I helped my friend deal with disability benefits and thought my brain was gong to explode!

Then I found out that all the government workers retire and hire themselves out to civilians as consultants. You can hire any one of them, and they will tell you exactly what will work!

My mom has been dealing with social security for the past several years for my grandmother, and it's one huge cluster-f.

I would start with setting up an appointment for any state services you guys are interested in, or might be interested in in the coming years as different states have different requirements - this is especially important for state Medicare/Medicaid benefits. Some states have complex rules regarding financial assets and benefits, this is especially important if your MIL receives any sort of pension (even one not related to her work - like a military pension from a spouse, etc. Or owns any land/property).

Good luck, it seems to be an uphill battle dealing with social security, and not one I look forward to dealing with!!!

Just looking for some advice on how to start the process of helping Wagon Sr.'s mom retire. I know the steps will probably include 1) filing for social security benefits, 2) filing for SSI, and 3) applying for subsidized federal or state senior housing.

She turns 62 this November, and she's currently working (but has not earned money most of her life) and will quit her job to move closer to us and apply for senior housing here, in a different state than where she's lived and worked until now. She also may continue working part time after starting to receive social security.

Any thoughts? I've been researching online for the past 2 hours and I'm totally lost and confused.
