No experience with Golden Doodles, but just wanted to say I have a Shiba as well. Over the years (she is now 7), she has gotten even more anti-dog, and she used to go to doggie daycare every week for the first 5 years of her life! Hopefully your Shiba gets along well with other dogs. :) Good luck!

@MissLace: Just saw your update that you put a deposit down! great! I just wanted to chime in and say it will go fine! seriously! We have 2 dogs (they are chocolate lab/blue heeler mixes) and very high energy. But truthfully, since they have each other it helps sooooo much! It's so great having 2 dogs, and we will always have 2 going forward!

No doodle, but we got a puppy when LO was 18 months. The first year was actually fine and even...easy, but once I was pregnant and the 2nd baby came along, it kinda blows balls. Good thing she's kinda cute. Sometimes.

@shellio: that's a good point and we have thought about the cost implications, but luckily the majority of our family members all live close by and they're all dog people so it's never been a problem in the past for them to watch multiple dogs at the same time. Plus with Lo#2 on the way we won't be going away for any weekends or even single nights anytime soon.

We actually found a 4 month old goldendoodle last night that we put a deposit on that we should be able to bring home this weekend!

I don't have a goldendoodle but I'll chime in about having two dogs... we adopted our second before ever having kids, and one thing that never occurred to us was how much more it would cost us. I'm sure you've already thought about doubling your food and vet costs - but going out of town became a huge hassle. If we drive, we can take the dogs, but finding lodging that allows dogs is much more difficult and it sort of interferes with our enjoyment of the trip when we have to worry about the dogs in an unfamiliar place (peeing on things, barking at new sounds, somehow running off and not knowing where they are...). If we kennel the dogs, it adds up so quickly ($35-50 per dog per night in our area), and we haven't had a lot of luck finding people to stay in our house and watch the dogs there but that would cost almost as much anyway. When we had just one dog, we have plenty of friends with dogs who would be willing to keep our one dog for a few days. It feels like much more of a burden to ask them to take on two dogs in addition to their own. We aren't even big travelers but the costs add up quickly for even a handful of weekend trips per year. It sounds like you are pretty set on a second dog but I wanted to give you something else to think about. Good luck!

@MissLace: you are brave! I am a dog lover and we have friends that have both golden- and labro- doodles all very nice dogs. The lab mixes I find to be more high energy than the goldens but every breeder is slightly different.

I would reach out to breeders on the hypoallergenic point, I have not done a ton of research but as they are mixes it is hard for them to predict size as well as shedding. I know people that have been disappointed with the level of shedding, once again I do think there are certain classes (maybe the right term?) of doodle mxes that are hypoallergenic.

And just a plug, my husband is allergic so we must have dogs with hair that do not shed but feel strongly about rescuing (plus I do not have the patience for a puppy). If you reach out to rescues and are willing to wait, doodle mixes do come through. We did that with our current dog and he is a complete love and does not shed (he is a smaller poodle mix). Good luck!

@MissLace: it definitely depends on the individual dog. My goldendoodle has a lot of energy and loves going on walks and hikes but he's not crazy. He is very well behaved at home We make sure he has appropriate toys at home but honestly, he just sleeps a lot during the day. The only behavioral "problem" he has is he is a food thief. :-P Also when he was a puppy he loved eating dirty underwear but he grew out of that.

thanks for all your input! it seems like it totally just depends on the specific dog you get because a lot of the golden doodles i know in real life are actually pretty calm and don't bark or chew much and it seems like here most of them are super crazy!

there are 6 females in the litter we are going to visit this weekend and we would definitely go with the calmest tempered one of the bunch!

We have a doodle, though a labradoodle - she is the devil - high maintenance, extremely high energy, extremely anxious, barks a ton, jumps a ton, nips everyone and eats everything - and this is all after many many training classes. I'm sure health issues are not as common as the behavioral issues, but she also has some new health issue pop up every other month which has cost us a small fortune. Based on our experience, I definitely would suggest either going with a different (calmer) breed or waiting until you have more time to devote and your children are older. Our daughter was a year and a half when we got ours as a puppy and though I love her, I often find myself regretting the decision to get her. We have had her a year and a half and she still drives me crazy on a daily basis and I cannot leave the two of them unsupervised together due to her high energy, she would so easily trample our 2.5 year old without ever meaning to or even realizing what she was doing.

