@foodiebee: I'm sorry you are going through this too! I don't know much about endo, I had 2 successful pregnancies and didn't have any trouble getting pregnant, so it has never been a suspicion before. I'm going to ask my doctor about it though, and pay closer attention to my pain symptoms, since I've always just focused on the spotting.

@lamariniere: Yes, I have very similar symptoms to this, including the rectal pain, living on the toilet during my period, groin aches/pains, etc. Also horrible back pain, night sweats, hot flashes. I also had a very short luteal phase, consistently around 10 days, longest ever was 12. I'd start spotting around 8-9 days and then get AF on day 10. My RE diagnosed me with endo unconfirmed via surgery (but every dr I've ever seen has been pretty convinced based on my symptoms; no one feels like there's any doubt) because we decided to move straight to IVF first.

@lamariniere: Worth checking out for sure but could be just random ... that’s what we concluded at least for that red bleeding cycle of mine, it also started really early but next was back to “normal”. I hope it’s just one weird cycle to have it starting so early!

@bhbee: your spotting sounds similar to mine, but this month it started about 4dpo, which is unusual for me and sparked my visit to the gyno. I have really painful ovulation, especially on the right side. I occasional have the rectal pain, but not often. Cramps are usually not that bad, I don’t take any pain relievers for them.

@lamariniere: do you have the pain issues also or just spotting?

It’s normal for me to spot like crazy. I’ve never gotten resolution nor honestly had anyone very concerned, more like “well that’s unfortunate maybe you should try birth control”. I once got an ultrasound for a bunch of midcycle red bleeding. But my norm would be to spot by 11dpo if not 9dpo and progress to get AF around 16dpo. And AF can drag out with spotting also. Super annoying, but it did let me know early about failed ttc cycles ...

Bump!

I know this is an old thread, but my spotting issues have become very similar to the OP's. I saw my gyno this week who did an US of my uterus (normal) and ran a PAP, HPV and STD testing to rule out anything (all negative). I am not TTC. She said the next course of action is antibiotics for 10 days in case the testing missed something, and if bleeding continues after, a hysteroscopy. Has anyone had a similar experience, or previous posters, have your issues resolved?

I can't really recall how long I've had prolonged spotting since I wasn't really paying attention to anything until more recently when I started charting.

The strong clinical suspicion for endo (because it can't definitively be diagnosed until I get surgery), is because during my period I have:
1. Rectal and groin pain
2. Most recently hip pain that would cause a dull ache down to my knee
3. UTI like pelvic pain
4. UTI-like urinary frequency and also increased bowel movement (living on toilet the first day of period)
5. Migraine on first day

and also intercourse is painful when I did not have this problem before.

Good luck at your ultrasound TravellingBee! I bet you can't wait to pee!

@Newbee: Have you always spotted like this? I have been the last few months, but my doctor didn't mention endo. I'm going for an ultrasound this morning to see what they find. My doctor refused to do a blood test for progesterone...

Thank you so much for sharing your stories and experience Mrs.PineCone and 78H20. Hearing success stories are really a nice pick-me-up.

The receptionist from the ob/gyn I saw left a vmail telling me that my u/s results were normal, but didn't follow up with the next steps. I was waffling back and forth last night about whether I should call the doctor's office back to tell them that I left with a lot of unanswered questions and now I have more since they ruled out polyps as the cause of prolonged spotting. I've been hearing that most women get a lap done and conceive afterwards as well, so I really didn't understand why that doctor told me a lap would only serve the purpose of definitively diagnosing me rather than also improving my fertility. It actually kind of makes me angry thinking about how it didn't seem that she cared about my fertility at all and shrugged it off.

Btw, my period starts of as dark dark red clots and black tar-like stuff and then heavy bright red flow for 1 day.

Although I wish we were not all in the same endo boat, I really appreciate the support and advice from you all on here. It is especially helpful as we go through this journey.

I have short cycles, around 24 days, with a 10 day luteal phase with some spotting beforehand. I have been pregnant twice. The first time I had a mc, but my progesterone was fine. The second time I had a successful pregnancy (also with good progesterone). I have cramps, but I think they are "regular", not like what you are describing - I'm sorry about that... it sounds awful. I'm sorry your doc wasn't especially empathic or helpful... I hope you can find someone else.

@Newbee: Ok i just read your update on what your Doctor said. I would also get a second opinion as LAZB said. If you do some research a lot of women get pregnant within 6 months after a lap to clean up the endo. I am the unfortunate case who had 2 laps and never got pregnant until I recently did IVF but I know enough to know women can get pregnant on their own after surgery. Myy OB gave me months of TTC on our own after the lap before referring me to an RE. I also encourage you to get acupuncture as that help a ton with endo pain/ inflammation and fertility.

But since it has been 11 month and most likely you do have endo I think a further work up of your husbands SA and your basic CD3 labs would be helpful. If there are other issues going on there you may need to move onto more aggressive treatments but if you do get a lap and only have stage 1-2 most RE's will give IUI a chance, if your have stage 3-4 then usually they feel IVF is best bet.

