I nursed ds2 primarily in a small am chair with a nursing footstool. It was great.

We had a Poang chair in our bedroom, a glider in hers. I really preferred nursing in the Poang, or on the couch in the living room. I couldn't get LO into position if I was worried about rhe chair moving too. It was really only that she got to big to bounce (at like a year old) did I start gliding on the glider to soothe her.

I love the idea of a big comfy arm chair for a nursery. Synthetic leather so it can be wiped clean!

@MaryM: This seems like it will ultimately be a great setup, as it will be awesome to have one room primarily for sleeping and a separate playroom. Our place is not really well-suited for more than the two of us - the nursery space doesn't even have a door, it's a nook and not a bedroom, so I'm just going to put blackout curtains on a heavy duty curtain rod across the entrance. But I'm hoping we can put off moving for another couple of years.

@SweetiePie: Let us know what you decide, I always find your posts super useful!

@periwinklebee: I'm torn between moving my dresser into the nursery to double as a changing table (it has a flat top) and it being more cramped, or getting a changing table and just using a dresser in one of our guest rooms. There is a closet, so I can do hanging storage too.

Once the baby is in a regular bed, I think they'll move into one of the guest rooms to sleep (we have two currently) and the nursery will be an empty play room.

We have plenty of "rooms" in our house, but the three non-master rooms are all like 10X10 or 12X12 and hardly hold anything other than a bed.

@MaryM: Our nursery doesn't have a closet, so my biggest investment is going to be a decent dresser to store stuff, and I will just put a changing station on top. Then we'll have the crib and an open shelf for toys and books that we already have. The room is about 8' x 8'.

Leaving out the glider would allow a little more space for play things once he's a bit older - rather than having everything take over our living room - so this is really making me think that's the way to go... I guess ideally the nursery might be just for sleep and not for play, but not sure that's really feasible in a tiny condo.

@periwinklebee: Ours is also really small! In our guest room (the same size) we have a queen bed and side table, and there's hardly room to walk around. I'm even on the fence about a changing table.

@MaryM: This thread is making me wonder the same thing. I was planning to get a glider for the nursery, as a comfty place to feed baby, but this thread is making me wonder if I should just spend a few bucks on an exercise ball for the nursery and use a normal non-rocking chair that we already have for feeding. Our nursery is tiny, so fitting a couch or bed in there is not an option.

We had a rocker/swivel/recliner easy chair with LO1 and LO3. It's a great chair (perfectly sized for both me -- 5'2"-- and DH) for feeding, sleeping (if necessary), etc.

For LO2, we were renting a furnished house across the country, so I only had a regular easy chair with an ottoman -- no rocking/gliding/swivel or recline. It was fine! But my kids have never NEEDED motion to sleep, and on the random nights they do, we would just walk with them. I think I just absentmindedly rock in our chair often, but it wasn't something I particularly missed!

Like @DesertDreams88 we have a daybed in the nursery and I love it. I slept in there myself when LOs were very little and nurse in there lying down all the time. I have a glider in my room and I've barely used it. DS1 also slept in it for a while before transitioning to his big boy room when DS2 moved into the nursery

Not the same but we don't have a glider or armchair in there at all, we have a twin bed in there for guests, and it has been the BEST EVER. We read bedtime stories on there, I can nurse there comfortably whenever, and now we are moving him to that bed in preparation for baby #2 using the crib. It's an IKEA bed with two sliding drawers for storage underneath.

I think the most important thing is can you rest your head back a little while feeding. We had a non reclining glider and honestly I spent so much time walking and bouncing DS I think the gliding wasn't needed and I couldn't actually rest in it. We switched to an armchair when he moved to a regular bed and I think I would keep it for future kids that way.

We have a regular Poang chair from Ikea. I only nursed in it before bed and in the middle of the night, but I liked it a lot, although I guess I don't know any different... I never found gliders very comfortable because I don't like to sit that upright.

With my first I had a glider (not in the nursery, we kept it in the living room). It was pretty useful, and the gliding would help him sleep. It broke, and we never replaced it.

For my second, I mostly nursed in a couch in the living room, or in a chair and a half in our bedroom. The chair and a half was the perfect size for nursing. My second did not care for motion as much as my first. When he was really little, like the first month or two, I would bounce him on my knee, similar to the motion from the Happiest Baby on the Block video. We have twin bed in my second one's room that I use for bedtime stories, along with the crib he sleeps in.

We also have an old fashioned rocking chair, but it is pretty narrow, and is a climbing hazard, so we don't use it much.

We have a love seat/chair and a half that pulls out into a twin size sofa bed in our living room, but I nursed both babies on it for a large part of my maternity leaves and it was comfy. The one we have has a highish back so I could still lean back and rest my head/sleep. (The brand is Taylor King and it's called a "twin sleeper" if I'm remembering correctly.) In the nursery, we have the wingback rocker from PBK that has the option for stationery feet when you're finished with the rocker aspect of the chair and I love that too but would be happy with either option.

@SweetiePie: my SIL has a nice arm chair and a pouf and it worked fine. I think early days they mostly put my nephew in one of those super small and cheap FP bouncers and bounced him in it because he preferred that motion anyway. She also kept a small stuffed animal and a small throw pillow on the chair so she could wedge them for her shoulder or back as needed. Her thought was it would be more useful long term as a reading chair and what not. I think as long as you can prop your legs up and not hurt your neck, that's most important.

I had an arm chair with DS1 but it did rock. I added an ottoman but it didn't move. I really liked it. I found it so much more comfortable than the glider that I got 2nd hand for DS2's room. To be honest, we still use the arm chair and DS1 is almost 5. We stopped using the glider in DS2's room. I"m going to try to sell it.

Also, when DS1 was born, we lived in a tiny condo and didn't have anything that rocked or any special chair. I sat on the couch and nursed. I used a yoga ball to bounce him and he liked that a lot more than being rocked.

We had a rocking chair and a reclining loveseat in my son's room. The loveseat was left over from the room being a man cave and I wasn't happy about leaving it in there but my husband wanted to keep it. I actually ended up spending most of my time with baby sitting there, and rarely rocked. The fact that it was stationary was a nonissue. I think if your armchair is comfortable to sit in that will be the key!

ETA: I rarely reclined the loveseat, so mostly just sat in it the way you would an armchair.

My parents have an armchair in the baby's room at their house for when their grandkids are visiting. It really didn't work for the early newborn days with DS1 where he needed motion to sleep... so there was a lot of pacing and standing to rock him back to sleep. DS2 has always been a great sleeper and didn't really need rocking. So I'd say it almost depends on the baby's temperament? I couldn't have gone without a glider for DS1, but would have been fine with an armchair for DS2.

I have a platform rocker that was my grandmother's, but it has wooden arms so I don't think it'd be good for a nursery. And we also have a super comfy recliner. But we don't have something super comfy that rocks. We have so many chairs, I wonder if we really need another?

Adding that I still have a glider in my 3yo room so if we really got desperate we could move that to the new nursery even temporarily. It would be tight but possible.

I loved a glider for my first but I'm considering an armchair or chair and a half that pulls out to a twin size bed instead, since new baby's room is our current guest room. I'd probably have a pouf-style ottoman or something as well so I can still put my feet up.

Not wondering how much you love your glider, more looking for input from anyone who ONLY had an armchair and if it was still comfy and baby was happy. Bonus if you had a glider in one room and now have only an armchair :-) But I know that probably drastically whittles down the sample size.
