@LiliBillie: When I called practices I just said I was early in my first pregnancy and wanted an introduction or orientation to the practice, not a medical appointment. Some had organized group sessions, some would only do a phone interview, and some agreed to private meetings. Depends on the practice, I think. But they shouldn't make you mess with co-pays or anything!

ETA - we decided on a midwifery practice at SLR. I forgot to mention that originally. Seems like you want an OB, though, so I won't get into the details unless you're interested.

@LiliBillie: when i switched obs, i just called and made an appt and said i was pregnant. I met with the doc and then arranged for the transfer of my records. If i hadn't liked the doc, i guess i would've just not gone back! but i didn't do any type of interview kind of meeting with her, as i was pretty confident i would like her based on the reviews of others on this site!

and i'm 30.5 weeks! where did the time go? ;)

@mrsog: So lucky! I want to be further along :)
How do we start a NYC group?

Also, does one know how it works if I just want to meet an OB?
I called and they want to set up a whole transfer right away. But I haven't even met the doctor yet...

I went to the Weill-Cornell practice on West 72nd when I lived in the city and saw Dr. Erica Weinstein. I also know someone who went to Dr. Rhee and recently had a baby. She was very happy with her - also said she was very blunt but didn't sugar-coat things. Good luck with your search and congrats!

I go to Dr. Natalie Stevens on the UES. She is affiliated with Lenox Hill. I will be going to their Center for Maternal-Fetal Medicine on the 22nd for my NT scan so I'll have a better idea of what I'm dealing with then but I've only heard good things so far and I really like my OB.

@LiliBillie: I went to Downtown Women at Prince & Broadway. They deliver at NYU. It is a big group, so there are lots of doctors. Of the 7 or 8 I saw, I only disliked one, which is pretty good!

I also went to the Ob/Gyn practice at Beth Israel. The practice is in Union Square. My primary doctor is Dr. Susan Rothenberg but was with Dr. Theresa Peretta when Dr. Rothenberg went on maternity leave. I delivered by C-section, and that was performed by Dr. Jacqueline Brown. She was ALSO spectacular. I would highly highly recommend the group.

FYI, I was high risk and was at the office every week from 27 weeks on. Everyone was phenomenal!

@SupernovaJ: That's my practice! I'm 36 weeks pregnant and so far very happy with them. I was referred by a coworker and I really like that all of my medical records are available online and the Dr.'s are super responsive to questions and I'm never rushed out of appointments. I also like that it's in a nice area of the city, even though it's a little inconvenient to get to by subway - but still I don't have to go up to harlem or the bronx to see my Dr.!

Lily Wong is awesome and she delivers at St. Luke's Roosevelt (great hospital with a birthing center AND L&D). She's very compassionate and takes time to talk to you (you don't feel rushed). Yet somehow I've also never waited more than 15 minutes for my appt to start. I don't know how they do it but they should share their secret with the rest of NY's obgyns because its usually brutal :-)

I've had 2 miscarriages (Jan and last week). The first one was with Dr. Rachel Kassenoff...DO NOT GO TO HER unless you appreciate blunt, and rushed with little conversation or compassion. I had my first miscarriage with her and she was so dismissive and uncaring, it made the experience that much worse. But I guess some people don't like warm and fuzzy. I switched to Dr. Wong with my latest pregnancy.
Last week I found out I had a missed MC and Dr. Wong was so sweet and understanding. She had no intention of rushing out of the room and she actually seemed equally sad for me. Bedside manner is important to me, though I understand its not important to everyone.

Like @lamariniere said, at some point they start rotating through all the docs in the practice so you get familiar, but I think this is pretty common...every other doc I've seen or friends have seen said the same thing. They want to prepare you in case your doc isn't available for delivery.

I also have a friend who adores Dr. Moritz, also at SLR. I've considered seeing him once next time I'm pregnant just to compare to Wong. My friend says he's also really great and compassionate. She had a MC and he gave her his cell number to call him with any questions! She started naturally miscarrying a week or so later and she got scared and called. He answered and talked her through it. Don't see that every day.

Good luck! (And sorry so long, I just feel strongly about finding a doc you like :-) )

I see Dr. Anna Rhee. She's affiliated with St. Lukes-Roosevelt, and she supports using the in-hospital birthing center (if you are interested in that sort of thing) assuming that you qualify. She (and her practice) also has below average c-section and episiotomy rates. She's a little matter-of-fact which I think has led her to have some mediocre online reviews, but I actually prefer that sort of style since I want my doctor to give things to me straight. I can emote on my own time. So, not sure if her style is for everyone, but I like her. The other doctors in her practice tend to have better online reviews, but I haven't met any of them yet. Like most practices, they rotate being on call so you could get any of their four OBs at your delivery. Her office is on 86th St. just off CPW. I am only 11w1d so I can only speak to my prenatal experience so far.

I went to the Ob/Gyn practice at Beth Isreal and mine was Dr. Theresa Peretta. I looooved her and saw her for several years before getting pregnant. I sent 3-4 different friends to her and they all loved her too. Only problem at BI is that once you are about 5 months along, they start rotating doctors for your check ups since you never know who will be on call when you deliver. I probably saw 6-7 different doctors and I really liked all but maybe one. When I delivered, I had never met the doctor who delivered my baby, but I honestly didn't care. I felt like I had pretty good overall care.

FWIW, I had a very low risk, complication-free pregnancy and delivery.