LazB - That's correct that endo can only be diagnosed with laproscopic surgery. The doctor said that my symptoms made it clear that I had endo, but that the surgery would only confirm it (she didn't mention anything about clearing out any lesions to help with fertility, which I thought was weird. It seemed that she thought it wasn't worth it just for the basis of confirming a diagnosis). I agree with you, I would like to get a second opinion from my regular ob/gyn about doing the laproscopic surgery to see what the severity is, if my tubes are blocked, and whether they can clean anything out.

I have an u/s scheduled tomorrow for polyps. If if I do have polyps, I may do a hysteroscopy where they can address the endo and polyps in the same procedure. If I don't have polyps, then I am going to wait until Oct to get a second opinion from my regular doc about doing a lap.

I also love your success story of getting pregnant without IVF. That makes me so happy! Thank you so much for your advice!

Kiwibee- I am pretty regular, so for me, I don't think it is associated with constipation. I am sorry that your polyps may be coming back. I hope you have some luck in your TTC journey. Hugs.

@Newbee: I'm glad you updated, but I would really encourage you to get a second opinion. First of all, endometriosis can only be diagnosed when you have a laproscopic surgery, not just by symptoms. Second of all, even if you have endometriosis (which it sounds like you do), you don't know which stage. As I said above, I have stage IV (the worst it can be), and after laproscopic surgery I have been able to get pregnant successfully twice without IVF. I'm not saying that the same will definitely happen for you, but I definitely wouldn't jump to that right away.

Hi @Newbee. Does the pain go together with constipation? I have struggled most of my adult life with this. Docs say the constipation is related (or made worse?) by endo. I also had several uterine polyps removed a couple of years ago and I must say that did reduce the spotting...although it seems to be coming back :crying: Your post reminds me to make an appointment.

I just wanted to give an update for those who are visiting this thread because of similar issues.

It turns out that I do have endometriosis and I am scheduled for an u/s to evaluate for uterine polyps.

The rectal and all other pains associated with my period indicated that I have endometriosis, and the prolonged spotting may be due to polyps.

The doctor didn't mention anything about low progesterone, nor did she suggest doing any blood tests. I didn't really push for it, because I didn't want to seem like I was fishing for anything. She didn't seem concerned about the prolonged spotting though.

She told me it would be difficult to get pregnant, but not impossible, and that our risk of miscarriage is higher. She also told me that our only option would be IVF if we can't conceive on our own. She was very matter of fact about everything while I was holding back tears in her office. I asked if there was anything we could do improve our fertility and she said no. I also asked her if there was anything I could do about the rectal pain and she said no.

I have my annual pap with my regular ob/gyn in Oct, so I'll see what she thinks about everything, too.

Hi @newbee !

DH and I ttc for 7 months, took a break for 5 mos and are now trying again. Just wanted to say that I am in a similar boat. Never realized my extremely light spotting until I started ttc but I do tend to spot sometimes 6-7 days before AF. Also started to suspect low progesterone. I haven't been to gyno yet. But I did start taking vitex (chaste berry) herbal supplement. It's supposed to be an overall fertility hormone regulator, can help with low P and even early stage of Endo I think. Here is a link to more info. I just started taking it this cycle and am anxious to see if it lessens the spotting once it kicks in. Maybe worth looking into since it's a very inexpensive supplement.

I'm on my phone, so hard to respond in detail, but wanted to let you know that I also tend to spot before AF and I have stage IV endometriosis, and I have had one successful pregnancy, and am currently 12 weeks pregnant with another successful pregnancy. I did seem to have low progesterone, and a short luteal phase, but got pregnant with the help of clomid and progesterone.

@Newbee: I think it really depends on how advanced the endo is. In my case it was pretty bad and I needed surgery to be able to get pregnant, but luckily that went great and we conceived DS six months after the operation. So it's definitely possible!!!

@Newbee: I have short LP (10 days max) and spot at least a few days before. I've been pregnant three times: one mc, my daughter and pregnant now but it's still early. So spotting has never hindered me being able to get pregnant. Good luck to you!

Thank you for the support ladies. I made an appointment for next Tuesday (although not with my usual doc) right away. Is successful pregnancy still possible with endometriosis?

I had endometriosis and you're right that your symptoms could point to that, but like pp's mentioned it could be low progesterone or PCOS too. Don't be afraid to push your doctor to find out what's going on if you feel something's not right with your body! The amount of time you've been TTC shouldn't be relevant.

I've had brown spotting/CM before AF every cycle when I have not been on progesterone. However, my progesterone levels were checked and were fine. So it doesn't necessarily mean anything.

I'm so sorry for your losses. *hugs*

Thank you so much for responding ladies. It is nice to hear from others who know my pain, because nobody quite understands how painful the rectal pains are! (although I do wish we weren't all in this boat!)

I feel that I get judged for being worried at only 3 months of TTC, but I just got the inkling that something wasn't right about my symptoms. A little scared, but I will call my gynecologist to get an earlier appointment about this (although I still have to wait until Oct for my pap).

I have the same thing. It took me 12 cycles to get pregnant and only with Clomid. I had borderline low progesterone but the suppositories never worked. This time I've been able to get pregnant but I still spot easily and I've lost 2 pregnancies.
I wonder if you have a touch of endometriosis as well.
