@imbali: Hey - we has our pediatrician appointment yesterday. The doctor asked some questions related to hearing - does she respond to noise, her name, etc. Then she said that she wouldn't worry yet, and LO will get there.

Also, I talked to a friend of mine who's kid was a late talker (like didn't babble at all and started talking before he turned 2) and who eventually got speech therapy and the pediatrician waited until 15 months to put him on the speech therapy list. Although, keep in mind, I'm in Canada and our intervention plans might be different than in the UK.

@Cherrybee: totally! I always get - does she have a fever? what's her weight/growth like? okay, all fine! *eye roll* I'm in East Anglia  wish we were all a bit closer!

@illumina: Ya definitely, you have to be pushy which i'm terrible at, ugh. I wish we could see paeds if we wanted to w/out a referral!

@Cherrybee: well S doesn't roll or crawl yet and still mostly hates being on her tummy, so she's got to be good at something right? I'm sick of people asking if she's crawling yet or do I think she will ever crawl...like I know!

@imbali: I don't think GPs get much paediatric training. It always seems like they are trying to fob me off hoping the problem will go away on its own. I feel like you really have to be pushy to get what you want.

@illumina: @imbali: UK here too and my GP would be like "Is she ill? Then why are you bothering me?"

Illumina, I can't believe S has all those words/sounds! At 9.5 months, E has only just made m and d sounds (it was just b until a couple of weeks ago). I didn't think she was quiet but now I do!!

@imbali: Whereabouts in the UK are you? Im in the Midlands!

Yes, yes, and yes. LO was a super quiet baby. He is 13 months now and he has only started babbling a lot in the last month or two. Around 10 months, he would grunt and say, "ahhhhhh!" a lot but he wasn't making a wide range of sounds. The pediatrician was mildly concerned at 12 month check up. We decided to limit the pacifier and give him a straw cup and reevaluate at the 15 month check up. Now he's finally babbling all the time (I love to hear his sweet voice!) but I fear he may still be a bit behind. He's always been incredibly interactive and communicative though.

You are definitely not alone!

my guy was on the quiet side at that age as well. his babbling became more consistent around the 8-month mark maybe? it could have been later. anyway he makes a of sounds now, still no talking (16 months), but i'm not too concerned about it.

My LO was very quiet at that age as well. It was difficult to even get him to crack a smile. He would intently watch everything. He probably didn't start talking and laughing until he was around 12 months. He is now 25 months and laughs and sings and talks up a storm. Although he may not be as eloquent as some of the LOs I read about on here, he has a ton of words and has no problems communicating.

My LO was fairly quiet at that age. She would make noises occasionally, but didn't really coo or babble to herself. She started saying words at 11 months and hasn't stopped talking since (she just turned 2). Yesterday she decided to list all of her favorite foods to me on the way home from the grocery store, including all of the attributes of rice that she could think of.

@imbali: YES, she is so calm and easy going. I actually cannot imagine that there is an easier child than her. She is so good at playing by herself, doing her own thing, etc. Not much for being contained or for cuddling, but very mild mannered. She's also very studious - she prefers to watch people and figure things out before doing them.

@pinkcupcake: We don't have a paed - in the UK, I can only go to the gp and see if he's worried about it. which sucks! but if i can ever get an appt, I'll ask him.

@illumina: oh that gives me hope! i'm so glad your LO became noisy

@swurlygurl: this is exactly it - just enough to think, oh you *can* talk, that's fine then, but not enough to feel less worried :bummed: I was wondering if maybe it was a temperament thing...does L have quite a chilled vibe?

@Grace: ugh, it's stressful isn't it. will you let me know what your paed says if you feel comfortable? I'm glad he wasn't worried at 6months and hope there isn't anything to worry about now either

My LO is 8 months and isn't babbling much still. She's either quiet or she crows/coos. I'll be talking to her pediatrician at her 9 month appointment. I did mention that there was no consonants at her 6 month appt and the dr wasn't concerned.

L was always a really quiet baby - much like you're describing. She would babble *sometimes*, but not really. Just enough for me to not think there was anything actually wrong (and again, mostly when she was mad at me or wanted to eat). 16 months old, and she is very much the same way! She only has about 5 words right now, and they are all VERY new, within the last month or two. She seems to be picking up a new word about once a week now, so that's fun! She's still pretty quiet, but is trying to figure out words. I just don't think she's going to be much of a talker?!

I hear you though, it is sad to not get to hear her sweet voice!

At 6mths my LO was shouting mamama when she was cross, but that's all. Now at 7.5mths she babbles mama, dada, nana, baba, rara, wawa and says words that sound like turtle, dog and duck. Her language development has really taken off in the last month, so your LO might start improving really soon!

Hmm, have you tried bringing up your concerns to your pediatrician? I know at our six month visit, our dr asked about babbling and cooing. If you are worried,. I think it's definitely worth talking to your ped about.

Wasn't sure what board this belonged on....

R is 6 months so still a littlie but doesn't babble much AT ALL. If she's doing independent play on her mat, I could pretend I didn't have a child, that's how quiet she is. She just plays in silence  The only time she talks is when she's upset really and then she shouts at me. And I guess it makes me worry for talking later (re a delay) but also just makes me sad that I don't hear her little voice :bummed:

Anyone else have a really quiet LO?
