I don't like taking meds! Luckily my MS was mild enough to forgo it.
My sister had to take zofran often with her pregnancy and she turned out completely fine. I'd say if you are really in bad enough shape then the benefits of it outweigh the risks. And that's coming from a medication hating hippie. :)

@HLK: thinking about you, lady. HG with two little ones already running around sounds awful. I didn't have HG, but I had horrible nausea for 16 weeks, and it was the worst thing ever. I was pretty sure that I had lost touch with reality in the thick of it, and the thought of it lasting 6 months made me want to cry. Do whatever you need to do to feel even marginally better! It will be much better for you and baby for being that sick all the time!

@erinpye: thanks for that link again. It's scary how severe HG can be!

Zofran was a miracle drug for me! Like some PP, I'm a teacher and the thought of throwing up in front of my classes was causing a lot of anxiety. My morning sickness was horrible, I was losing a lot of weight, and my Dr didn't hesitate to prescribe it. Anecdotally, my pregnancy was uneventful afterwards, and baby was born perfectly healthy.

I took it a LOT with the boys, and I was pretty cautious with what I took during pregnancy generally. I couldn't hold down water, and I felt pretty confident that it was important for me to be able to stay hydrated and have some, any, nutrition coming in. :) I only took half a pill at a time though and that was enough to keep me from actually throwing up. I did not enjoy one notable side effect of the zofran, but that was only affecting me, and not them! I realize this isn't scientific proof, but I had no issues during pregnancy and my boys were born healthy and perfect (minus just being early since they were twinsies). I would not hesitate to take it again.

ETA: I agree with PP about it not making the nausea go away, but at least it stops you from actually throwing up.

I'm a nurse and I took it my whole first trimester. A recent study has shown no increase in birth defects, miscarriages, etc. (I read the actual study but it's not available full text online... This article summarizes nicely)

I had to take Zofran every day for almost my entire pregnancy, when I didn't take it I threw up literally everything I ate - just like you said, even water or ice chips! Unfortunately I was like this right to the delivery room, I threw up over 5 times a day if I didn't take it, and honestly I never thought twice about it. Zofran's risks are very low, and your baby not getting any nutrients because you're throwing up everything is much more dangerous than taking Zofran is. Do what you need to do! But I hope you're feeling better soon.

@jhd: agree on the constipation. SO, bad. But not bad enough for me to stop taking it. Lesser of two very bad evils.

Also...surprised about the amount of educators on this thread! But it's true that you just can't work under our conditions (not being able to go to the bathroom whenever you want, for one thing) and be throwing up all day.

I couldn't have functioned without Zofran in my 1st tri and even some into the 2nd tri. It didn't stop the nausea (it was 24/7!) but it kept me from actually vomiting. I am a teacher and have a very full schedule just now so getting sick all the time just wasn't going to work! It did make me constipated though so be ready for that! ;)

I hope it works and you feel better soon!

I think Zofran has been around for a while, so I think if it harmed fetuses we would know by now. My doctor was enthusiastic about prescribing it for me because he was happy to be able to give me some relief. I'm seven months now and still have to take it on occasion because I get so nauseous and start sweating and feel like I will throw up and pass out at the same time. It has helped me tremendously and I have no qualms taking it. I try not to take any medicine during pregnancy that I don't need, but if I need it and my doctor says it's safe, I don't worry about taking it.

I took Zofran at max dosage (for at home use) from 7-17 weeks and then slowly tapered the dosage down as the nausea lessened. I don't think I had HG, but I had extremely bad all-day, 24 hour sickness until week 17 when it Finally started to taper off. There was no come-and-go. It came at 5.5 weeks and stayed constant for the next 3 months.

Even though I never required hospitalization or anything (I started Zofran at 7 weeks) that was literally the worst 10 weeks if my life. All I could do was lay in bed. I didn't wash 1 dish, cook one meal, clean one thing that entire 3 months.

The crazy thing was that Zofran only stopped the throwing up for me--- it didn't lessen the nauseated feeling at all. So I still felt miserable constantly but just didn't actually throw up.

Honestly, my morning sickness was worse than my newborn days. My LO is here, safe and sound, and I don't regret taking it at all.

@HLK208: flyer losing 9lbs in 6weeks and being hospitalized due to dehydration, I took me some Zofran! I took it from week 9-21 and it was a Godsend for me. I still have some which my OB told me to keep for bad days. I think I used them a few times after that 21w mark too. e is obviously fine:)

@prettylizy: Diclectin isn't available in the US (it was taken off the market here). It's roughly equivalent to taking a unisom tablet and B6, which unfortunately doesn't really have much success in treating Hyperemesis Gravidarum.

@Greentea: 2 weeks is a long time to feel terrible when you're there, but a lot better than the 6-9 months of dehydration, vomiting, inability to eat, drink, need for IV therapy, health risks, inability to shower or even wash your own hair, that HG comes with.

@HLK208: you already know I stand by your choice to take it 100%, and did the same with both my pregnancies, but for anyone else who maybe doesn't understand, HG isn't the same as "bad morning sickness" and can threaten the life of the mother and baby unless controlled with fluids and medication- namely Zofran. It's like living with the worst bout of food poisoning you've ever had, every single moment of every single day, for 6-9 months straight. You get no break, nothing takes your mind off the severe nausea, you lose weight, you get depressed, you have very dark times, you cannot function many days, and a surprisingly high percentage of women who have it elect to terminate wanted babies because they can't face another single day of laying on the bathroom floor feeling that miserable- that's how bad it is. If there is a safe drug that helps a person that sick through such a hard time, absolutely take it! And HLK- your mom is a very smart, educated woman, but she's not an OB, and I still had nurses gingerale-ing and crackering me when I was so dehydrated 3 bags of fluid in 2 hours didn't make me pee. Trust me, if that actually worked for me, I would have been all over it. HG still isn't very understood, and I guess if your mom wants to give you IV fluids every other day or so, that would be your other option  Zofran is safe and effective.

More info on HG and how it's not morning sickness, for anyone who is curious, found here: helpher.org

I was perscribed Diclectin for nausea and it's great. Its also a Class A drug which is apparently A O.K. for pregnancy. Can you ask for that instead of Zofran? It's the 'go to' anti nausea drug in Canada

Zofran is the only way I survived my first trimester. I was so, so sick. Far beyond the "normal" morning sickness I've witnessed others have. I was teaching at the time and leaving the classroom to vomit wasn't an option. It didn't make me feel 100% but it allowed me to function.

I was able to stop in my 2nd trimester. B is happy and healthy with no ill effects. It is such a common drug, I really wouldn't worry!
