It was either go to glasses full time or get LASIK so I did the LASIK. I did the punctal plugs but they just kept coming out. I did all the eye drops and the vitamins. I think the best thing was not wearing contacts for a while (I had had mine since 7th grade). Also, any allergy meds will also dry out your eyes so stop those of possible. Also, make sure to blink a lot...they did studies and a person blinks an average of x times a minute (can't remember but it's like 35)...watching tv reduces it by half or more...working a computer it was in the single digits...and blinks refreshes your tears so years working in front of a computer is terrible for dry eyes. AHHH!!! I've been wearing contacts every single day, all day, for 18 years so this is a bit of a shocker and a lifechanging moment. I've been wearing glasses every day for the past month and even though my eyes have adjusted, the news of not being able to wear contacts anymore got me seriously depressed. I might as well throw away all of my eye makeup and stock up on a ton of astringents... and throw away all of my sunglasses. And stock up on eyeglass cleaner because my lenses are always touching my skin and getting greasy and so annoying.</p> <p>Grr.</p> <p>Anyway, the good news is that she thinks I will probably be a candidate for lasik. I have a crazy prescription (-9.5 in one eye, -8 in the other, with mild astigmatism) which fluctuated with both pregnancies, but I'm pretty sure I'm done with kids and breastfeeding. She measured my corneas and said I have abnormally thick ones, so that's a great thing considering the strength of my prescription. I'm going to continue to treat my dry eye to get it totally managed before my consult with the lasik doctor in a month, because they won't consider you for lasik if you have any dry eye at all. They will probably put in punctal plugs with the procedure considering my history of dry eye... and I will probably get worse dry eye afterwards, but since I'm using FOUR kinds of drops every day anyway, it won't be much of a change to treat that. </p> <p>Now to figure out insurance, HSA, and payment plans... ahhhh. Best money I've ever spent.</p> <p>The only side effect is dry eyes, but a drop in each eye first thing when I wake up and I'm good for the day. My era were really bad bf so I had a higher chance of needing and adjustment after, and I do need glasses for driving and things like PowerPoint presentations now, but its still so worth it.
