HFM came to mind. When LO had it, she would be fever free for the morning, but it would come back through out the day.

@twodoghouse: Oh! It could be that. We've not had HFM over here so I hadn't thought of it. My kids were just at a bounce house play area two times the weekend before Thanksgiving (for birthday parties) so I was wondering if she had picked up something there. I will take a closer look at her after she wakes ups.

This age is so difficult because they still can't tell you what is going on but try so hard to do so. And I agree with you - better safe than sorry! C actually ended up in urgent care (8 hours away from our house!) last week the night before Thanksgiving for steroids for a horrendous croupy cough/struggling to breathe. I know we probably could have rode it out just fine but oh my goodness, I don't want to mess around and wish I hadn't.

We dealt with this about a month ago. Alice struggled with eating, sleep, and a bit of a fever for about 4 days. Took her to the ped thinking ear infection but she was fine. The ped thought teething or just a cold (but she didn't have congestion or anything). Two days after the ped visit she busted out with HFM all over her feet. I suspected she actually had the blisters in her throat already since she wasn't eating at all, only nursing, but the dr must not have seen them. I hope it's something relatively harmless like that! I also suspected she had a UTI earlier this summer after a messy poop in a swim diaper situation. We went through a TERRIBLE catheterization experience for Blake to come down with the high fever the day after the appt and the cultures to come back neg. I still think it was better saw than sorry, though, since I don't want to mess around with an untreated UTI at this age!

@MamaBehr: Thanks for sharing that!! I will definitely push for some more testing tomorrow. If she wasn't so miserable and lethargic I'd be less concerned but I've never seen her like this. And she doesn't have ONE cold symptom so I really have a hard time just going along with that dx since it's not what we're actively experiencing.

@coopsmama: my daughter got a nasty UTI last year. Her only symptom was a fever. (She was 4.5 years old and could have told me if it hurt to pee and never did!!). When you go to the ped tomorrow, tell them you think it might be a UTI. And, even if her quick urine sample comes back clean, have them take a blood sample. My daughters UTI came back, and the white blood cells were elevated in her blood even bough the quick urine sample was clean (the prolonged one came back with the UTI, so thank goodness we took her blood!)

Gosh I hope that makes sense!!!

@lamariniere: Thanks for sharing your experience. I keep hoping M will get a cough or something so that it will seem more like a cold. I'm wondering if there is infection somewhere else that they are missing - like a UTI or something. She has no history but I keep thinking there is something more amiss.

DH took her to urgent care and said that they didn't really check anything but her ears so I feel like they didn't get a complete picture for a diagnosis!

I hope she's ok! My DD had similar symptoms a few weeks ago. She had a high fever out of nowhere, was clingy and had labored breathing one night and was coughing loudly the next morning. I took her to the ped that morning and he said it was a chest cold. He told us to give paracetamol twice a day for 2-3 days and gave us cortisone suppositories to help her breathing at night. All the symptoms except the cough were gone within 2 days and the cough cleared up in less than a week.

My DD (16 months) got a fever Friday night. It was 102-103. I thought she was getting the bad croupy cold DS has but it has never progressed into cold symptoms. She has had a fever the last couple of days since - it lowers to about 100 during the day and shoots back up at night.

She is very clingy, only wanting to sleep with mama, hardly eating/drinking, etc. We took her into the urgent care as soon as it opened this morning (I suspected ear infection) but the doctor said she definitely does not have one and said he suspects she has an upper respiratory infection, i.e. a COLD. But she has no other cold symptoms.

Does anyone have any insight? I have an appointment with her ped tomorrow morning first thing but am getting nervous. This is really atypical for her.

Poor thing also tripped and bit into her lip today - blood everywhere. :crying:
