@HLK208: I think the only way a portable one would be a good idea is if you are cooling a smallish room that isn't super open...but you also have to have the floor space for it. So I think a living area or any room with high ceilings would be tough to cool. We have ours in our master bedroom and we shut the door to our walk in closet and shut the door to the bathroom area so it's just the sleeping area that is being cooled and it works pretty good for that purpose.

DH just got home with one from Home Depot, yes! Now I just need him to install it before LO goes to sleep tomorrow night...thanks for the help.

@HLK208: you seriously need a window unit, we have a portable one in the living room and it doesn't do much. 90 degrees this weekend is gonna suck big time.

@sandy: we are totally wimps but we are just not set up for this!

@HLK208: you should get it so you can get some relief! It's supposed to be in the 90s this weekend. Everyone says we're such warm weather wimps but they don't realize we don't have a/c! My friend just had her baby and they bought an a/c unit bc she was getting so hot nursing her baby all day and night

@Seattlemom: we have a window unit in LO's room that we got from Costco. I believe it's made by sharp. We've had it for 3 summers and it still works great. It has a setting where you can set the temperature you want the room to be and once the room is at that temperature it will shut off automatically and turn back on when the room gets above that temperature. We got a portable one this year (where just the hose goes out the window) and it's not as efficient and while the a/c will shut off once the temperature is reached the fan itself runs the entire time

@Seattlemom: Best Buy has a portable AC unit (not a window unit) for $100 and it has a timer. I'm also in the Seattle area and I've been thinking about buying a few (I'm super pregnant, and DS and DD have been sleeping with a damp blanket and fans directly on them all week).

@NovBaby1112: @rahlyrah: thanks! DH is at Home Depot now, so we'll see what he can get. I am really hoping for one with a timer so it doesn't have to run all night long, but we'll see. Thanks for your help!

I live in the puget sound area and we install our portable AC every summer for our LOs. It is kind of loud, but our LOs sleep just fine. We also put the timer on so it shuts off after midnight.

@Seattlemom: another Seattle area mama and totally know what you're going through with the long stretch of warm weather. We do have a window unit that we only put up during the summer. She had it last summer and slept fine. And so far so good this summer. But she also uses a sound machine so she's used to noise throughout the night. Honestly, I think it helps bc their room stays cool so are comfy and go to sleep. I think when it's too warm it's much harder for them to settle down to bed

Our entire upstairs is hot! it sucks!

We just use ceiling fans and the kids are fine - their rooms run about 80-81 in the summer time with the a/c on.

I think its fine it you want to use one but no I don't think its necessary

Also - make sure you are using black out shades to keep the afternoon sun out

We have one! Tried to get by without but her room was just too hot. It's not as loud as the 2 fans we were using before and isn't too cold, we keep it between 69-72 according to the thermometer on her video monitor

i do. its not really a window unit, it is a PTAC so it does heat and a/c. it is an absolute monster and makes so much noise (my condo was built in 2007 but these units look like they are from the 70s..so weird.), but LO sleeps thru it just fine. but, she has been sleeping with it since she was 10 weeks and is very used to it.

Anyone have a window A/C unit in their LO's room? My son's (13 months) room is super small, but also one of the hottest in the whole house. Its gets all the afternoon sun and by sunset is often hotter in there then it is outside. We're getting a rash of 80 degree weather here. Maybe even 90 this weekend.

So I'm considering this:
http://www.amazon.com/dp/B003F4W7PE

but worried it might be too loud, or get too cold?