My SIL has one. He's very sweet, but he's high energy, barks all the time, and is pretty mischievous. He does ok around my daughter. He knocks her down by accident and jumps. I think that's just puppy behavior. I personally wouldn't get a puppy while having small children. There just isn't enough time to properly train them. My big dog was sooo high energy until he was 5. I can't imagine having a young him and my toddler. He's 11 now.

We have a doodle. He's actually a black goldendoodle...he's my avatar pic  He's a great dog. He's really calm with our crazy 2.5 year old son, but he doesn't really interact with him. He's patient and lets our son climb around him, but gives lots of warning growls if he doesn't like something. He would rather our son leav him alone most days I think, BUT I feel like he's starting to warm up to him more and see him as more of a person these days. He has always been pretty protective of him (he wouldn't let my parents' dogs near me and my son as a baby), but it's not the cute boy and his dog relationship I dreamed of. FWIW, our son isn't super attached to him either, but I've noticed more of a relationship forming. He was BFFs with the boy I nannied before our son was born and it was the sweetest thing ever. They loved seeing each other every day and I think they were both pretty sad when we moved away. Overall, hes really great with all kids.

I'm sure we could have trained our doodle more than we did, but he does have some behavioral issues. He has pretty bad separation anxiety and freaks out when we leave and come home. He runs around the house crying when we coming home and jumps on me and tries to hold me in one place sometimes when we leave. We say the poodle anxieties mixed poorly with the loyal golden qualities. He's always had the anxiety and at nearly 7 years old I don't think it's going away. He also barks A LOT. It was awful when we lived in an apartment. Every noise was a barking fit. We are in a house on a dead end street and anytime a car drives by or a neighbor comes home he flips out barking. He has a super deep and loud bark, so it is really annoying. We've tried everything short of a shock collar and it hasn't done anything. One nice thing is that he never barks loudly when our son is sleeping. He does really quiet barks, but he seems to know when naptime is and won't bark. We also struggle with him stealing food from the counter and any place he can find food. I had Christmas stocking stuffers hidden in our closet and we came home on Xmas eve to find he had eaten ALL of it and threw it back up. It's really, really annoying because I can't leave anything on the counters when I leave because he will find it at eat it. I think part of it is his stress/anxiety when we leave.

Our dog is super laid back and doesn't really require daily walks. He likes to nap all day and is around 55 pounds. I think we got pretty lucky in the health department because he has never had weight issues and has a good energy level. He's insanely smart. Like way too smart for his own good! He did have some gastrointestinal issues when we first brought him home and it took forever to find a food that wouldn't make him crap his brains out all night long, but he got over that and now can eat anything without getting sick. His coat is a lot of work. He gets dreadlock type knots easily, especially in his legs from laying down and it's hard for me to keep up with brushing with a toddler. We like his fur on the longer side and only shave him 3 times a year (I usually do it myself in the backyard). We keep him long all winter because we live in a frigid area. He does shed, but it's more like clumps of fur left around. Not at all like straight lab fur. Our cat definitely sheds more. My DH says he can't imagine having any other breed in the future. So even though he drives us crazy we couldn't imagine having another dog or breed.

I have a mini doodle (25 lbs) I am obsessed with him. He is super smart and manipulative, loves people, and is incredibly affectionate. He's really sweet with random kids but he isn't sure what to make of DS yet (14 was) but is slowly starting to give him little kisses. The downer is he is very hyper and needs a ton of exercise. He's 6 and hasn't slowed down at all. I got him before I met DH and DH sort of love/hates him because of his energy level. I would get another one in a heartbeat (in the future) but DH says he would not want this breed again. Also, all the full size doodles I've met are terrors. There are a bunch in our neighborhood and they seem really crazy but that's probably due to a lack of training and insufficient exercise. They really need a lot.

Here's a pic

My parents had a Golden Doodle who recently passed away, and will be getting their 2nd one on Sunday. They are the sweetest dogs! Love them so much!! Very easy to train, and great with kids! My son played/harassed :silly: their dog, and their dog would play gently or just deal with my son's antics.

Everyone's experience is different, and I hate when people are all doom and gloom about how challenging parenting is. But holy shit- I have a super well behaved and independent 3.5 year old and the first two-three months of my sons life were an absolute shit show. Like- forgetting to feed the cat, toilet had actual pee on it for days, vacuum didn't get used unless my mom came over- I would like to think that we rocked taking care of the baby and supporting the big kid through the transition and trying to find time to take care of ourselves (by which I mean shower). But my house was a wreck and we were just tapped out. I couldn't take care of anything or anyone else. I wanted to spend every minute I wasn't taking care of the baby playing with my daughter who I missed terribly. If a puppy had been here having accidents I would have lost my damn mind. Also, my well behaved remarkably flexible 3.5 year old did get rough with the cat a few times during the transition (which she'd never done before).

