@JMOM: There are different strategies that work for different people. Honestly, even if she is diagnosed, you wouldn't need to jump right to medication, but a professional will be able to help her figure out different habits and coping skills to help her manage it. (And if she doesn't have ADD, I'm sure it will be a relief to hear that!) Music does help me concentrate, as does (unfortunately) eating - I've finished a lot of term papers with headphones and M&Ms. My ADD tends to be more executive function based, so I keep a lot of lists and visual reminders of things I need to do. Timing my breaks also helps. (Thirty minutes of work, five minutes of fiddling around.)

@KatieBklyn: I think I'll see how school goes this year before I really start looking into it. It could just be a maturity thing. Even if it is ADD, my husband won't want to medicate her. I'm trying to find ways to help her concentrate when she is doing things that she doesn't really want to do - like her summer math or homework. Any things you do that help you focus more - music, movement, etc.?

@KatieBklyn: Do you mind sharing what meds you take and how you got to that point? How did you get diagnosed as an adult? Feel free to wall me!

@JMOM: There are lots of different ways ADD can present. If you're concerned, I would definitely find a professional to evaluate her. I wish someone had recognized and treated my ADD earlier in life - I would have had a much easier time of things, I think. Unfortunately ADD wasn't really a "thing" 30 years ago... Or wasn't at the forefront of people's minds, at any rate. @daniellemybelle: Definitely. I went off of my meds during pregnancy/nursing but I'm planning to get back on them this week. The difference it makes in every area of my life is amazing.

@KatieBklyn: That is exactly how I was (and am) too. Do you still deal with ADD as an adult?

@KatieBklyn: Oops, now I see you did list your symptoms. She is a daydreamer and does get lost in books, too.

@KatieBklyn: I guess I'm interested in your symptoms. My DD is extremely distractable - can't finish most things without prompting. I know most kids are like this, but I've spent enough time in her classroom to see a difference.

My childhood ADD behaviors weren't hyperactive at all. My report card always said that I was a daydreamer, looked out the window instead of paying attention, got lost in books and frequently forgot homework. I was smart (skipped two grades and always tested into G&T) and got decent grades, mostly because I tested really well. But I was super forgetful and a procrastinator and that had a huge impact.

I'm just curious if anyone has ADD/ADHD? I've read that the symptoms for girls can manifest differently than for boys. Sometimes I think my DD may have have one of the above. I've googled about it, but I'd love to hear from someone who has experience.
