We are holding our son back from entering K in the fall. He makes the cutoff by 3 weeks but his teachers and I agree that he will benefit socially and emotionally from an extra year of preschool. Most of his friends that have summer birthdays are doing the same, as are 3 of the other kids on his preschool class. That made it easier too.

D misses the cutoff so he will be in pre-k at his preschool. I don't have a choice but I'm still torn. He's super advanced academically and has normal social skills but he's far behind on gross motor. He is just starting to write his name and can read pretty proficiently. Basically I think development is fascinating at this age and all the kids will be a-ok :).

I was adamant for the majority of the year I was NOT going to enter my September baby into kindergarten this year. When I sat down with his preK teachers for his kinder conference, they told me he scored the highest on his kinder readiness test (I know he is high academically, but I worried about social skills). They also reassured me that he is more mature than some students who are almost a full year older than him. So, we decided to put him in kinder this year and if it doesn't go over as I hope it will, (I think it will be fine), I'll possibly retain him in kinder again.

He won't turn 5 for about 3-4 weeks after starting kinder.

We aren't this year but I'm waffling about whether we will send her our just do an extra year of preschool (her birthday is 7 weeks after the cutoff). Is yours full day or part-time? I wish ours wasn't five full days.

We just have TK and K, I think. My dd misses the cutoff so she's in TK. I would make the same choice in your situation. If nothing else she'll be with the other younger kids and not being compared to older kids (and therefore tracked differently.) Will she go to K or 1 the following year?

We did last year, and I have to say while not without challenges, the year went a lot smoother than I think it would have if he had been in K last year.

It's a hard decision, not because my son isn't bright, but he really lacked the social and emotional maturity to be an active learner last year.

We are. My son makes the cutoff by 2 weeks, but holding back is the norm in our area for birthdays up to 4-5 months before the cutoff. So much so that the principal told me she literally can't recall the last time they had a September birthday (cutoff is October 1) start on time. It's ridiculous. He's so ready, but ultimately the idea of setting him up to be so much younger than all the other kids right from the start didn't sit well with us. I think he would do fine now, but I worry about the later years when he's 12 and other kids are starting to turn 14, etc. So he will stay at day care and do their full-day Kindergarten next year then go to public Kindergarten the following year. It's such a hard decision to make!

My LO will be in (what we call here) Young 5's or DK. She meets the kindergarten cutoff by 2 days but we thought this would be best for her. She needs a little more social/emotional development. Plus K expects so much of these kids here!

I'm just curious if anyone else is going this route this fall.
