Nope. We have a shaggy WHITE rug and we've kept it! Main thing is b/c we put down a baby mat so most of the rug is covered.

We replaced our rug for this very reason when E started crawling - then my friend's toddler projectile vomited over the new rug so we had to throw it away! We've resorted to buying the cheap rugs from Ikea (£30 each) so we can replace them regularly.

We need a new rug ... do you happen to know where the rug in your photo is from??

We had a super shaggy rug from birth-25 months. When LO was putting everything in her mouth, we'd just put a blanket down on top of the rug. I loved it ... but our cat just peed on it, so it's gotta go. :( I think a rug like the one you have in the original post is a great idea. It looks light enough that you could take it outside & beat the dust out every few months.

We got a new one because our old one was very old and even after vacuuming I didn't feel like it was clean enough. Of course the new one left carpet fuzz on all my pants for months but better that than years of dirt. It was a pretty inexpensive regular wool one so we won't be devastated if it gets stained or ruined but is soft (which was key for a baby learning to walk and roll over and such).

One more thought - we have an indoor/outdoor rug for LO's room, which is awesome because it's pretty hard to damage and super easy to clean. Might be an option? We got ours from Pier 1 (http://www.pier1.com/Fish-School-Rug---5x8/2895101,default,pd.html) but they have plenty that aren't patterned and could work well in a living room.

We used a foam mat for a while, but it drove me crazy. The animals peeled off (it was a skip hop zoo), then my kids learned they could take it apart, so there were constantly pieces missing and floating around the house. After that we were rug free for almost a year. This Christmas we got a tumbling/gym mat for the living room. It's not exactly HGTV material, but it does keep my kids somewhat safe while launching themselves off their anywhere chairs, and it's easy to clean.

@agold: I was thinking of something low pile that we can shake out or vacuum more easily.

@simplyfelicity: I would get rid of your rug. But the same issues you have with your current rug will occur fast enough with your new rug unless you get rid of your dog and implement a no-shoe policy in your house.

We have carpet in our house that is old and nasty. DD is starting to roll around/creep but we just got it professionally cleaned. Although we plan on replacing our carpet in the next few months. Also we have 2 dogs so lots of fur everywhere!

I'd probably replace it with something cheap while you have little ones - you can maybe bring it back out in a few years when they're not face-planting and rolling around on it. :)

This is probably the most boring question in HB history, but...

Our house is mostly hardwoods so we put down a high pile shag (prebaby.) Problem is, dog hair and dirt gets trapped in it and no matter how much I vacuum, it's still gross.
Did you take out the rug or replace it with something low pile?

I was thinking of something like this.
