Thanks everyone for the advice! I'm hoping this will only be an occasional thing since she only goes to the vet 2-3 times per year. We'll test it out tomorrow and see how she reacts. Luckily it won't need to be a daily medicine

We had to put my cat on Xanax after our LO arrived because she was peeing on everything my husband owned. Not sure why, but she blamed him for her world being upended, haha. We gave it to her for about month and it got us through the period of her adjusting to having a baby in the house, and the behavior didn't return when we quit the meds.

Another option if you don't want to do Xanax is ask your vet about Calm Down (I think that's the name...). Our vet suggested it for our cat when we had to take her on a flight.

Not exactly, but we have given the equivalent of prozac and wellbutrin, lol. Both worked fine and the dogs only had to stay on the doses for a short while.

@mrs. bird: Yeah I do think I'll look into another vet- it certainly can't hurt anything. I don't think my dog has a difference between men and women. There are two vets in our practice and they are a man and a woman. She's awful with both of them. I'm pretty sure it has to do with her "protecting" my husband or I. If they need to take her away from us to the back to do anything, she usually calms down just a little. We haven't raised her to be a protector but when I got her I lived by myself and she really did go everywhere with me so I think she just picked up on it. At this point I'm not sure how to break the habit.

@HappyBluebird: I would second @Happygal: 's suggestion to try another vet. Your vet may be great, but they may not be great with your dog. I don't have a dog, but one of my cats got a black mark & was said to need extra staff for handling after an incident with the owner of the clinic, but his wife (she's also a vet at the clinic) can handle him without gloves & hasn't had any issues. Do you find your dog is more aggressive with males or females? My old work pup could only see female staff & they would have the dog stay in the car, then the staff would walk the dog in alone because otherwise she would go into protection mode. It was seeing staff come near us that would upset her. I don't think the meds are the worst thing, but there might be an alternative if you're not comfortable with giving them.

@Happygal: It is definitely something I need to think about. I think I'll start researching some other vets in the area. Overall I like the practice and I do think they are knowledgeable and care for my dog like they should but they think that my dog is super stressed out all the time and that it isn't fair on her. I don't know how to convince them that every where else she truly is the laziest dog!

Maybe trying out a new vet would be worthwhile, thanks!

@HappyBluebird: I hope the meds do the trick! I think I felt guilty b/c I had read all this stuff about counter conditioning them to be good for handling. But it was too much.

May I also recommend looking into finding a different vet? This is the 3rd vet for our dog! The other two were overwhelmed by her, and once they were going to give up and not give her the vaccinations she was due for. I asked a dog trainer in town for a vet recommendation and told her I felt badly for switching once again, but she said that not every vet is right for every dog. The vet we go to now is known for being gentle and very good with dogs like mine. She is always reassuring and willing to take her time to make things as low stress as possible.

@Bubbles: Oh my! My dog has a black mark too (my cousin used to work there so he told me)....I was so ashamed! :silly: I guess the vet just sets certain animals over the edge! I'll update this thread tomorrow evening and let you know if it works

Good luck with the apt! I would love something like this for my cat - he goes feral at the vets! He's pretty chill normally but at the vets his rage cannot be contained! He's even got like a black mark against his vet history now and I am no longer allowed appointments at the weekend because there needs to be 2 vets present to wrangle him! :silly:

@Happygal: @yerpie110: @Eko: @hotchildinthecity: Thanks ladies! I feel better giving it to her since it seems to be ok for other dogs/cats.

As for DH taking her, he gets more anxious then I do! At first I was just embarrassed by the way she acted but then the vet made me feel like we were doing something wrong. I don't think she believes me when I say she's not like that outside of the vet's office. She's that bad!

I've tried taking her for a really long walk before the vet so she's tired but as soon as we get there it's like she finds all this reserved energy! I've also tried those OTC calming sprays, still nothing. I'm really at the end of my rope in things I can try. If I didn't feel guilty about not taking her, I would just stop going all together. But I know that's not right or fair.

Fingers crossed this works! I'm picking up the medicine from the pharmacy tonight and her appointment is tomorrow evening! Wish me luck!

We give it to my cat daily. She was becoming violent and attacking my other cat constantly. It has literally been a life changer. We were having to seriously talk about rehoming Her because things were getting so bad. Now she is a gentle And calm cat. Worked great for us.

My mom has her dog on daily doses of Xanax. My mom adopted her boxer and from day one it was evident that she was beaten in her old household, so she gets very anxious at new people and unfamiliar situations. It does make the dog lethargic, but being lethargic makes the dog seem more normal. Again, the dog is just in a constant state of high-anxiety, so that's why she is on it.

I would agree with @happygal and maybe try some alternatives if you aren't as comfortable giving the medication. You can even talk to your vet about some alternatives methods to help resolve the problem.

We give our dog an anti-anxiety pill everytime before he gets groomed. He his HORRIBLE without it (growling, snarling, won't stay still, etc.) and we think he must have had some trauma as a baby before we adopted him at 8 months. I don't know the exact name of the drug, but he takes a quarter (he is only 12lbs) and it helps be calmer and he does appear somewhat lethargic and groggy to me while he's on it.

I agree with @Happygal: as well, taking him to the vet/groomers/get shots causes me tremendous anxiety (i literally dread November when he's due for annual shots), so now DH just takes our dog alone because it doesn't bother him, and it has worked out better for everyone.

Yes, we've given her some kind anti-anxiety drug. I felt so weird about it in the beginning. I still don't like giving it to her for some reason, but she gets way stressed out at the vet, nail trimmings, and baths. The drugs help. She does get very calm and sleepy.

Another thought for you: the last time we had to take her into the vet, I didn't go. I try so hard to be calm, but I get really stressed b/c I know she's going to be scared and pitiful, so I definitely am adding to the problem b/c dogs pick up on that type of thing. My vet was the one who mentioned trying having just my husband or someone handing her off to be examined without us there. That might be worth a shot as well!

Does anyone have any experience with giving your dog Xanax prescribed by the vet?

My dog is an absolute terror at the vet. She will bark non stop from the moment we step into the building until the moment we step outside. From what we understand, she gets stressed and then feels like she needs to protect my husband or I from the mean scary vet. Outside of the vet she does not go crazy, she's the laziest dog ever. She is not mean and has never bitten at anyone in the office but I do not want it to ever escalate to that point so I asked the vet if there was any medication we could try. She called in a prescription for Xanax.

I get a little worried giving my pet new medicine but at this point for everyone's sanity I am willing to give it a try.

I want to know of anyone who has experience with this. I know every dog is different but was your dog groggy or lethargic? Did it not work at all?

Thanks!
