Yep, he cries 3-8 minutes every night. It's been really hard because it makes me feel like we are doing sleep training wrong, and I see so many stories about babies happily going down for the night. But sometimes he will go in his crib without tears for 30 minutes, then suddenly cry for 5 minutes, then fall asleep, so I do think it's just how he winds down.

This blog post helped me feel like it was more normal:

Yes, yes and yes. Not all the time, but my P and your E sound incredibly similar in personalities - and P still does this on and off. It usually lasts for a few days- weeks then passes again. I think it's linked to development with us but not always.
It's eased off a lot as she's gotten older and better able to wind down in a more constructive way - she spent an hour tonight playing dollies with her baby doll, teddies etc lined up for bed in her cot.
Hang in there!

Yes. It's the worst after her routine is disrupted. Nap time is usually easy but bedtime gets a lot of whine/crying protest. Our life will calm down in a month and I'm hoping being able to keep a much better schedule and transitioning to a big bed will help.

LO2 regularly cries himself to sleep. It was difficult for me to get used to at first since sleep training worked differently with LO1.

@brownie: Yup, baby whisperer! Our LO is the same way. If he isn't alseep from his bedtime bottle when we put him down he needs to cry about 10 minutes to fall asleep.

Yes, we never did CIO, but my 2nd DD always cries a little. It could be a few seconds or a few minutes, nothing long. She even does this for car naps! So it's just become a signal for me that she is about to pass out.

Yes! Definitely us! We did CIO 8 months ago and she used to go down so easily right when we did it. It's gotten progressively worse and she cries for at least 5-8 minutes at night every single night.

@Skadi: she goes to bed at 6pm anyway most nights!! We recently had to cut a nap out because she was bouncing off the walls until 11pm and so she is often ready for bed pretty early. Sometimes we time it just right but mostly we get this - screaming, standing up, flopping back down, wailing, writhing about, passing out on her face.

Thanks @brownie: @Mrs Green Grass: . You give me hope that its just normal!! She's a spirited little one - stubborn to the max - in every facet of her life!

Could she be overtired? Is there any difference if you put her to bed half an hour or even an hour earlier?

I don't know your daughter, but I read something in a book that stuck with me (baby whisperer I think). Some kids need to use crying to wind down. There is a distinction between that type of crying and straight up hysterical. But it could be that she just needs to wind down.

My son always cries but it's usually only 2-3 minutes, but we get 15 or 20 every once in awhile. I do go back in if his crying seems out of the ordinary. But it doesn't really matter what I do, he will cry when I put him down, even if he was asleep first, so I don't see an alternative. (He's almost 2.)

Just wonderin'.

I always hear CIO referenced as a short-term-pain kinda method to fix baby sleep but never as a long term plan..... It works for E - its the only thing that does work in fact - but she isn't improving! Some nights she goes straight to sleep but most nights she throws herself about and cries until she can't go on any more and passes out on her face. It usually only takes 15 or so minutes.....

Normal, right?? Or has it just "not worked" and I'm being stubborn and cruel putting her through it every night?
