@Raindrop: She is not that bad... In the beginning I think she was stricter to make sure I know what I'm doing. Last time I went she barely looked at my log.

@snowjewelz: Wow your OB seems super strict! My OB said 1-2 spikes a week is okay. Which is probably why I feel comfortable experimenting. :)

@Raindrop: That's great! Right now w/ GD I can't risk getting a bad # and having my OB yell at me or jeopardizing me or the baby... I guess afterwards at least I'm not affecting another human being inside of me. Also I am assuming that right now the placenta is making it way worse so even if I develop diabetes it should be milder than what it is now....

@snowjewelz: Quote "I didn't know I the last time I had a venti mocha was the very last time?! Or when I had a slice of pizza? Or a yummy slice of cake w/ icecream?! Ahhh! "

You can have these things! :) Just less of it. I recently found out that I can have half a tall caramel latte without affecting my numbers... or half a slice of pizza with a salad or 5 bites of cake with 2 spoonfuls of ice cream. :)

I know it's not as satisfying as having a whole portion but it helps me get rid of that craving.

@snowjewelz: Yeah, my dad is diabetic but he wasn't diagnosed until he was over 50 and he is quite overweight...so I'm really hoping the GD didn't stick around as regular diabetes. Part of me just doesn't even want to be tested...I'm like you, I want to just be in denial! But I suppose that's not really a good idea. Sigh.

@snowjewelz: It definitely sucks to have to worry about it. My mom has had it for a while so my brother and I have always had it in the back of our minds. Her life style was very rough though so she got it early because of stress (lots of stress) and bad diet.

I just wanted to mention my father in law has borderline one at 80 and he has a bad sweet tooth, so despite his life style he got it pretty late... :) So you can totally be not on top of it and still get it pretty late in life. Haha.

@Snowdrop: @HLK208: That is hopeful news! My dad is borderline diabetic but he's already 60 and I don't think anyone else in my family has it.

I mean I'm not gonna go all nuts and eat carbs & sugar all day long; it's just the thought of raising a baby & having to deal with diabetes does not sound fun!

Nope. My doctor said it was just pregnancy that made me intolerant to glucose (my numbers were normal after delivery). There's no history of diabetes in my family either.

I believe you only get it right away if you had undiagnosed diabetes before getting pregnant. Other than that you will probably not get it for a LONG while after pregnancy but yes you are more prone to it in the future.

With that, you would have probably been prone to it anyways but now you know and knowing is half the battle. My nurse said you can out run it with diet and exercise... some day you will get it but you can delay it and maybe it won't catch you till you are 60 or older. :)

I'm being tested for this in about 2 weeks and am quite nervous about it! My doctor did tell me that it's uncommon but more likely to happen if your GD was serious, like if you needed insulin, which wasn't the case for me. She also said that some studies have shown that breastfeeding for at least 6 months reduces that heightened risk of developing type 2 diabetes later in life. I don't know why that is, but it's worth a try!

I got tested 8 weeks pp and based on the results I was recommended to an endocrinologist. Turns out I'm insulin resistant. But based on family history I wasn't surprised. Basically, diet and exercise can help that.

I didn't (after #1), but I will be tested 6 weeks pp since this is my second round. With my first I was just tested for a couple days in the hospital, but didn't do the whole glucose tolerance testing and A1C post-partum.

My OB also recommends that I have my A1C checked every 6 months now just to be sure.

I didn't, but I worried about that!

I think it's not so much that you get GD and then you're stuck with it — it's moreso that you may have had undiagnosed diabetes before you got pregnant, but I could be wrong.

I thought for a while (and maybe people said) that GD goes away after birth, but apparently you can get stuck with type 2 diabetes after when the test you 6-12 weeks pp? And I read something that said women who had GD are more likely to develop diabetes in general... Just wondering if anyone has any experience/insight! I'm def gonna ask about OB this week.
