When LO was putting everything in her mouth, we'd just put a blanket down on top of the rug. I loved it ... but our cat just peed on it, so it's gotta go. :( I think a rug like the one you have in the original post is a great idea. Of course the new one left carpet fuzz on all my pants for months but better that than years of dirt. Might be an option? The animals peeled off (it was a skip hop zoo), then my kids learned they could take it apart, so there were constantly pieces missing and floating around the house. After that we were rug free for almost a year. This Christmas we got a tumbling/gym mat for the living room.