So- I think you are crazy. But, if you do it- more power to you!! (And, it got a lot easier really quickly- baby is five months now and I feel like we have a groove!)

I'll be honest first and say I own a Golden and always will.

My experience with doodles is that they're either awesome, or stupid/crazy hyper and take all the wrong traits of either breed. I just hate how much you pay for one hoping for the best of both breeds and it's really a crapshoot.

We did a crap ton of work with our guy and he is an unreal dog and even with his temperament I wouldn't go near the idea of a puppy again with a kid under 5 in the house.

I do! We have a medium size Golden Doodle. He's 50 pounds of love and sweetness. He's just the best dog. I've had poodles before who I loved with all my heart but my doodle just has the best temperament. He's super sweet, patient, gentle with my DD, cuddly and loving. He's very smart and was easy to train. It took less than 48 hours to train him how to ring a bell to go outside. He doesn't shed and doesn't slobber. Just all around, the best dog ever.

No experience with oodle breeds.

But..I am a dog lover. My parents came to visit with their four month old yellow lab when my youngest was five months. It was nearly impossible. She was just crawling and wanted to practice all the time. The pup wanted to wrestle with her the whole time. He jumped on my middle (17 months at the time) and scratched her pretty badly. It was totally normal puppy behaviour and he's a great dog, but it was very hard to give him the socialization he needed while watching the kids and we had four adults around.
We were together again for Christmas and it was hard again because now he's 80pounds and stronger than he realizes. Knocked the baby over a ton even with close supervision.

I guess I'm suggesting to wait cause it's not fair for the pup to be crated all the time or for the kids to be hurt.

We don't have kids yet but she is very good with them! She is a space invader and gets in their faces but handles it well when they say no and push her away. We have four doodles in our family they are all really good dogs with one or two bad habits that are most likely our faults.

I've met many and have a few friends/family who have golden doodles. They are super sweet, but can be really bat shit hyper and destructive--I mean more so than your garden variety lab/golden type of dog, who I'd expect to have a lot of energy.
That said, in my neighborhood there lives one of the calmest dogs I've ever met, she is from a place called Barleycroft Golden Doodles (I think they're in PA?). The woman breeds specifically for a calm temperament. I remembered their name because I've always been so wowed by this particular girl :)

@edelweiss: i'd prefer to get adopt a slightly older dog from a shelter rather than buying from a breeder, but my husband and i both have minor allergies to certain breeds and its rare that we find a hypoallergenic dog at a shelter. Around us shelters are about 90% pit bulls, 8% chihuahuas, and 2% other random mixes that we'd likely be allergic to.

We would definitely hire a dog walker, and also have her formally trained for obedience/behavioral issues just to be safe. my whole family is full of dogs and we usually go to my parents house every weekend for a few hours so our current dog and play around with their two dogs and get some of the energy out, so i think one more dog would fit in nicely. we're going to check out a litter on saturday so maybe we'll find out pup! : )

how exciting! my coworker has a goldendoodle and she's goofy and awesome. everyone has different priorities and capacities, and if you truly believe you can do it, then go for it. the cautious side of me would ask if you would consider getting an older dog, one that doesn't require as much attention as a puppy. also, i would absolutely hire a dog walker to help out.

also, and i hesitate to say this because every family is different, my friend got a second dog, a puppy, right before she had a baby. a few years later, they put the second dog up for adoption because they were never able to fully incorporate the dog into their lives the way they wanted to and give it the attention it deserved.

we currently have a 2.5 year old male Shiba Inu and we are looking to get a 2nd pup and we're looking at a Golden Doodle.

Call me crazy, but we have a 16 month old daughter and I'm due with LO#2 (a boy!) at the end of April. We have wanted a second dog for a while and it just seems like the most logical time would to get one between now and april so that i can be home for the first 3 months after the babies born to also watch/train the new puppy.

i realize how insane that sounds, but i think its actually doable, especially considering I'm not going to be getting any sleep anyway.

Do any of you have experience with Doodles? I've only heard wonderful things about them and how they're easy to train and great with kids. our current dog is super independent and not really a snuggler, so i think it will be nice to have an affectionate dog as well.

let me know your thoughts and experiences, both with this breed and any tips on dealing with a new puppy on maternity leave! : )
