@Anagram: It's hit and miss with DS using a straw. It's 50/50 if he'll just chew on it vs sucking on it. I just hold it and leave it in his mouth and after chewing a couple times, he'll suck on it and get some liquid out. Few sips, back to chewing.

Another technique I do is that I suck up the water into the straw then just feed him the straw with the liquid instead of giving him the cup with the straw. He takes to that better.

We have 5 of these, they leak :( We use them for milk, since she only gets milk at meals we can keep it from tipping over and leaking too much. And as for the lids getting moldy, they do BUT you can pop the lid apart and clean it! I just did it to all of ours and they go back together just fine.

The cups we use for water to minimize leaking are the playtex little grippers straw cups and the children's camelbak.

@septca: I always forget how adept C is with a straw now... Until I have him on my hip and a drink in my hand, and realize he's bending over taking sips of my tea! Ack!

@Anagram: R didn't get a straw for a long time. Took about 4 months for her to get it. Then one day it just clicked. But she would only drink a couple ozs at a time. Sippy was the only way to get her to drink more.

@Alivoo01: I can't even get a drink out of the Munchkin myself!

@Anagram: DS didn't get it until he saw a baby a few months older than him do it, and then he picked it right up! Peer pressure?

@Anagram: You might want to try drinking everything out of a straw for a few days. That worked for a friend of mine. I always use a straw, so DD was super curious about it from the start - and learned really early (maybe like 6 months?). Imagine both our surprise when she got a mouthful of iced coffee! :bummed:

How do you guys teach your LO to use a straw cup? Mine just won't suck on it, only bites on it--therefore, she can't figure that liquid will come out.

She has finally gotten into the take and toss sippies. But even those she'll only drink an oz or so at a time.

I'm not sure how we'll ever get off bottles at this rate.

@grizz: I bought the Munchkin straw cup, but it's so dang hard to suck out of!! There goes $8 for a one-time use. Ugh

@grizz: We don't use straws anymore. Besides some times at home water in the Zoli or B Box. When we first switched the WCM, she did better with a sippy to drink enough.
I am going to try and move to all straw cups again in the future. If we can find one that doesn't leak!

They leak after a little while - liquid gets trapped in the top and then spills out.

The only good straw cup I have found for milk is the Lansinoh Momma cup. http://www.amazon.com/Lansinoh-mOmma-Straw-Handles-Green/dp/B006YPTZRO/ref=pd_sim_ba_7?ie=UTF8&refRID=17Y69Z5W54KN19ABF7D0
I also use the Take and Toss straw cups at home (for high chair use only) because they DON'T actually leak as bad as the more closed cups unless you turn them upside down.
http://www.amazon.com/The-First-Years-Straw-Ounce/dp/B0054YZDWC/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1401809432&sr=8-1&keywords=take+and+toss+straw+cups

For water, I use a Zoli or a B Box cup because DD really likes them and they are easy to suck out of, but they ONLY work with water and it can't be very cold... if you use these cups for anything cold, the pressure builds up and makes them leak through the straw. :bummed:
http://www.amazon.com/B-box-Essential-Sippy-Cup-Blue/dp/B00C5OREOY/ref=pd_sim_ba_16?ie=UTF8&refRID=17Y69Z5W54KN19ABF7D0
http://www.amazon.com/ZoLi-Bot-Straw-Sippy-Blue/dp/B005NJSMHG/ref=pd_cp_ba_0

Can you tell that I have spent *way* too much money on straw cups?

Yes, we just got one and I love it. Finally something that doesn't leak! But...when I went to order more, I found a couple of reviews that said water can get trapped in the top and get moldy. I can totally see it happen because it doesn't appear there's any way to open up the "cap" and let it dry
