Love this! We have a bunch of fruit trees (lemon, lime, fig, persimmon), some herbs and blueberry bushes in our back yard. We also have two small raised beds that I grow fruits and veggies in each year.

This year, I decided to try direct sowing, since I wasn’t sure about the status of our nursery, etc. It has gone well so far, knock on wood! ha. Darn rolly pollies have gotten to some of the seedlings, but we are fending them off, I’ve resown some things, and most seem to be coming up okay.

This year, I’m growing a couple different types of cherry tomatoes, collard greens, sweet peas, snap peas, bell peppers, green pole beans, red Chinese noodle beans, strawberries, zucchini, cucumbers, pumpkins, watermelons, and another type of melon. Excited to see what works!

I started hardening off my squash (day 3) The weather's been wonky this spring -- warm one day, cold and really windy the next. I snagged a pack of garden cloches before the pandemic and so happy I have them, even though I'm not exactly sure what I'm planting in them.

No tomatoes this year since I lost my lot to bacterial wilt early on. But fingers crossed, the squash and pumpkins make it OK.

I just sowed my sweat peas today and will be working on planting some runner beans and morning glories once I see a clear weather forecast.

 Thanks to the frost this weekend I need to replant our tomatoes / cherry tomatoes and most of the peppers. That's the last time I plant before mother's day!

We did cucumbers, tomatoes and herbs last year. Since that was a success, this year I've added carrots, radishes, lettuce and cabbage. My radishes and carrots and lettuce are all in the ground and doing well. Cucumbers just went in but with the frost might try again if my drop cloth didn't keep them warm enough. Tomatoes I'll wait another week or so since here they don't do great until consistently warm. I'm amazed how much I can put in with a pretty small space. And the kids are loving checking on things.

I have a garden every year. This year, I worried about being able to get bedding plants, so I started a bunch back in March. Tomatoes, cucumbers, zinnias, cosmos, english daisies. They are almost ready to go out. We’ve got freezing temps at night until Wednesday. The rest of the garden can be direct seeded (peas, carrots, lettuce, potatoes).

We are trying out starting some produce from seeds this year. Tomatoes and sugar snap peas have done well and are outside in containers now. We just started cucumbers, and they are sprouting quickly. Our strawberry seedlings are coming along, but so slowly! If we get the plants outside by the 4th of July I will be surprised. :silly: Ah well, I don't know what I'm doing anyway . . .

We also bought 3 raspberry bushes this year!

@gotkimchi: Our garden is probably 30 x 12 ft. I use newspaper around each plant to keep the weeds down, and then we use glass clippings as mulch.

Yes, we always have a garden and this year I COVID-panic planted even more than usual. Still too cold here to move the tomato seedlings, etc. out but we're getting there.

@Mrs. Champagne: 5 chickens is perfect for a family of 4. Chickens are so easy. What’s your climate like? We’ve used a dog cage for a coop when they were small and now we converted a small shed into a coop + a small wood coop my uncle built. But yah you just make sure they have food and water and they’re good to go. When they’re babies my kids take care of them.

Backyard chickens is a popular site. I don’t actually think we did much research we just went for it lol

@gotkimchi: I have so many questions about egg hens but don’t know where to start. Haha. Do you have a website or book you’d recommend? We are in a small town, not huge huge lot, but our size allows chickens. We can have up to 5, no roosters.

We are gardening. We garden every year and originally planned to take this year off so we could do some other things this summer. But with the way things are now we decided to do a scaled back garden since we will be home. Our scaled back garden is still a decent size.

@josina: Sometimes if we need to do a chicken quick we just skin it. Then you don’t need to pluck and if you don’t care about eating the skin it’s perfect. Might be an option if you want to have chicken meat

@gotkimchi: Yes, we live in the country and have a small barn. My DH has all the equipment to do our own processing also.
We've done meat chickens in the past - but I can't handle the smell/plucking, so not doing that again, lol.

We planted a week early this year and OF COURSE it's freezing tonight.
We planted tomatoes, cherry tomatoes, kale, spinach, bell peppers, jalapeno peppers, banana peppers, cucumber, pumpkins, and will plant zucchini and peas once I find some.

Its a little more than usual but not overly. We did get some laying hens this year also, we've had them on/off in the past but nice to always have eggs! We also have a beef cow we are raising for meat (we do this yearly but it will be extra nice this year with the meat shortage!)

I’ve got strawberries out, peas, fruit trees and some fruit bushes like raspberry blueberry and blackberry. It’s supposed to freeze tonight 🙄

We also raise our own meat chickens, turkeys and ducks and those will be arriving in a few weeks.

Anyone else doing any gardening/homesteading this year? Feels more timely then ever
