I had this done a long time ago. I such terrible dread in advance of the procedure that you'd think Hitler had risen from the dead and opened a death camp in my backyard. It was not the best 10 minutes of my life but trust me that it was not worth the level of anguish I put myself through. You will be ok.

Same as PP...I've probably had 5 or 6, with one cryo procedure to freeze off the bad stuff. It was super scary the first time but now it's like now big deal. I don't want to make light of it, because it's definitely okay to be nervous, but just know that the odds are in your favor and it's great that you are getting it taken care of and looked at now before it develops into something worse!! Good luck and keep us updated

Ditto! My colposcopy results came back normal but I went for pap smears every 3 months thereafter, just to be sure. Like @ms.janedoe: said, the biopsy part is a pinch. It did result in pretty sucky cramping after so take some Ibuprofen before, just in case, and have regular underwear and a pad.

I've had 2. The colposcopy itself is fine (they just look), if you have anything biopsied though, it can kind of suck. It isn't horrible, just a quick pinching pain, but you'll feel it! Mine kept coming back abnormal, so I go in every 6 months for repeat paps.

Add me to the list of been there, done that and it turned out to be no big deal.

I've had 3 colposcopies and a LEEP. For some reason my body takes longer to heal itself from the abnormal pap-causing cells. (Only one has been due to HPV). After each one, I went for a re-pap in 6 months and it was gone. I just make sure to get it done on time and my doctor said I'm obviously not a good candidate for following the new every 3 year pap guideline.

In all likelihood, you will be just fine. Even if you do end up needing a LEEP, you probably caught it early enough to avoid serious issues. I was surprised to hear my OB/GYN say that abnormal paps are pretty common.

I had two colposcopies in college, and ended up having a LEEP because of precancerous cells. It did the trick and I've had normal paps for a couple years! Don't fret! :)

I had one done about 10 years ago and everything came back normal. I feel like a recall hearing there is a relatively high rate of false abnormal results on paps, but I can't remember when or why I think this is the case. All my paps since then have been normal.

Generally speaking it takes many, many years for HPV to turn from an abnormal pap to cancer and that is because it is left untreated. I think I had medium grade HPV (I can't remember the exact terminology) which didn't require a LEEP or freezing, but I had to go for paps every 6 months or so (i.e. watch and wait). My body cleared it on its own (as usually happens). In other words, don't worry because you will be fine. Good luck!

Thanks, bees! I feel much better. I'm generally a healthy person so anything being potentially wrong is strange to me. Not really looking forward to it (who loves the stirrups?), but not as freaked out.

Just wanted to echo what the other women have said. I've had this done twice. One time turned out to be nothing. On the second, abnormal cells were found, so they did a LEEP. Even the LEEP really wasn't a big deal. There were no issues found on the tissue from my LEEP.

The thing to remember about cervical cancer is that it tends to grow/spread very slowly. Generally, if you're getting routine PAPs , you won't have to worry about it developing into actual cancer.

I had LO in January and went for my annual with my gyno last week. Just got the call that I have to have a colposcopy because my pap came back abnormal. My cervix will be cleaned with vinegar and if the tissue doesn't all turn pink, then she'll biopsy anything that's white. Could be cancer, could be new growth. I'm kinda freaked out. I don't go for the procedure for two more weeks.
