@Foodnerd81: yes, she recommended Neutrogrena Sheer Zinc, but to be fair she wasn’t familiar with the Badger brand.

In case you were following along. It’s official I was outside way too much. I’m still flaring with the best of them! The dermatologist was a little shocked how much of my skin was covered in red patches that wasn’t actually exposed when I was outdoors. She asked if I had worn a bikini. Anyway- topical steroid cream for 3 weeks, allergy medicine twice a day for a week and a switch to some new products because clearly I have way, way sensitive skin.

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: Sorry you're dealing with this :( I'm just chiming in to echo that this sounds like something other than a sunscreen reaction. My middle DD reacted to Blue Lizard (I was so annoyed, because I was trying to be good and get what the dermatologist instead of cheap mass market brands) - it was a much shorter reaction time (like 30 to 90 mins after applying), and her skin just turned very red where I'd applied it, as if she had gotten a sunburn. I tried it one more time, thinking maybe I just hadn't reapplied quickly enough, but the same thing happened. It was back to Waterbabies for her! But hives...that sound more likely to be a reaction to something environmental or ingested than a contact rash

@peachykeen: @KT326: as the day worn on I don’t think it’s the sunscreen at all. I have welts all over my body. @Iced Tea: no, new meds, but I did use a Shea Moisture shampoo & conditioner sample on Sunday so the day between the sunscreen and when the welts appeared. I’ve changed quite a few things lately and maybe something there is having a somewhat delayed reaction to my skin. The hair products dripping in the shower would make the most sense as to why I have welts all over now. Or it could be heat rash.

LO even noticed my boo boos on my chest this evening, so this must look horrid.

Have you taken any medications lately that might cause sensitivity to the sun, or even a delayed drug reaction?

Two years ago I had a horrific reaction just as I was finishing a round of antibiotics for strep. I didn't read the insert that said it could make you sensitive to the sun, and I spent a day at the pool. That night I broke out in hives that ended up covering my entire body and did not respond to anything (antihistamines, steroids, etc.). I had them for 6 weeks! The doctor says they could have been a delayed drug reaction or a photosensitive reaction.

When I reacted to a sunscreen it was within hours after applying. Red rash over every place that I used it. I have pretty sensitive skin and only use babyganics.

If you didn't notice it until a full day later it seems strange for a reaction to take that long to develop, but who knows! We have had good luck with Babyganics and ThinkSport sunscreens with our eczema-prone baby. Maybe try those?

@Foodnerd81: haha, I showed my bff a pic of LO playing in a splashground a couple weeks ago and it was surreal for her. She’s in the NE all bundled up and we’re back in the land of palm trees! :silly:

@Lahela017: yes! A bad skin reaction is super rough. I have an appt set with a derm in a couple days and I will take a few pics in case I actually improve by then. Thankfully, my Cetaphil moisturizer with SPF 15 is still treating me ok.

Yes, I've had reactions like that to all sorts of sunscreen. I'm going to work with an allergist to try to figure some of it out this summer, but even had horrible reactions to Vanicream sunscreen. No advise other than to just try some different brands with different ingredients, but wanted to say I totally understand the frustration!!

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: I’ve heard for some people the mineral sunscreens just aren’t enough protection- though personally I haven’t had that problem, but I’m usually not out in the sun for so long that it would be a major problem anyway since usually someone has to come in for a nap or rest or whatever anyway. Last time I had a day to myself in the sun I still used chemical sunscreens on my body.

Also- we currently have about a foot of snow so it feels SO WEIRD to be talking about sunburns. :silly:

@Foodnerd81: now I’m not so sure, my back is itchy too and sure enough welts there too.

I spent a lot of time outside this weekend and t may just be sunburn. 🥵 Not totally uncommon for me.

@lamariniere: thanks, I’ll check out the ingredients. If it is the sunscreen Zion oxide is what I will have to stay away from.

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: we’ve used a couple of different brands. Lately we’ve been using one by La Roche Posay for kids. We also had one a few months ago by Bioré and it was wonderful, not greasy at all, it smelled nice, and the tube said it was coral safe.

It’s definitely not a sunburn, right? Like the sunscreen didn’t work?

I’ve had bad reactions to chemical sunscreens but not like you described. Mine is just extreme stinging on my face with I use oxybenzone.

@lamariniere: what worked for your kids? @Ms. RV: I was trying to be environmentally safe with my sunscreen pick and chose one from Hawaii’s approved list for protecting coral reef. I’m crazy itchy and this is so uncomfortable though. Funny enough in all my Google search the brand I chose comes up as an alternative for a bad reaction to a traditional sunscreen. It took me 4-5 articles to finally find that said Badger may be the problem and not a solution. :silly:

One of my nieces had a similar reaction to sunscreen. Oddly enough she has to use a cheap brand (NO-AD) to avoid adverse reactions. Well, other stuff might work, but when they tried this it worked so they stuck with it.

I’ve had reactions to other kinds of body creams and my LOs have had similar reactions to sunscreen like what you are describing. For them, it was always generic store brand sunscreens that daycare would use, so I sent our own sunscreen and the problem stopped.

I’m trying to rule out a possible sunscreen allergy. Has anyone here used Badger natural sunscreen on themselves and broken out in welts? Based on where the welts are neck, back of neck and arms it’s the only thing I can think of. I am trying a new deodarant- Degree. Badger and Degree are the only two new things in my skincare/ hygiene routine. I used Badger twice- last week to go swimming on a partially sunny day. Then two days ago to walk around at a Farmers market where there was a lot of sun. I felt the welts a day later after my shower when I was putting on lotion and noticed how red they were.

So far Google confirms a rash is a possible reaction even with natural sunscreen, but doesn’t go as far as welts. I don’t have a dermatologist yet, but will find one. Thankfully, LO’s skin appears fine.
