still nursing three times a day.
I hope yours go away soon.

Saw my midwife and lactation consultant today to see if we could be a little more proactive about the excruciating pain in my nipples. Over six weeks of breast feeding, and the pain isn't any better.

Today, they have both diagnosed me with Vasospasm ... possibly due to Raynaud's Syndrome. I am doing everything possible to find reflief: Ibuprofen, warm dry compress, not letting my nipples air dry, using my APNO & ointments, and starting a prescription of nifedipine.

Anyone else have experience with this? If so, did you take this prescription? Did it help? Did you continue breast feeding? Did the pain ever go away? I'm just wondering what the long term picture looks like here. Obviously, every case is different, but I'd love to hear any other experiences.
