Hang in there. We treat a lot of jaundice and aside from being sad about the stretch of the parent baby bond, everything works out ok!

Thinking of you guys. My BFF had to get re-admitted with her little man to get his Bili down, he's a happy huge chunker of a 9 month old now. Keep at it mama, you're doing amazing. Just keep nursing her as much as she'll take and you'll be home in no time

Both of my boys had to go under the lights as well. My oldest's levels were 19 around day 4 or 5 and had to be admitted to be put under photo therapy for 24 hours straight. I was lucky they gave me a double room so I had a bed to sleep in and he was just right next to methe whole time. They discharged us when his levels went down to 13.

With my second, they took him at 14 hours and he was under until he was 4 days old. This time since I was still at the hospital they had to take him to the nursery the whole time except to nurse. They brought him back to me every 3 hours to nurse for 30 mins and right back he went.

Both boys were fine after that. I think it's harder for us moms than it is for them. Hang in there!

Sorry you're going through this! DD was severely jaundice as well. Her level was at 24 I believe, we were shocked because she didn't seem that yellow. We used the bili light at home and made sure to feed her every 2 hours. The main thing is nutrition so at that point I began pumping & bottle feeding to ensure that she was eating enough (Her latch wasn't great at the time and I needed to make sure she was eating). Within two day she was perfect. The news is hard to take at first but Your LO will be ok, I remember just breaking down crying. I was thankful we have the technology now for the bili blankets. I was jaundice when I was born and the dr told my dad he had to walk around to indirect lighted areas to help it. My dad said he walked around for hours each day for 2 weeks.

My son had to stay in the hospital an extra 2 nights after we got discharged, which was already a day late. So for a total of 3 days he was in there under the lights :(. He loved it and stopped crying immediately once he went in there. I visioned he was on a beach with us on Hawaii. Helped me. I supplemented formula for 2 days to get more in him. They suggested it bc it sits in his tummy longer allowing for more to come out. When he came off the lights he rebounded and had to stay there another night off the lights to see where his number would go. Big, huge hugs. I was a complete mess. I was thankful for hubby keeping it together.

@PrincessBaby: Would you consider supplementing for a little while? It can be really helpful in getting those bili numbers down quickly... here is another post about a parent struggling with the same situation:

http://www.hellobee.com/2012/01/04/breastfeeding-rocky-beginnings-part-2/

If you're concerned about nipple confusion, there are systems you can use to deliver the formula through breastfeeding. Check out the Medela Supplemental Nursing System here... it's pretty amazing. We got one for free from our hospital!

@mrbee: my milk only came in last night, and so even though it appeared she was getting "enough" with me just having colostrum bc of the daily amounts of poops and pees, this is making me think maybe it wasn't enough. I am basically going to feed her at least every 2 hours, and if she shows any hunger cues at all before 2 hours, I'm just going to Bfeed her on demand to get through this:(. PS: Her SuperMan mask is going to keep me up all night too bc it will not stay in place!

@purkle: @JessLC: Thank you for both chiming in and sharing your experience with really high levels...I'm glad your LOs turned out totally fine. I think that's what has shaken me up so badly- her level was SO SO close to an extreme danger zone!

Thank you for sharing all of your experiences! You have no idea how much it helps! Especially that you all freaked out too...I mean, we are in the Peds unit surrounded by children much sicker than H, and I know that she'll get better and we'll be okay and things could be so much worse- but I'm still so upset and I just want to fastforward to getting her home and get through the awfulness of her tiny little body under these lights:(

First Congrats on your lo! Second, I went thru this too. LO had a level of 21 and she looked like a banana. I cried when she was poked and prodded too for an IV. And she was so miserable under the lights because she was cold and she couldn't see. She cried for 5 hours straight and we could only pick her up Evey 3 hours. Poor thing. Don't worry too much though! The lights can work really quickly. We were out after about half a day under the lights....she startes around 1am and then we were discharged at 3pm and her level was 13. Nurse nurse nurse and bottle feed if necessary!! Pooping and peeing is how she gets rid of the bilirubin. It'll be over soon and she will be just fine. Here is our little monkey under the lights...

My lo was jaundiced and we rented a bili light and kept her on the portable bed at home. I supplemented with formula because getting her to pee was key.
I was super stressed during those early days because of her jaundice and hated all the poking and prodding too! Totally feel your pain and know how it feels :(
She'll get better soon! Has your pedi suggested supplementing?

That happened to us too. LO's # was also at 21 and I cried and cried. I actually took him out from under the lights to feed him and didn't have th heart to put him back. I called my husband bawling and said he had to come back to the hospital! I was a mess. He was better within 24 hours though and we got sent home. It's sooo normal but as a new mom it's still heart breaking! Don't worry, your baby will be in your arms 24/7 before you know it! Hugs to you and stay strong for your baby! :)

Oh honey, big hugs for you guys!

I've been there, and it still makes me tear up to think about it almost a year later. Just remember that this is short term and you will be able to hold her all you want soon!

At a little over 24 hours, his bloodwork came back severely jaundiced, and he got moved to the NICU. The pediatrician had warned us that it would probably happen since he had a huge bruise on his head from birth and he wasn't nursing great yet.

We were allowed to hold him and nurse every 3 hours for 20 minutes. It sucked, but I am thankful that it was that and not something worse in the grand scheme of things. I cried a lot and practically lived in the NICU, but the nurses were the best, my heroes! They let me stay in a nesting room so I had a place to nap in between feedings.

Hang in there, will be sending good vibes your way! Just keep rooting for her to eat and poop a bunch!
