I agree it also depends a bit on the kind of bike you have.

We have a seat that sits behind me. I like it, but it does make the back a bit heavy. Now that shes taller she likes it because she can see well.

We have a rear mount Hamax seat. We started dear son in the front mount iBert, but I felt way too off balance and unstable with him on it after just a few months. You will get much more longevity out of a rear mount seat and, depending on the model, it can be used for quite some time.

As for trailers, I have personally never tried one. We live in a city and while I do see people using them here, the idea makes me very uncomfortable.

The family I work for has a Burley one and they love it (the kids and the parents). My husband and I are looking at bikes and it was one of the things I asked about at the bike shop this weekend. The man there said he finds the trailers way safer (I don't know if this is actually true.) A big plus is the ability to store things in the bike trailer-- like produce from the farmer's market. The kids have a cupholder and can take a toy in the trailer too.

My SIL has a seat that goes in front of the normal bike seat, so the baby is in front of her and she absolutely loathes is. You have to ride frog legged to be able to pedal because where your knees would go up, they hit the seat.

I would say something behind you for sure.. I think we'll be a bike trailer family..they have some at Target!

I have a Burly D-lite, and I love it. We ride around a ton. I'd like to get a seat for my bike and leave the trailer for my husband, but it works beautifully. It's more effort to pull, but not much.

I've been doing a lot of reading on trailers vs handlebar seats vs behind the bike seat. There doesn't seem to be one that is obviously better than the other, and it seems to depend on so many things.

I'd like to use it for weekend bike rides (on trails/paths) and maybe biking to the farmer's market or any nearby destination.

Does anyone have one? Any comments on your experiences?
