My daughter (2.5 yrs) and I both got the flu vaccination in the fall. We both got sick last month. Her symptoms were one day behind mine. When mine suddenly got worse I went to the Dr and got tested. I had influenza A. I was 37 weeks pregnant. We immediately got my daughter tested. Sure enough, she tested positive too. We both took Tamiflu and felt better by the next day. It was definitely a more mild case. I was still recovering when I had my baby. Coughing after tearing and having stitches was very painful!

My soon to be 3 y/o had the shot in November-ish, had the flu last week. The highest temp we got was 101.8°, and he never really acted very sick. It slowed him down for a few days, slept a little extra, but that was about it

It's much more likely that the vaccine covered the most likely strains of flu to be active this season, and your daughter picked up a strain that wasn't included in the shot.
Happened both to me and my DS.

yup! happened to my kid 2 weeks ago. I think having the shot helped with a speedier recovery though, so at least there's that.

We didn’t get the vaccine this year, but influenza A was going around at school in November. Both of my kids got a virus like others have described, with a high fever, but both tested negative for influenza.

Not this year....yet.

Last year we all got flu shots and my older son still got the flu. It was super mild and he got Tamifu immediately, so his symptoms were very mild other than a higher fever.

Hope your kid gets well soon.

My son had the flu shot in September and had a 103 fever last night and flu like symptoms today but the doctor wouldn't test for flu saying he would not give Tamiflu to my son because his symptoms were mild. Since the 103 fever at 1am; he was fever free for a few hours this am and then it only went back up to 101.5 before I gave him for Tylenol. I personally would have liked the flu test as other people may get it from him and may have more severe symptoms - ugh.
In December I got the flu after having a flu shot in October. I went to urgent care and got Tamiflu and antibiotics for the strep that I had at the same time.

@peachykeen: It's my 4-yr-old.. yeah, baby had 2 shots and older DD had 1.

She's feeling a lot better this morning. She was burning up all night, but her fever is below 101 now. I'm keeping her home and as cozy as possible, despite her high energy and desire to dance 24/7.

Thank you all!

@CatchAFallingStar: Is this your older daughter or the baby? You probably already know, but babies need 2 flu shots the first year they receive it for full protection. So if the baby has only received one shot so far, she's not fully protected yet.

That said, my 4yo (she was 3 then) got a mild version of the flu last year despite the shot, which didn't match the flu strains very well last year. Having had the shot really lessens symptoms/severity in most cases, so it's definitely still worth getting. Luckily the baby didn't get sick, and neither did DH or I.

Hope she's feeling better quickly!

@CatchAFallingStar: Yes DD got the flu after having the shot. The shot only protects from certain strains and even then it isnt a 100% protection. One thing though is that having the shot usually gives them a milder version of the flu.
ETA I saw your update that it isnt the flu. Hopefully it is just a passing virus

Yes, our whole family this year. LO was out of daycare for a full week. Sudden onset with fever above 105 when the tylenol/motrin would wear off and dry cough. He also had an allergic reaction to tamiflu. Both my husband and I still feel drained from it a week later, but we survived. Hope your LO feels better soon!

I’ve been hearing about that virus going around here too. I think my 3 yo has a mild version of it- she was really sick for two days, but never a high fever, then got much better, then two days later she was awful, turned out she had developed an ear infection (which yay, is perfectly treatable! Unlike the virus!). I have friends whose kids got the flu shot and still had the flu this month too. January just kind of sucks. I hope your LOs feel better quickly!

Oh and when my kids won’t drink enough liquids, juice boxes help a lot. Even if it’s apple juice from a cup or a juice box? They will drink more from the box. Must be because it’s more expensive and wasteful.

@CatchAFallingStar: YES! While not recently, both DD and I had received the Flu shot the year we had moved to HI. She and I had gotten our shots on the mainland a few days before our move and 3 mos later (December), we both caught the flu. According to the hospital, they suspect the virus that had been going around on Oahu was brought by tourists from Asia as the strain was similar to the one there. The vaccine made for a milder flu (seriously, any flu is the worst) but DD and I still had fever, aches, headaches, vomiting, and DD had a few "accidents." I felt terrible for DD as it was around the holidays and she was just so lethargic. We both were given Tamiflu but it took a while before we were in ship-shape form. Luckily, DH had gotten his shot on-island as soon as the ARMY allowed ... he never got our flu.

I hope your LO begins to feel better soon!

My son had that nasty winter virus with a fever like you're describing. The fever would come and go spiking for like 3 days. It wasn't that horrible though, he was grumpy, lathargic and had no appetite for a few days but never really down and out for what that's worth. also his pediatrician said he's only worried if it's 105 for like 7 days.

@CatchAFallingStar: oh good! They were sick for a solid week and not fully recovered for probably 10-12 days. It was really awful. The worst of it with the fever was only 3 days I think. We just gave them Advil and kept pushing water. My 4 year old would not eat pretty much anything but did continue to drink water. They also had very wet sounding coughs for a long time. Hang in there, it was really rough :crying:

@CatchAFallingStar: Are you sure it’s the flu? Both my girls got a nasty virus with over 103 temps and we called the nurses line and they just said fever isn’t really a concern. It’s more concerning if you can’t wake them or they stop drinking fluids. She said the flu is identifiable by sudden onset, super high fever and a dry cough which was not consistent with what they had. I have a friend who is a Nurse Practitioner and she told me there’s another bad virus going around but it’s not the actual flu so maybe that’s what your little one has too.

Yes, two years in a row. :-(

It wasn't too bad - fever and lethargic for a few days, Tylenol/Motrin helped him feel better. Last year we all ended up getting the flu but this year (so far) the rest of the family has avoided it.

Hope she's feeling better soon! For my son it lasted about 5 days.

Not my kid but it happened to me last year! It’s not really uncommon since the shot is only partially effective (but still worth getting!!).

The good news is that the flu shot may still help the body fight it off faster. Flu is no fun but I’d just keep an eye on it and call the pedi if you’re worried. That’s what they’re there for. My kids have had fever 105+ with regular viruses and the nurse line just gave me suggestions to try to bring it down some (basic stuff like meds schedule and tepid bath and such I think but memory is failing me)
