I know this is an old thread, but I wanted to add my experience for anyone else considering it.

My eight month old had gone to many night wakeups, and was sleeping very badly in her crib. Moving around a lot, banging against the bars. We'd always go in and find her smooshed up in a corner and furious about it.

A montessori style floor bed had always been the plan, so we just decided to start sooner. We use a futon on the floor - only about 5 inches off the ground, and firm. No worries if she rolls right off. She'd been napping in there for a while, so she was used to it a little. Totally baby proofed the room, and just put her down in it one night. Worked like magic - it really seems to have eliminated the waking up from knocking around the crib. She sleeps pretty well in it.

And as a bonus, it's easy to nurse or just snuggle her to sleep. When I'm tired too, I can just lay down and nap with her. It is just a wonderful idea.

We did at 1 year. She's in a full queen sized bed on the floor. We just felt she slept better. I put appropriate (firm, high) pillows to barricade her in.

We gave up the crib at around a year. He was growing too tall for it (he was above the 99th percentile in height) and was getting really uncomfortable. So we transitioned him to a floor bed (full sized mattress on the floor) and haven't turned back. He loves it. He actually WANTS to go to bed (can you imagine that!). Right now we have the mattress surrounded by a plastic play yard fence (so it's essentially a HUGE crib). But we'll eventually be removing the fence and let him just sleep on the mattress by himself (Montessori style).

I actually just said this morning that I am considering going the montessori route with our almost 8 month old. She has a queen bed in her room now and loves it. Only thing I worry about is that its a memory foam mattress and not a baby mattress, so I will probably wait until 11 or 12 months and see how she does for a few nights.

DS moves a lot in his sleep. NO matter how/where in the cri I lay him down, he always has his head, face-down crammed into a corner. I think even if we put a full size mattress on the floor, he'd end up in a corner somewhere in the room.

We're trying out giving up the crib with our 6 month old. He's just not happy in it, bangs around and doesn't sleep well. I think a lot of it is the size (it's handmade, thus smaller) and the mattress is very firm (he sleeps like a well...baby...in our bed) so he had a daybed in his room already (no where else to put it) and he's sleeping on it right now for his nap. We'll have to do a little safety proofing on it since we aren't going to go for the full Montessori set-up.

Anyone else run into honest crib issues and went another route?
