@mrstilly: I havent tried the ipad thing yet...maybe Ill give that a try next time we're in the car. I do ride in back, and it makes it worse because she just expects me to get her out. She immediately stops when I take her out, but the second she realizes she is going back in, its all over. And its not fussing. It is full blown purple faced, raw throat when she is done, cant even converse with other people in the car because its so loud SCREAMING.

DS hates to be strapped into anything, but usually settles once we get moving. He's had phases where he is calmer and more easily distracted in the carseat or in the stroller, and phases where he is more cranky.

Typically I would advise anyone not to turn the carseat around, since the safety benefits to your LO if you are in an accident while the are rear facing are HUGE. Their spinal columns are just not formed well enough at that age to handle a front impact collision, which most accidents are.

But, if your LO is really distracting you and is screaming/crying as opposed to fussing, you are probably more likely to be get into an accident. Have you tried a DVD player? I know they make things to strap iPads and portable DVD players to the head rests, and maybe that would help LO while in the car.

I remember when DS was really little and was screaming while in the carseat. I was so anxious as a new mom and would be really agitated until I could pull over to get DS out of the seat and calm him down, usually by changing his diaper and nursing him. DH was really worried I would get into an accident trying to pull over quickly. It was really hard to listen to DS scream while I tried to find a safe place to pull over.

Also, does it help if you or your partner ride in the back with LO during longer rides, or whenever you are driving together? That helped DS in the first few months.

@looch: yep. I only ride in the back now (and Ive tried switching back to the front too.) still the same screaming. If anything it makes it a little worse because shes like "WHY ARENT YOU GETTING ME OUT OF HERE!? WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU?!" lol

@LivsMama: have you tried sitting in the back with her if your husband is driving? I don't have any other suggestions, my son never really complained in the car.

@chopsuey119: yep, two. One plain one thats oversized so she can see us and we can see her, and another one thats surrounded by an elephant and stuff. She likes to play with that one as long as its not IN HER SEAT lol. So frustrating!!! =o)

@Mrs. Bee: sounds like Im going to have to turn her. I considered trying it this past weekend to see but then I realized it wasnt safe and that we'd have to turn it back around, so why bother. Someone else did mention to me once that their kid got very carsick facing backwards and turning them fixed it. They never knew he was sick though until he could vocalize it because he never threw up.

charlie hated the car seat until we let him face forward at one year. now that he can see what's going on, he can sit there and then usually falls asleep!

@LivsMama: Do you have a mirror set up so she can look at herself and you can see her too? I got a plain mirror and decorated it by hot gluing little animals and butterflies to it. She loves it!

LO's likes the car, but now she arches her back and cries a little when we put her in after playing at the park or having a play date!
She just turned 1 and is about 22.5lbs and 30.5inches so we have her forward facing now! :P

@LivsMama: i found it that it only got slightly better once my LO could climb into the seat herself. then it was HER making the choice to get strapped in versus me making her. i read somewhere to strap in a favorite doll or stuffed animal of your LO's to show them that it is fun to sit in the seat. maybe give that a try?

Oh no! That's a tough one. Our LO went through periods of loving/hating his car seat. Unfortunately the only thing that worked for us was to turn him forward facing. But we did this at around 18 months. Before that, we did what you're doing, just schedule long drives around his naps. =\

@Andrea: she throws a fit while she is being strapped in, but stops once we get going. I think that is Livs deal - she hated being strapped in, which is why she arches. And when we're driving, she is clearly struggling to get out of her seat, so its obvious she hates being confined. Its frustrating

That does sound rough. I would turn the seat around and see if that helps. We did it at a year since my LO was crying while seated rear facing. The LO still really hates getting strapped in so that is another daily battle but she is usually OK once we are moving. Does your LO like the stroller? My LO hates the stroller as well. She doesn't like geting strapped into anything. We stopped using the stroller soon after she started walking.

Wow, that's rough! LO used to cry in her carseat, but only when we weren't moving. She'd be fine until we hit a red light. Hope you find a solution!

So from the day we brought Liv home from the hospital, she has HATED her car esat whether its in or out of the car, but ESPECIALLY in the car. We recently switched her over to aconvertible seat (Britax) that I was hoping would fix the issue since she isnt all that reclined anymore and its more spacious, but the seond we put her in, she arches her back and screams bloody murder, and doesnt stop until she gets back out. We have to plan long trips around her sleep schedule, meaning we almost always leave after her bedtime so she doesnt know she's been moved. But she screamed on one road trip for 3.5 hours straight. Its to the point where I think its dangerous to be driving with her screaming so hard because we're so distracted by it. She struggles to turn around and see us and kicks and throws stuff. She has a mirror to see us and has plenty of toys. Shes just inconsolable.

I know the recommendation for rear-facing is 2 years old, but Im really considering turning her around at a year to see if it settles her at all. I cant keep driving with the screaming because it REALLY takes my focus off the road and makes me frazzled.

Anyone have any tips or advice?
