To combat the luggage fee, we packed a BIG luggage vs the small carry-on size for each of us. We fit more and it's still only $25 given you don't exceed the weight limit! But 1-$25 charge vs 2-$25 charge (each way!). They literally have no customer service, if you call you will just get an automated message and no way to actually speak to a live person, we tried for almost a week after our flight was cancelled for no reason and the next one out was the NEXT DAY (and this was an 8:00 am flight that was canceled). They also did not follow through on the miles we were supposed to receive after opening a cc with them but again, couldn't talk to anyone about it. It's about 1/4 of the price from flying out of Toronto. It's not bad, but we didn't have kids when we did it. Baggage fees are super high, but we did have too much on the way home and they didn't make us pay so that was good. In 2011 when we flew with them carry on was free so we did that. This year when we went carry on was like $25 per bag and checked bags were $35. So we just checked one large bag for $35. DH and I still laugh anytime either of us says "Spirit Airlines" because the experience was kind of hilarious when we look back. If you think Southwest has an unusual boarding process, Spirit just has everyone rush the doors of the plane and fight for the seats. There was also an incident on the flight where someone collapsed and none of the flight crew knew first aid so they started reading a gigantic manual while we all worried that the person was dying in the aisle. Finally they asked for a doctor...and had to clarify that they meant "medical doctor". In the end they just left the guy lying in the aisle and people stepped over him. The price difference depends on where we are going... the flight on Spirit to Chicago is only 300$ total, but that also means driving 2 hours to Houston from where we live. That being said... there's a flight out of the town we live in to Chicago, San Diego, or Orange County for anywhere from 550-600$ total.
