We rented a mid-size sedan for our last vacation and did just fine with rf and ff car seats and alllllll our bags and crap :) I prefer having our SUV for long trips, but this worked out just fine.

@MrsBeluga: Thank you for all of your info and photos, it's really helped! I am obsessed with the car and I will just deal with any minor inconveniences

@Smurfette: It probably would be tight on trips, but we don't honestly take that many....We get free gas with my car/gas card so we would definitely be using mine on any trips, but it's such a beautiful car, I think we'll both just make do and be grateful for it! I only keep vehicles 2 years anyway before it's time for me to order a new one and turn mine in.

@catomd00: I do worry about missing the height! But I decided to go with the Volvo because I'm so deeply in love with it for some reason. The SUV option, there are actually 2, are just ones that I don't like as much as the one I have now, and I definitely don't love it as much as the Volvo. So I'm going to gamble on the height factor!

Depending on what the suv option is, I don't think space wise there's always a big difference between a 2 row suv and a larger sedan. My thing would be the height. I feel safer in an suv than I do in a sedan and for that reason alone I'd get an suv. I had an accord when DD was born and even
Though it's spacious and very safe, I just felt the need to get the height from an suv.

I have an Accord and while our little on is now FF, we had no issues with her Foonf fitting. It was a little tight getting her in and out. Personally I think a sedan would be tight for 2 kids and taking trips. But maybe you aren't an over packer like me. We are going to get an SUV cause we want more space since we are going to be trying for #2 in a couple months.

I just went from a Jeep Liberty to a Hyundai Sonata and love it. Granted, I only have one LO/car seat, but the back seat is actually way roomier than it was in the Jeep and the trunk holds a ton of stuff. My DH was actually just commenting on how he's amazed how much fits in the trunk. All this plus the way better gas mileage has made me happy we switched.

I checked out your link and that is one beautiful car! Jetta's are on the tiny side of sedan's so there is a good chance the Volvo backseat is bigger. We had the Foonf FF for about a week, and it was SOOOO much easier to get her in and out, so the struggle is somewhat temporary.

Here are more pictures with LO in her Foonf, when I put her in I have to angle her head then body into the car. And another showing the tiny space between the drivers seat (I am 5'7) and the RF Foonf.

@MrsBeluga: Thank you for the photo! I can't figure out how to save the pics from this website, but I found this one online and it's the exact model I would get, it shows the back seat. Does that look similar to the size of yours in the Jetta?

https://www.dullesdonbeyervolvo.com/new/Volvo/2016-Volvo-S60-dulles+va-1b7a4e130a0e0a6b761b393cdd56a9fd.htm

I am soooooo in lurve with it!

@oliviaoblivia: So my company actually offers a REALLY nice van option, leather/sunroof/power doors/etc, and I had actually considered that. I don't think I'm van-ready, but it definitely makes me second guess the Volvo bc I'm passing up an awesome van with tons more space and basically all the same options. I'm a little worried I'll kick myself! But with 3 kids, most definitely do the van! I would too!

We have a small SUV (Forester) but will be getting a van in the next weeks.
Last summer we rented a Sonata and found it had more room in the back seat. We had an infant seat and a Fllo installed and could both drive (5'-7" & 5'-11") no problem.

@twodoghouse: This! For me, size of the vehicle isn't too big of an issue because I'm short (5'2") so RF isn't an issue. BUT DH is almost 6' and it makes a huge difference!

I have a tiny Jetta, a RF Foonf, and am 5-7. It is manageable but not my favorite, if money didn't matter I would hands down get a small SUV. Putting and taking out in a RF is hard and LO often bumps her head.

Edited to add this photo. Not a ton of space to get LO (especially my squirmy 2 year old) in or out. Not a deal breaker, but still a total pain that I don't look forward to.

We once rented a sedan (Nissan Altima) and were able to fit two car seats plus me in the middle. Trunk space was spacious and we were able to fit quite a bit (two suitcases and 1 UB umbrella stroller). I think you should be fine!

@twodoghouse: that is awesome info! Thank you so much for weighing in!! I do think cargo space is where the difference could be, but I only ever haul a single stroller bc DD1 walks or rides on the piggyback attachment. And my diaper bag isn't huge. I do keep my supplies for work in the trunk but I usually take them out on the weekends if I haul the stroller anywhere bc I don't want anything to get damaged. Thank you
so much for sharing!

@T.H.O.U.: Usually any bags go in the floorboards or the front seat if DH isn't with us. I think the car is beautiful (and safe!) enough to make it work! I usually only keep cars for 2 years because we order at 75000 miles so if it's a mistake, I'll only have it around 2 years:). And it's free so I'm not out anything other than mild inconvenience;)

@Foodnerd81: the height is another thing I'm wondering about! Like how much difference does that make once you're used to the higher lift? We always use my car for most outings or trips bc I get free gas with the car, and he has a big truck anyway so his backseat is definitely not bigger:)

I haven't gone from an SUV to a sedan, but both Hubs and I have mid-sized sedans and two kids in rear-facing car seats, and we have no issues. We both have Honda Accords - do you know if the size is comparable to the Volvo S60? Based on pictures, I think it is. We use the Graco MySize 65/70 for our car seats.

I don't know how the trunk space is for the Volvo, but our Sedan is plenty big. We recently went on a trip and was able to fit all the following: pack 'n play, air mattress, cooler, beach cart, beach tent, beach bags, beach toys, life jackets, diaper bag, grocery bag w/ food, two back packs, and probably other stuff I'm forgetting. Some of it had to go on the floor in the back seat, but we easily fit everything we needed for an overnight trip with two small kids.

We have both a smallish/mid-size SUV (Honda CRV) and a large sedan (Acura TL). With two car seats, the sedan has always been just fine. My husband was always able to easily cart around the girls. The only time it made a big difference whether we drove the SUV or the sedan was if we were going on a long trip or vacation. The SUV obviously had more room for backpacks, suitcases, pillows, toys, etc. We could pack a cooler that would be accessible while in the car, whereas the only room for a cooler in the sedan is the trunk, which meant we would have to pull over to access it (not ideal).

So, if you aren't planning on taking road trips with the sedan, and don't need to be able to access your storage while driving (meaning you're okay with trunk storage only), then you should be fine with a sedan! I bet there's plenty of room in the back seat and the car seats will fit fine.

ETA: I should add that we now have 3 kids and don't use the sedan at all anymore, since it won't fit 3 car seats across. But it worked great with just 2.

Can you test drive it with the girls? See how much space the seats take up, how difficult it is to put them to their car seats? One thing I really like about the SUV is its higher to put also into her seat- but maybe if it was lower she could climb in herself, I don't know.

Also what kind of car does your DH have? Is his bigger for weekend trips when you have more gear?

Not all the time, but we have installed our two rearfacing Foonfs in DH's Audi A4. I'm 5'2" and was able to drive without problem, but DH is 5'6" and it was on the tight side for him. He likes a lot of space for driving, though. The most noticeable difference is other storage space. I drive an Audi Q7 usually and always have our double stroller with us, plus Tulas, blankets, food, water, tons of diapers, jackets. Basically I fill up the entire huge vehicle. In the A4 the car seats take up all the space in the backseat and the trunk is small. So I'd have to downsize all the crap I take with me if I moved into the small car all the time.

Ooh nice! No help, but it does sound like a nice sedan.

How much cargo do you cart around? Do you carry back packs, diaper bags, purses, lunch boxes? Where do you put all that now and where would it go in a car?

From what I've seen as long as there is legroom for the seats and a big truck you should be fine!

I am due to order a new company car (that I also am allowed to use personally). I currently have a midsize SUV (no third seat), and there is a similar option available to order now. But I fell in love with the sedan option, which is a 2016 Volvo S60.

I went and looked at them at the dealership and I don't think the back seat is any smaller than what I have. I will have 2 car seats, 1 Clek Foonf RF and then 1 Clek foonf FF.

Has anyone ever went from an SUV to a sedan with car seats involved? Am I making a mistake?

I should add that I drive a lot for work and my kids are usually only in my car on the weekends. Our nanny does pickup and drop off for my older LO.
