An update for anyone interested in how a case of gestational hypertension can play out.
Just shy of 36 weeks (1 week after bp spiked) I was put on disability to prevent additional work stress and I am supposed to be limiting activity.
I had to buy a blood pressure machine and I take my bp 2 times a day. Thankfully that was only about $40 at the drugstore! It makes me feel better to know how I am doing so I won't be surprised by another sudden increase.
Once a week I have a non stress test and amniotic fluid level check, a few days later an appointment, a few days later a phone check in with doc on bp numbers so I am seen or talk to someone every 2/3 days.
Since I stopped working bp did drop a bit although still too high.

@1000tulip: I had PIH and pre-preeclampsia. It started around 35 weeks. I made it to my due date and had a c-section. Dont freak about that part-my section was elective, but with as high as my BP was, they said theyd have preferred to do the section anyhow. It was 175/110 that day, and I was having awful headaches and spotty vision and severe swelling.

I did the urine tests and had severak NSTs, but I made it.

@rachiecakes thanks for the tip about the cold making it worse. I can't even tell if I have a sinus headache or blood pressure headache this morning, but either one is pushing me in the wrong direction.

Me me me. I had PIH and the doctor decided to schedule an induction at 39 weeks. I also had no protein in urine or anything like that. They never did the non-stress tests, though.

Anyway, it turns out my water broke on its own a few days before my scheduled induction. However, my contractions didn't start so I needed pitocin anyway. Ended up with an easy vaginal delivery, thankfully, and a healthy LO. He did have trouble BFing for the first week and a touch of jaundice, but after that it was mostly smooth sailing.

My birth story was one of the first things I posted on the blog if you want to read more. Good luck!

I thought I'd give you my perspective, even though I was not induced, to hopefully give you some comfort about delivering early. I started having trouble with my blood pressure during my first pregnancy around 28 weeks. I was sent to L&D several times for the urine testing/monitoring, and that included a weekend hospitalization at 33 weeks (after which I went on bed rest). Like yours, my doc told me to be prepared to go to the hospital right from my appointments.

I ended up going into preterm labor for unrelated reasons and delivered my daughter at 36 weeks, 3 days. She had low blood sugar and had one episode where she forgot to breathe while she was sucking (like the little oink that she still is) on her bottle, so they kept us just one extra day with her in the NICU and me continuing to be monitored for high BP. I can tell you honestly that the nurses were wonderful about getting me going with breast feeding and pumping. The NICU is scary and certainly is not ideal, but when you make it as far as you have in your pregnancy, any NICU time would be very minimal, if you had it at all. And then once you're at 37 weeks, you're considered term - again, the induction is not ideal, but if your blood pressure is high (and mine was very high in the hospital), it is safest for you to deliver.

I also should mention that the nurses and hospital were great about breast feeding support even after we were discharged! They were so encouraging and helpful, and I learned everything about taking care of new babies during that short stay in the NICU. I ultimately chose not to breastfeed (my daughter was re-hospitalized at 5 days old for completely unrelated reasons that I won't go into here), but I cannot emphasize enough: you will get so much support and help if you happen to have a NICU stay. They do everything possible to minimize the stress for you, and it actually turned out to be a very positive experience for me. My daughter suffered absolutely no ill effects from her early delivery; in fact, she's now 20 months old and dazzling everyone with her conversation skills. Hang in there, mama!

@1000tulip: I got a head cold at 37 weeks and my bp was creeping up but got sky-high when I was sick. They sent me to L&D and that's when I was there overnight. They released me on strict bedrest but I was happy to make it to 40w1d, even though the bedrest was tough.

It makes me feel so much better to see most people have made it to at least 37 weeks. They got me scared yesterday about how I could end up being induced really soon, but now I feel like that was a worst case scenario not worth worrying about.
Huge sigh of relief! So happy to see all the healthy babies after going through this.

Keeping an eye on this thread! My BP has been borderline high the entire pregnancy so I can see this happening to me. Looks like there haven't been too many issues from PPs

yep! that's what happened to me at 37 weeks! my bp was very high, did the 24 hour test, had low platelets and protein but they keep me at rest and induced me at 40w1d. I was send to L&D a couple times, once overnight, but my hospital doesn't like to induce if your bp goes down while at rest. Had a very healthy baby and we're still breastfeeding at 9 months.

I'm being induced tomorrow at 39 weeks for high blood pressure, it started around 33 weeks. I had to check it at home several time a day, did the 24 hour urine test, and made one trip to L&D for it. I made it full term and it has been lower for the most part in the last two weeks, but we decided it is best to have her on the outside so there is no stress.

I was induced because of high BP as well, but my doctor held out until 40 weeks exactly and wouldn't let me go past that day. My BP started to spike at 35 weeks as well. DD wasn't preterm but the induction went smoothly and FAST! I tried my best not to get the epidural but couldn't handle the pitocin contractions by 8cm's. The only thing nice about the induction was that I was able to be prepared for it--I was pretty comfortable too (until the big, nasty contractions hit).

I was induced because of pregnancy induced hyper tension! I, like you, had to get a stress test every single week and had appointments twice a week because my BP was so high. My induction went very smoothly and I delivered a healthy girl. I had no issues with breastfeeding either! It went one hundred times better than I thought....and I was terrified of the pitocin. It wasn't that bad!

@sweetkate I think I am pretty much headed in the direction of getting pulled out of work soon. I was planning my last day to be 39 weeks. Best case right now I think is 38.

The nurse saturday suggested no more work and the doc said give it until next appt on friday morning. I need to talk to my interim boss (boss quit a month ago no wonder I'm stressed!) about only working 40/45 hrs this week even though we are super busy. I think it going to come across bad no matter how I say it but trying to remember that no job/bonus is worth what the stress could do to me right now.

Same thing happened to me. Got sent to l&d, did the 24 hr urine test, nst every appointment after 35 weeks. Luckily I didn't have to be induced, lo came at 37wks 5 days. I know it's easier said than done but try to relax as much as you can. My dr pulled me out of work early because I was too stressed. Are you still working? Can you leave early?

I am almost 35 weeks and my blood pressure just shot up at my last appointment on thursday. I had to the 24 hr urine test friday and spent saturday at L&D for more testing/monitoring. I have no protein in my urine so the diagnosis was gestational hypertension aka pregnancy induced high blood pressure.
The doctor said be prepared to be induced sometime in the next 4 weeks. You will not go beyond 39 weeks and at every doc visit or non stress test (will start next week) you could be send immediately to L&D for an induction or bedrest if bp is too high.
I am shocked, upset, stressed about having a pre-term baby, nicu time, having it mess up breastfeeding.
Has this happened to anyone? How many weeks did you make it? Any advice?
