I used lanolin on my nipples a lot during pregnancy because they got so dry and uncomfortable.

I've only used it twice since LO was born. I stopped soaping my nipples in the shower because I read somewhere to do that (not sure where though). For the most part in the early days I'd let some milk dry on them and give them as much fresh air as possible to keep them from cracking or getting chapped. The few times I've used the lanolin, it was as a barrier in the shower to keep the moisture off.

I would think this would be the opposite of what you need! I've heard you need to toughen them up. Months before my first babe was born the doula told me not to put ANYTHING on them, including soap, moisturizer, etc. Also she told me if I could have them out in the open or give them a couple minutes of sun that would help, but I was never so bold :)

PS A lot of people don't use lanolin even after starting to BF. On the rare occasion that I needed a little something, I used Earth Mama Angel Baby nipple butter and it was great.

I did. I think it helped a lot! The only time I ever had nipple issues was when I use the pump at the hospital. Other than that, I never had any problems. I started using it sometime during my 3rd trimester. I'd put it on at night and wear some bra pads.

@bluestriped bee: I guess the thought is to not toughen them up, but get them nice and moisturized. Now I'm wondering about toughening up your nips...

@LAGS: Maybe I'll give it a shot during the last month.

On my tube of lanolin (Lansinoh) it says to use it while pregnant. I'm not sure if it makes a measurable difference, or they just want to sell more though, I never consistently did it.

Yes but I'm not even pregnant yet and I use lanolin on my lips. My doctor recommended it. It's really sticky but it really helps my chapped lip. Plus the tube lasts forever.

I don't know if using that will toughen your nipples. I thought lanolin is used to heal skin.

I've heard about toughening up your nipples by rubbing them with a washcloth or something. Ouch! From what I've heard, you can't really prepare your nipples? Not sure though!

So I was at this BBQ yesterday and these two ladies told me to start rubbing on the nip cream to prepare for breast feeding. I never would've never even thought to do that. I guess it would help get them nice and moisturized? I figure it couldn't hurt to give it a try.

Anyone ever heard of using lanolin before birth? Or has anyone tried it and did it help?
