I did not have birth photography but knew I'd want some photos after at least. But I also had an unmedicated labor... I remember trying to braid my hair before we left for the hospital and just saying f--- it and we left. I was in and out of the shower and tub throughout labor so my hair was a hot mess. I burst blood vessels in my face from pushing so hard. So if you are planning to try unmedicated be aware that you may end up in water or whatever anyway. I assume if you have an epidural it might be a little better in terms of maintaining makeup, maybe.

But even though I was a hot mess, the grainy, dim, iPhone photo of me holding my new baby after she was born is my very favorite and is still the background on my phone 3 years later. So whatever you look like or don't look like I am sure you will treasure the pictures.

I didn't have professional photos done but I knew I would have my photo taken and wanted to have a little makeup on. I labored overnight and woke up complete. I labored down for an hour and my husband helped my brush my hair and teeth, and put on a little makeup. I still look tired in the photos right after DD was born. I would do the same again though.

I had birth photography done and went au naturale. I don't normally wear makeup anyhow and the photography was to capture photos in the moment and DH's reaction when he saw the kiddo/cut the cord/held them, etc..

@looch: I usually do a "damp laurel" style before bed, and the next morning it's messy curls. But yes, I think that would work!!

Thoughts on covering up hideous pregnancy acne?

What if you braided your hair while wet...would it be loose curls when you take it out later?

@stiletto_mom: TBH falsies will likely come loose. Mine always do after 10 hours of anything- and birth is not part of my usual full makeup activities.

Thanks for all the input. I may even forgo the falsies and just go with something halfway decent for my hair before hand.

Yup. My good friend is a photographer and she came right into the OR with my husband and I. The surgical team said they loved having people take pictures, and were very accommodating. A lot of them were too graphic for me to look at at first, but the ones of me seeing my daughter, our skin to skin in the OR- priceless.

@LulaBee: oh, you did for a c-section? My first ended in one and I think I'll have to have a repeat. I didn't know people had them done in surgery.

I had birth photography done for my second (planned C-section). I really only wear makeup to work, and did not have it on, had my hair in a messy bun. They're some of my favorite pictures ever. I look my myself (a very bloated version of myself).

@stiletto_mom: I am a very non makeup-y person as is. My doula also took photos. Not a photographer per-se, but she has a nice camera and was there.
I definitely did not have the forethought to put on makeup while in labor. And the pictures always look better in black and white anyway. And your hair gets all kinds of crazy, too.
If it was a scheduled thing, maybe I would but 90% likely that I would not.

Haven't had it done, but wanted to say that I love birth photography. It's beautiful. I think minimal makeup is what you want especially as that is how you usually appear. Besides, it isn't meant to capture you looking nice your best, it's meant to capture the birth and all aspects of it (or whatever you want captured). I have never noticed what the woman actually looked like in the pics, just felt the emotion.

I had birth photography. I gave no thought to what I would look like. I had an emergency induction so I went in with the basic daily makeup I wear. After almost 2 days in labor there was nothing left. I did fix myself up a little but before doing a few photos with the babe- so there was not mascara under my eyes.

Those of you who have had birth photography done, did you do hair/makeup?

I'm a natural girl and I don't usually wear any makeup or do my hair on a daily basis. When I go out, I stick on some falsies and that's about it.

If I were to do birth photography, I don't want to have to worry about "looking perfect". I want to document the journey of my first birth, but I also don't want to look a complete mess.

Do you think I'll be okay with just falsies and like a messy bun/pony? Something low-maintenance?
